I see the iPad as a revolutionary device, not because of the hardware features but for what the software will allow you to do with this device. Apple has overcome the biggest hurdle that has plagued all tablets before now, the user interface. Go back and look at the iWork demo in the keynote and you will notice that many of the functions were in-fact easier to do on the tablet than on the desktop.
The mistake I think most are making is the focus on the hardware features it has or doesn't have, but the real "magic" will be in the creative software applications that are yet to be produced. Imagine this:
Home use:
- iPad can easily become the central controller in your home that controls your media server (music, videos, movies), home automation (lights, heat/air, appliances), home security system and allows you to access security cameras.
- Do it yourselfer's companion - display instructions or video for laying tile, woodworking, electrical work, etc.
Out and about:
- Portable reader, video player, and web browser that can be easily taken and used almost anywhere (any room in the house, garage, workshop, outside in the yard, car, plane, train, waiting room, etc.).
Business use:
- Great presentation tool. No more flip charts, three ring binders for sales presentations - replaced with interactive keynote presentations with embedded video, 3d graphics, you name it. Doctors/nurses can display patient history records, access medical data, display x-ray, MRI images...
- eForms and documents - can be used by anyone who needs to have people review paperwork. Hopefully there will be some sort of inking in the future to allow for signing documents on screen - paperwork now all electronic.
- Training tool. Present training videos, tests, quizzes, interact with 3d models, video walk-throughs...
School uses:
- Interactive textbooks with audio, video, ability to manipulate 3d images.
- Video taped lectures on demand for student review immediate following each class.
- Class software that allows student teacher interaction - submit questions, ad hoc quizzes, polling, etc.
Though it is true that some of these are already being done on platforms now, even the iPhone. None have the combination of the iPad's screen size and most importantly the intuitive multi-touch integrated throughout the OS and all applications that allows the focus to be on the content rather than on how to use the device.
I am going to really enjoy this device!!!
