I had to wait like 1.5 weeks. That’s what happens when you order on announcement and not after all the hype is built from reviewers.

I just can't decide right now. I know the new Mac mini will be better than my 2019 i9 iMac, or at least matching it with my 1080p video editing projects. I know this because my 2010 Mac Pro 6-core and 2019 i9 iMac 8-core were the same speed producing the videos, so a 9 year difference made no difference in my workflow :( .

I would definitely prefer a headless Mac. I am fine getting my own screens. But I think there will be an updated Mac mini shortly with round 2 of the processor changes.

The fact that you have no idea what you're talking about has everything to do with it. I live right in California just 40 minutes from Apple's HQ and 15 minutes away from 5 different Apple stores and none of them have the base MacBook Air. Don't say Apple flooded anything just because it's available in your area. Good for you.

And the fact that adding 16GB is a BTO option and it has to come from China says everything about COVID. But since you're so hellbent on believing otherwise then prove to me that its not due to COVID. I'd love to see your proof.

May as well ask him for proof god exists. Nobody knows the answer except apple.

The OP didn’t specify (if they did, I missed it), but based on the info provided, I assume it’s a Mac Mini. There are no 16GB Mini configs in store, but there are for the notebooks. Plus the delivery estimates for Minis with 16GB are all out after Christmas.

Also, OP, M1 macs are exempt from the Black Friday deal. You won’t get the gift card if you order an M1 machine.

When someone is making a bold blanket statement that COVID is not the reason for the delay in Apple's production and shipments then they need to back up such statements, otherwise don't say anything at all.

Yup that's how I got mine. you have to check often. only the 16/1tb option pops up outside of the common 8gb units.

I got mine the day after all the reviews came out and in nyc supply dried up very quickly. One day every store had 16/1TB the next only one store.
Agree the demand must be very high as people realize it’s a fantastic machine at a fantastic price.

SMH. It's so bizarre how people don't seem to understand that COVID is the reason for slow product shipments. It hasn't gone away. It's affecting EVERY retailer and corporation who ships goods, especially when production is done in China or oversees. I just checked for a base model MBA. No upgrades. It's 2-3 week wait. Understandable. Just because it's Apple doesn't mean that Apple has special powers beyond COVID. Just be patient and wait it out like everyone else has to.
While COVID definitely plays a role, I think the bigger issue has been keeping up with demand due to an abnormally large interest in Apple products from lockdowns/WFH.

Apple's Mac revenue was up 29% YoY last quarter, setting an all-time record. The supply chain, even without Covid, cannot ramp up 50% (I assume this much would be needed to align supply/demand) that quickly. We saw how slow it was for Apple to ramp up production of AirPods and other devices even pre-covid.

If they guess wrong on supply/demand, it takes months for this to be corrected. This year they over-produced iPhone 12 and underproduced iPhone 12 Pro, and this won't correct until demand dies down in January, most likely. To properly supply for the holiday period, Apple and other manufacturers usually overproduce in July/August/September to accommodate for higher Nov/Dec demand. If they fail to predict this properly, they are screwed until the following year.

My educated guess is that Apple, even with the top supply chain MBA grads in the industry, estimated wrong with certain product segments this year. No one could have predicted this massive surge in demand would still be happening.

For what it is worth, everyone who ordered day one had delivery origin from China. There are no stockpiles in US. There are likely daily shipments from China that get distributed.

This is pretty disappointing to say the least. Did everyone ordering a 16gb version wait that long?
I was planning on ordering on the 27th to take advantage of the Black Friday promo and purchasing applecare with the gift card.

When I go to order, the option for 16 gigabytes changes the status to no store pickups, and delivery december 28-january 2nd.

I have researched this and it seems that at 8gb, working with 8k video takes 5x as long, everything else seems on par. Will I work with 8k? in the future yes, when? Who knows.

Am I really right to be concerned? Should I stick with 8gb? What did you do?
I ordered a 16GB model the day of the launch and was initially quoted 11/24-11/27. It arrived on 11/17.
Also, some Apple stores have 16/1TB models in stock for same- or next-day pickup.

Wow yeah delivery dates for 16GB are slipping into January. I ordered a day or two after the event and got a November 24-27 delivery date but it ended up showing up in the 20th. Glad I ordered when I did!

Did you try 16GB with 1TB drive? That seems to be the only 16GB configuration they are stocking in stores. It's the one I picked up on the 17th

I was going to mention that also. In the metro Boston area, that combination in a space gray case shows up regularly. Not all stores, not all the time, but some stores most of the time.

For MBP and MBA, some stores (if not all) carry 16GB with 1TB SSD as an option. For MBP, it has to be the space gray color. For MBA, space gray and gold color both have 16GB/1TB available to pick up as well. unfortunately for the mini, all customized config has to be purchased online except the two-tier configs apple offers. At least this is the case for the stores around me.

How do I know and how do you check it for the stores near you?

Apple hides the fact in plain sight:

Go to the configuration page, choose the configuration combination you desire, and check the pickup status, if there is ever a blue hyperlink shows "Check another store", then it means this spec you configured is carried by stores. It may say "Currently unavailable at Apple Store XXX", which simply means the chosen store does not have it at the moment, but they will restock that configuration soon. If the configuration you want does not carry by the store, there will be no blue hyperlink and it will simply indicate "Apple Store Pickup is currently unavailable". check the example below.

Apple has been doing this for a long time for various products, and it works like a charm every time I'm checking to see if a certain product configuration would ever be carried in stores.

OP, there was a recent story about how Apple predicted (in an earnings call? Can’t remember) that they would ship only 2-3 million M1 devices for the first couple months and be struggling to meet demand.

So it’s both a combo of a supply issue and a demand issue.

While China supply chain may not be an issue in general, it was expected to be a slight issue here. That plus WFH demand plus them being simply awesome all adds up to delays.

But absolutely Apple has blown away every other tech company in terms of handling releasing a hot product(s). Maybe Oculus only gets close. Nvidia has been an utter trainwreck, AMD CPUs and GPUs, the new consoles, HP Reverb G2, 1-2 others I’m forgetting...it could be much worse.

You do realize "the retail channel" is more than Apple Stores, right? Maybe that's the only place you shop since you're the most centrally located apple user in California, but I'm talking about places like Best Buy (who has lots of models in San Diego), B&H, Adorama, even Amazon. They all ONLY had 8GB configurations of MBA, MBP and Mini.

You, again, missed my point that it wasn't rocket science to make a bunch of 16GB units and send out either. They obviously manufactured an ass-load of 8GB units and a dribble of 16GB. Now, you're right, 16GB is CTO and has to come from China. The fact that they underestimated demand for 16GB has nothing to do with COVID.
