Between now and WWDC, I’ll share all DMs I receive from Apple’s legal department.

The next event will be on March 7, 2023 and will feature the Mac Pro 8,1 as well as the new AR/VR Headset.

Apple might trump me and hold it on February 28 but the odds of that are 50/50 since both products are important to them. The one thing that would tip it in favor of February 28 would be the Headset because it may be the more important of the two products for the future.

This information is based on my conclusions after careful research, so since no one from Apple leaked it to me, Apple should not bother sending me any emails about it.

Mac Studio is the new trashcan. Well, it's more like a Mac mini on steroids but arguably they're all distant relatives of the Cube.

The tower Mac Pro is a completely different kettle of fish.

The G4 Cube had a user-upgradable PCI graphics card, a user-upgradable processor, user-upgradable memory, and user-upgradable storage.

It is more like the slotbox Mac Pros than it is like the trashcan or studio.

Its primary similarity to the trashcan is endemic catastrophic cooling failures.

I thought it was already confirmed the new MacPro will use the same case. Why speculating on the case again? Am I missing something?

The case is ugly from the beginning in my opinion, sorry about that. But it's not the defining factor, at least not to me. I want an expandaple Mac. Slots, GPUs, RAM. At least the GPU I think. Not a sealed box like Studio.

Nothing is confirmed of course, but if you believe the leaks then yes the new Apple Silicon will use the same case design. And with that case design it will have lots of big fans and PCIe slots. However, it seems extremely unlikely those PCIe slots will have firmware and OS support for third party GPUs.

No, that is not really correct. The GPU, processor, and storage were never meant to be user upgradable. Only the memory was considered user upgradable. And I say this as someone who upgraded my Cube with a 1.7 GHz G4, 7200 rpm drive, and flashed GeForce 6200.

Steve and Jony clearly built the machine to be different from the tower Power Mac. The Cube is analogous to the Mac Studio and trash can Mac Pro (both of which similarly have some modular parts that aren't designed to be user upgradable), whereas the Power Mac is analogous to the tower Mac Pro (which is specifically designed to be much more user upgradable).

Well, it is not only the leaks. If you look at the Mac mini and MacBook transition that is the trend...
?

The M2 MacBook Air and the Apple Silicon MacBook Pros are completely new designs, as is the Apple Silicon iMac. The Mac Studio is also a completely new product (even if it shares features with the Mac mini).

Mac mini Intel to M1 Mac mini. What is the difference?

I'm still in love with the trashcan.

Wait for WWDC fun. 🫣🤫

Well, actually, I guess Apple outprices me anyway.

I'm not in the market for a new Mac Pro, my 6,1 is humming along just fine for what I need. But I do look forward to Apple showcasing it's tech/design prowess with a new Mac Pro that potentially shocks the world. Unfortunately, with the success of AS and non-upgradeable iMacs, Studios, MacBooks, I have a sneaking suspicion that Apple will double-down on the 6,1/Studio approach and revisit pushing their vision for what a high-end workstation should be. They know the sales numbers, they've held focus groups, they know how many defected to Windows/Linux during the 6,1 reign, and how many/if any came back for 7,1. I wouldn't at all be surprised if they exited the high-end workstation market. But they won't just issue a press release saying "We're outta' here!" They'll reframe the narrative such that a modular/non-upgradeable Mac Pro might not be what all high-end pros need, but it's perfect for 90% of the market. I expect they'll launch a substantially improved Studio branded as a Mac Pro with a huge helping of marketing spin to help quell the vocal minority's painful disappointment.

That will still be studio. Nothing more. Not a MacPro. Plus regardless how the trashcan looks you can still upgrade parts, which is what you would expect from a Mac Pro.

Do we know if the Studio is a success? I have a maxed out one and for me it's a failure. I know a few others that bought it day one and then were hugely disappointed in how apple lied about it's graphics prowess by using misrepresentative benchmarks.

If I was designing the MacPro I would put modular parts inside the old MacPro case in such a manner that I would be able to upgrade proprietary CPU or GPU modules on demand through Apple.

Good point. I honestly don't know. Just "reading the room" it seemed most of the reviews and users' comments were overwhelmingly positive.
