I haven't been able to reproduce this except with one app (Sudoku ME). What apps are you experiencing the crackling with.

I get it, by far, the worst when using HQ, that online trivia app. Whenever the host is talking it crackles like crazy and drives me nuts!

Sky Guide is pretty bad but takes about 30 seconds to kick in. Just open it, start selecting stars/planets/whatnot... and the clipping will start. IMO, it's a secondary sound over a primary sound. In the case of Sky Guide the primary is the background music and the secondary is the star selection. Because of the sound 'fade' effect in SG.. the clipping will continue without anything being selected once it starts.

Is the host talking a secondary sound over a primary (background) sound?

In all honesty, I'm not sure. He's super annoying and that, coupled with the crackling, makes it hard to hear anything else.

I'm mostly concerned about whether the crackling is damaging the speakers. Anyone know if that's a risk from this issue?

From my experience and interactions on this issue that is a risk.
[doublepost=1515124034][/doublepost]I went back to the Plus (8). Not sure if I stated here. Whole point of thread is thoughts after time. I think 8/8+ is best iPhone Apple has ever made. All have/had quirks. The 8/8 Plus is the ultimate sleeper. TID is perfected and blazing fast. Turn on Raise to Wake + Rest Finger to Open and enjoy. Raise with finger on Home Butron and WHAMMMMMO

Does your new iPhone 8 Plus crackle as well?

I am really enjoying my 8 Plus. It’s by far the best iPhone I’ve ever owned. I am also completely happy with the decision to skil the X and stick with the tried and true design of the 8 Plus.

I think the X will be the future, but for now I’ll hang onto that bottom as long as possible.

Are u just gonna deal now or what’s the move?
Deal.

I feel like Apple knows about the issue, including engineers. I don’t know if it’s software or hardware. I’m not stoked about it but I am vested in Apple ecosystem. The Pixel 2 didn’t wow me.

Oh, my god. I downloaded Sudoku ME and the crackling is CONSTANT. I wouldn't even be able to play that game! I'm more of a crossword guy myself but, still, the crackling would keep me out of that game forever.

Yup.

Luckily, in that app you can turn Melody (background audio)all the way down and minimize/stop the issue. Sky Guide users not as lucky.

.. but issue is there.

My phone history is as follows:

3G
4S
5
6
SE
8

The 6 was previously my favorite and was the first phone I thought about keeping for 3 years, but that has definitely been surpassed by my 8. I'm 3 months in with my launch day 8 and it is the best phone I've ever had, hands down. The form factor doesn't feel old to me (coming off the SE, may feel different coming off the 6 but it feels fresh again), and it feels so much more substantial and refined than the 6. Glass back is gorgeous, and the wireless charging is so convenient.

I do however have two gripes -

1) The proximity sensor can be really slow to respond when I pull the phone away from my ear (has done this across all software versions since launch day, could be my edge to edge protector but I really don't think so since it's perfectly aligned).
2) Battery seems to disappear. I'm a pretty light user and it has never been uncommon for me to take it off the charger in the morning at 6:30 and still be north of 85% by 11 PM that night. However with this phone I seem to be consistently in the 50-80% range by that time, and sometimes even lower. Sans screen brightness which I've generally kept on max on all iPhones, I have all my other settings managed for maximum battery life (location services only when using certain apps, minimum notifications, etc.). Yet for some reason the battery just doesn't seem to last as good as it has on other phones. Still good, just not outstanding like prior iPhones. This has also been pretty constant across all software iterations.

My battery is very healthy with a capacity of 1800 out of a max of 1821 mAh, according to that Battery Life app (98.8% capacity). Note however that Coconut battery indicates the design capacity is 1810 instead of 1821, and that my phone's capacity is only 1766 mAh (97.6%). Not sure why there's a discrepancy between those two apps.

So how is your 8/8+ and what are your praises/complaints?
My iPhone X didn't have very good battery life, either. And my 7 plus was incredible until ios 11 and though one of the updates cured the incredibly rapid drain I'd experienced shortly after installing ios 11, the 7 Plus was never again like it originally was. I just replaced it permanently with an 8 Plus which is doing well on its first full day, but won't match any of my other phones on iOS 9. I think it's iOS 11 and not your hardware. The new processor might aslo draw more power, too.

I love my 8+, and if it's the last model with a notch-less screen and touch ID then I'll have it for a very long time.

Touch ID Is not even an indication for any future iPhones at this point, but the notch could physically change likely after the next two generation iPhones. So in theory, you will likely be using your iPhone 8 for at least three more years based on your thoughts in your post, which should see at least four years of iOS support.

Argh, I had spaced that app. Will try that today. Gotta be an iOS issue? Wishful thinking?

What you said is exactly why I went with the 8 Plus! I never had a plus sized iPhone before...only the 5 and 6. I wanted the Plus for the bigger and wider screen and great battery life! I am very pleased with this phone. Battery life is truely amazing...I am consistenly getting at least 5 hours of usage before hitting 50 percent and the phone has never dropped below 35 percent yet! Let the X get better over the next couple years and then I’ll make the jump.

Report - Skyguide AR does not cause any audio issues at all on the 8 I've got. (Question: is that the version of Sky Guide that others have had problems with?) Sudoku Master Edition definitely does. I tried playing a bunch of YT piano concertos, which had been sort of suggested in another thread, and couldn't get any adverse audio effects. FWIW/YMMV/etc.

No problems with my 8+. Love the battery life, the camera, the speed and responsiveness, the screen, the speaker quality, and I have enjoyed the look and feel of a nicely weighted glass-back white phone (mine is the silver version). No regrets or second thoughts in choosing it over the X. I have recommended it to people who ask about it.

Some people say it’s a familiar design, but coming from a space grey 6 Plus with a metal back, different Touch ID feel, poor speaker quality (literally could not have clear calls on speaker phone most times without the phone being close) and a so-so camera, I feel like I do have a redesigned phone. Only the shape and bezels are familiar. But I get it if a person has been changing phones every year and has experienced every incremental change.

I sure do love how you know exactly how I put my iphone away and exactly how I messed up, especially since you weren't there. Your experience is yours. OBTW, I did have an iPhone butt dial many years ago so my experience is that it has happened to other iPhones, and I'm not the only one.
Enough of this, I know what happened, you don't have to believe and I don't have to prove it to you.
Happy New Year.

I’m sorry you’re getting unhelpful responses. Best of luck.

8+ is a nice phone, especially since I got mine as a gift. A lot more smoother performance than my past Android devices too. I haven't noticed a performance drop compared to the X either since the internals are more or less the same.
