I ordered a 16gb/1tb macbook pro online on the 15th ..was scheduled to deliver on december 3-9th. I kept going online on apple.com with the same configuration in my bag and one day it said available for pickup at my local apple store the next day. So I ordered it again and once it was confirmed I cancelled my previous order. I have been using my shiny new 16gb macbook pro for a little over a week now.

I ordered my MBP 16G/1TB space grey on the Nov 11. I was given a Dec 4 - 11 delivery. On Nov 17, the local store showed this config in stock, so I re-ordered it for pickup from the store and cancelled the previous order and picked it up on Nov 18.

Has anybody seen 16GB/1TB M1 Mac Minis at stores for pickup? I ordered one, but delivery is scheduled for Dec 30th so would be nice to find it locally a bit earlier than that.

Looking at Apple.com it does not seem the 16gb/1TB is available for store pickup. I thought I saw earlier this week.

AFAIK, Apple did not do an "Ultimate" Mac mini M1 configuration with this release while they did it with the MBA/MBP 16gb/1TB models

My 16gb mini originally got a ship date of 2 Dec, but I have since received two emails changing the date to 16 Dec, then 27 Dec.

This is pretty disappointing to say the least. Did everyone ordering a 16gb version wait that long?
I was planning on ordering on the 27th to take advantage of the Black Friday promo and purchasing applecare with the gift card.

When I go to order, the option for 16 gigabytes changes the status to no store pickups, and delivery december 28-january 2nd.

I have researched this and it seems that at 8gb, working with 8k video takes 5x as long, everything else seems on par. Will I work with 8k? in the future yes, when? Who knows.

Am I really right to be concerned? Should I stick with 8gb? What did you do?
5+ weeks, not in my case. I ordered a M1 MBP 512/16GB configuration on November 12th and was given a delivery date of December 3rd through December 11th. It shipped on November 22nd from Shanghai, China and arrived November 25th (I'm in Ohio).

Anyone ordered theirs from b&h?
I pre-ordered a gray mba 16gb/1tb/8core from them on 11/29 and it’s still in backordered status

Much as I like B&H, I wouldn't order a brand new computer model from them due to their return policy.

That’s interesting, I just noticed their policy does not allow the return of “unsealed” computers, ie there’s not a return policy for this mba at all? Thanks for pointing that out, i ordered from them because of the $150 discount they had on these, but the delay along with this policy is making me rethink this...

Bingo. With B&H, once you open the computer it's yours. Can't return unless defective.

That's fine for a proven model you know is the best fit to your needs. Not sure that applies in this instance.

None of the above should be considered a negative against B&H - I've bought new & used photo equipment from them for a couple decades and have always had a great experience.

FYI - for ordering from Apple, look at ordering from their EDU store if applicable. $100 off the systems, plus a slight discount on the upgrades and AppleCare+.

Also depending on your desired config, watch for Apple store stock - I ended up buying my MBP that way and cancelled my online order. Limited to base models, though the 16/1T configs do show up.

The fact that Apple flooded the retail channel with 8GB models and no 16GB models has nothing to do with COVID. There are actually plenty of 8GB models of MBA and Mini M1 in retail stores in my area I can go walk in and get TODAY. But there are ZERO 16GB models. Never were any 16GB models from Day 1.

No 8GB should even exist. 16GB should have been the base.

I love my mac, but I will not be an apologist.

They took a guess as to what machine and price people people would want, the made a LOT of those, and now people want the one they have to build from scratch.

I can understand when I bought my iMac in september.
That machine had FOUR things that could be changed (HDD, RAM, CPU, GPU) however this literally has TWO.

They knew exactly what they were doing, don't underestimate Apple's control of their supply chain and inventory. Whats the big deal anyway, you have an existing computer, and 5 weeks isn't very long. Mine isn't coming until December 23rd, woopty do who cares. It's just a computer.

Were you saying the same for the two-port Intel MBP/MBA models that the M1's replaced?

Reality is that 8GB is sufficient for many (if not a majority) of folks needs -- and Apple would be throwing away money providing higher base configs to those users. Plus they get to enhance revenue with the upgrade cost for those who feel they need the higher level config.

When the four-port MBP models transition I anticipate we'll see those come with 16GB base just as the current four-port Intel models provide -- since they target a different segment.

YES

The 16" should not have been unique.
It wasn't/isn't.

Four-port MBPs come with 16GB base memory

Two-port MBPs come with 8GB base memory.

That's how it was before the M1's dropped and that's how it is now that the two-port models are M1.

This.
There is no way that anyone cannot justify the $200 is not well-spent on the 16GB model. For today's software, sure, but almost certainly going to extend the lifespan of this laptop.

The only logical explanation is that Apple had problems in manufacturing. I do not buy that Apple 'did not understand the market', they knew exactly where the demand would be and the 16GB is the no-brainer config for the MacBook Pro.

I disagree with your Apple apologetics in this case. This is not merely a routine incremental rollover of their low-end model. With the step change in performance the new chips offer, Apple should have foreseen that many early adopters would be enthusiasts who are into things like video editing, etc. and who would desire the higher-spec 16/1tb configuration. It is beyond frustrating that these are so scarce in the retail channel right now.

A friend of mine works at an Apple Store. If there are less than 3 in inventory the online inventory will not show it.
Just he has that his store had a 16GB 1TB gold air but when looking online it did not show that his store had any available to pick up.

I just ordered a laptop from them and canceled after it was reported in stock but went several days without shipping.

I think the issue with CDW is they will allocate you a machine for drop shipping and then if that gets gummed up they won't allocate a machine from their own inventory. We have had this issue before with CDW for non-Apple products.
