BB is one of the best stores in the country lately. They were being destroyed by Amazon and did a lot to fix it.

Currently I spend enough to be eligible for 45 day returns of most products (excluding computers and mobile phones) and they always have what I want or get it to me as fast as Amazon.

They will protect their prices against sales (be it their own or a competitor) and I get pickup within an hour.

Plus they always have what I need in stock.

This is a great video to explain it
Wow. I remember going into BB when I was child. Then they went down the pooper. Interesting to see them return with vengeance.

It's interesting you cannot find ANY M1 Mac in the 16Gb variant, ANYWHERE. I've tried Best Buy. Nope. I've tried Apple. Nope... if even Apple doesn't have their own M1 Macs in a 16Gb variant, then either it's a sales plot to eek as much money out of people on the 8Gb models or... it must be VERY difficult to make 16Gb variant M1 chips... dunno.

BB will never have the 16fb variant, I know a manager there who explained they do not carry the higher end apple products and as this is really the only thing that makes it different than the 8gb, it won't be stocked there.

I had a 5+ week wait time when I ordered a 16GB mini last week. I don't need the machine urgently so I'm waiting (im)patiently. I will need the 16GB to test workloads like Premiere, so no other option for me.

Yes, completely understand the theory you put fourth.

There are actually THREE apple stores within a 7 mile radius of me.
I have been there, done that.

Each time I go to the site, I can clearly see that the MBA and the 8gb/256 MBP are available near me.
I could even get those at a Best Buy (and I would PREFER to get the machine at a BB due to their rewards program) however there is no option for stores.

In fact, there is no blue hyperlink for the 16gb version of anything. Any color.

For me (personally) it just says "unavailable for pickup" (or some sort of variation).

I have thought long and hard about using the 8gb variant. I have watched youtube videos that show that for video production (so long as it is FCPX which I do not use, I am an adobe user) it is literally 15-30 seconds faster in the 16gb version, however I also would prefer to have the machine for around 2 years before upgrading, and I'd rather not have buyers remorse next Christmas season on an 8gb as the 8k video workflow is literally 5x faster on a 16gb version.

It's strange to me, how one user (you) has such a different website experience than myself, and again there are THREE apple stores within just a few miles form me.
You're saying you tried 16gb with 1TB storage and it said "unavailable for pickup" at all the stores near you? I find that odd, but have no reason to doubt you. Definitely stinks that you appear to live in an area where a SKU that most apple stores stock isn't being stocked. I guess you better just order one because otherwise you'll keep being pushed back.

If you order onine at Apple you get total different delivery dates than what the APple support is telling you on the phone. I can order MBP/MBA both 16GB and it will come latest till 4th December here. On the website I should wait 3-4 weeks

The 16 Gbyte M1 has quite a few more transistors. With new chips, it takes a while for yields to go up. So they likely have less 16 GByte Chips available right now. Many of the 8Gbyte versions likely started out as 16 GByte but had failures in one half of the RAM. As yields improve, 16Gbyte will be easier to come by. Hallways happens with new CPUs where initial runs have lower specs until they tweak the process.

The M1 SoC and the RAM are not built on the same silicon die. The RAM is manufactured separately and placed on the same chip carrier as the M1. So yields are unlikely to be the bottleneck. On the other hand, the higher density RAM needed for 16GB may be in short supply.

Just outside of Boston, I can find multiple stores selling the 16GB/1TB MacBook Pro and Air in Space Gray. It’s odd that it is different in different locations. For example, someone posted that they can find the Silver 16GB/1TB in a nearby store yet as far as I can tell, no Silver MBP or MBA has ever been available in 16GB in my area.

Just to update, the machines now go to January 7th. I know I should pull that trigger tomorrow, but that is f***ing RE-DICULOUSLY long to wait.

Again, they must be facing some sort of component shortage when it comes to the RAM, because anything with 16gb on my end goes to December 30th, a larger SSD then goes to January 7th.

Is this the largest company on earth or something?

And do the research, the labor in china is actually back to full force, actually producing MORE than before covid.
If you don't need it don't order it, if you do need it you should have ordered it when you made this thread, I am sure you would had one in one-two weeks time.

I am sure Apple is conservative about the shipping as it is sent from China, as suddenly something happens that delays it. But so far not just for me, but everyone else have received it much quicker than stated (it took one week, but said four).

