The Retinas are not referred as unibody machines even though they inherited similar chassis design techniques.

Thanks for clarifying!
So I assume this is the wrong thread to follow and not the right WiFi module to get for a Retina 2012?
If so, can anyone kindly point me in the right direction?
TIA

Getting a little ahead of myself here, but assuming Apple releases an Intel MacBook with WiFi 6...is it possible that this will be refreshed if there is enough interest?

Ah the mighty 2012 Unibodies are still so good, glad to have stumbled upon this project as it is my favorite Mac of all time!

802.11ax has been discussed in this thread before, please see here: https://forums.macrumors.com/search/874382/?q=802.11ax&t=post&c[thread]=2171056&o=relevance

Thanks. I do believe we will see at least one intel based Mac with the new standard as many PC’s are starting to ship or offer it as an upgrade. It’s a dirt cheap part for Apple and something that helps ensure these last batch of intel systems stay compatible with their ever growing list of products including of course the iPhone.

Signed up for the waitinglist, looking forward to install and get some better speed.

:) thanks for putting in the work in providing this upgrade path

I'm extremely interested in your mod and was wondering if you'd be ok with people reproducing it? I'm a 2020 ECE grad currently twiddling my thumbs while in quarantine and totally fell down the rabbit-hole with repairing/upgrading/modding macbooks and other apple products.

I can make my own two-sided pcbs at home, 3d print the necessary housings, and use soldering irons and a reflow station to populate the custom adapter board. My main bottle-neck is figuring out what the connectors are and where to get them (the connector/slot for the new airport card and the connector for the old cable).

I'm in love with this project and I totally get you're under no obligation to share your steps, but it would be awesome to get the chance to recreate it.

Aside from that, I'm also interested in modding out a 2009 a1304 Macbook Air a family friend recently gave me (they had no use for it since it's a pretty wimpy machine). Currently I'm looking at possible reflowing 4gb ram in place of the 2gb ram chips (not yet sure if that's possible), but another great addition would be to have an updated airport card in it - - the current one supports bluetooth 2.1 and wifi g :(

I'm having a lot of trouble tracking down those connector names, which is currently my big hurdle. Any help/input would be hugely appreciated! (sorry for the essay post, it's my first time coming out of lurking on this forum haha)

Thank you for at least asking, that was thoughtful :). Since this is my only source of income and for the amount of time I have put into this which started 6 years ago, I really can't share much information. I had to make alot of personal sacrifices to get the tooling and production set up. I hope you understand!

I absolutely do, and I really appreciate the amount of work you've put into this project. I'm on the waitlist on the site and waiting with bated breathe to scoop a couple of these up (went through a whole phase of refurbishing the family's 2 2010's and 2012 MBP's).

As that particular project is (again totally understandably) under wraps, could I ask if you think the Macbook Air mod is at all worth pursuing? Do the old 2009 Airport cards interface the same as more updated versions or are the pinouts totally different?

Thanks again for being as open as you are to talking about this project. It's a huge inspiration and just really damn cool! I can't believe this isn't at the front page of Hackaday.

The Mac mini has a different pinout, so the MBA might as well, plus I'm sure the space constraint to fit it into a MBA might be unworkable as well. :) Thank you for the kind words.

No idea; haven't tried big sur beta. @highvoltage12v should know though.

Not sure what you mean by dongle, but the Wireless AC Airport card that can be purchased by @troop231 should work natively as of DP2 Big Sur, just boot it and you have working WiFi and Bluetooth.

Handoff is currently as working, but Apple can Remove the Board ID's for 2012 Models. If this happens you must find a way to defeat Volume snapshots to boot a live copy with a Patched (IO80211) kext that has the 2012 Board ID added back in. But this is just an assumption that may/not happen in the future. For example in Mojave/Catalina there are board ID's listed for the 2009-2011 iMacs in the AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext and those iMac's are 2 years past being supported, so it may not happen. But in my opinion just booting natively with working WiFi/Bluetooth in Big Sur is worth it.

Been following this thread for a while then forgot about it,

I' glad it all worked out properly I'm on the waiting list and hope to hear the good news ASAP.

Sorry for the delay; things have been crazy getting supplies due to Covid.
Thanks for the update. I will keep an eye out for this and the upcoming iMac with potential upgraded WiFi to see what might be possible in the future for these machines!

Hey, I just wanted to provide an update for everyone with a Mid 2012, or other unibody model, looking to patch to Big Sur.

This card does in fact work natively as @highvoltage12v has stated, and everything just works! No need to mess around with Kexts. Wifi, bluetooth, Handoff, and Airdrop all seem to working seamlessly. Once again, this upgrade has continued pay dividends. And with the exclusion of the older cards in Big Sur, this is definitely worth it if you're looking to use these older machines. I imagine apple made the decision to drop support for any card that lacks ac compatibility.

Once again, big shoutout to @troop231 and everyone involved in making this happen

This is amazing I can't wait for it as today is the end of July subscribed already and can't wait to have it.

troop231,

Sorry it’s taken me so long to install the last two cards I received. I got them installed about 10 days ago and everything is working fine. I also want to let y'all know just how much I'm impressed with the performance of your cards. I have a building that is separated from my main house, I call the man cave. I just setup an Apple Airport Extreme/ac as an extension of the Airport Time Capsule/ac that is in the main house. The other night I checked the speed and the TX rate showed 1300 Mbps!!!! My previous setup was the old Apple TC in the house and the man cave was AAEx and both were
'n' and the best I received was about 200 Mbps. By the time I was ready to post a screen shot it had dropped to JUST
1053 Mbps! Still outta-sight! All four of my UniBody MBP's now have your upgrade and I am 110% satisfied.

Let me know if you ever get the new 'ax' going. I'd like to be on the list for that one.