For RAM and M1 availability, I think Apple have what they need, but remember that TSMC that produces those also are busy fulfilling orders for AMD, Sony (PS5), Microsoft (Xbox), etc. Not the smallest companies, and try to order one of those...

Apple changed my delivery time from Dec 14-22 to 22-29 so I canceled my order. Picking up a 8gb variant today at Best Buy.

Feeling great about this choice especially with a redesign coming next year. I’ll keep this base model until the new chassis design comes out.

More should do the same if you can find a 8gb variant locally

I wonder if Apple have possibly underestimated the popularity of these machines. After the reviews it was also going to be constrained, but these are looooong wait times for a Mac laptop. Wait until the 16 comes out! Wow, better get your order in as soon as you can.

I ordered a Base Air with 1TB HD and the wait on that is 3 to 4 weeks!
I've almost forgotten I ordered it!

Apple is getting 5nm wafers, everything else you mentioned are 7nm. Not sure what SK Hynix are using for their LPDDR4X.

I've seen them in Southern NH as well: Salem, Manchester and Nashua.

I would like one or two but I don't need any of them as I recently built a big rig. I'd like an Air for the battery life for casual use and a Mini or two to play around with the architecture and maybe use for work.

PC building parts have been in short supply most of 2020: video cards, RAM, SSDs, CPUs, motherboards. Everyone is in WFH and SFH mode and pepple have been building new, buying new or upgrading. These M1 systems are notable for being able to do Zoom without getting hot.

Well, today I broke down and picked up a 512/8 from best buy. I figure the return policy through mid January will give me plenty of time to see if the 8gb is as good as everyone states.

To be certain, I am sure that next cycle I will get a new machine, possibly sell this or hand it off to my Godson in the philippines who will be due for an upgrade to his Asus notebook by then.

A LOT of this decision was based on THIS video here, and this channel. They are doing some great work comparing real world not just benchmark scenarios, and since I do not plan to do 8k video for the next year, I really and splitting hairs when it comes to what I get, I guess.

Those are the "Ultimate Editions" (not a real name, it's a forum codeword here) that's been available in Apple Stores for the longest time. The trick to finding it is playing with the configurator with the upgrades until you see one that's available locally. For the MBA/MBP this year it's the 16gb/1TB models. Problem is most here don't need 1TB. Another issue is that Apple didn't seem to make a Mac mini Ultimate with this release.

I spammed the Apple Store app a couple of times a day, LOL.

Original M1 MBP13 16/1TB ordered Nov 19 for estimated delivery Dec 7-14

Spammed Apple Store for 4 days

On Nov 23, found availability for pick-up in 4 stores in the DMV region for Nov 25. Quickly cancelled previous order then secured a new order for pick-up on the 25th.

Rechecked stock 15min later and all locations were unavailable - guessing lot of locals were in on the trick and doing the same LOL.

Happy to report I picked up a MBA 16GB/8-core GPU/1TB from Apple Store today - Alderwood Mall in WA state.

I was looking yesterday night and found them available in two stores, so picked one!

I have only seen the MacBook Air with this configuration in the stores.

And yes, I don't need 1 TB.

This was my experience. The only locally available configs for the M1 MBA w/ upgraded chip were 1TB+16GB, so you either have to eat the $200 for extra disk, or get trapped in what other people are reporting is shipping limbo leading up to Christmas. I cancelled my online order when I found this config this morning, and I'll be picking up the unit tomorrow.

NYC area seems to have gotten a ton of the 16GB/1TB MBPs since yesterday, nearly every store has them in stock now. Picked one up yesterday.

Maybe they'll spread the love to New England.

I'd really prefer 16/256 though as this will probably be a throwaway system.

This is pretty disappointing to say the least. Did everyone ordering a 16gb version wait that long?
I was planning on ordering on the 27th to take advantage of the Black Friday promo and purchasing applecare with the gift card.

When I go to order, the option for 16 gigabytes changes the status to no store pickups, and delivery december 28-january 2nd.

I have researched this and it seems that at 8gb, working with 8k video takes 5x as long, everything else seems on par. Will I work with 8k? in the future yes, when? Who knows.

Am I really right to be concerned? Should I stick with 8gb? What did you do?
suppose depends on the region here in UK John Lewis I can see most are available and are in stock online.
