It is much more than a netbook, at almost the same price.

Exactly. The iPad is going to drastically change the netbook market. Last Spring I bought an Asus netbook. I returned it after a week because of the small screen, small keyboard, slow processor and it wouldn't play any video of any kind. iTunes was terrible on it. Now we have the iPad which will work great with iTunes and will play all kinds of video.

Amen to that! That's how I felt about it, when i saw the price structure I looked immediately right, then down. :) I can't not have the best.

I'm with you guys. I cannot not get the largest with 3G! I figure I'll take this will me every where and I'll want to carry as much as I can plus have the ability to connect. I'm really excited. The only problem is I can't wait until April! WTF?!? I hate that they announce it so early and then I have to wait an extra month for 3G! It's gonna kill me!

I'm more than happy. I'm truly excited. I don't jump on every new product or generation (never got an iphone), but when Jobs announced the ipad I realized it was the product that I never knew I always wanted. Definitely 3G for me (have no 3G devices yet - see: no iphone) and am just debating over the size, but will probably max out at 64.

(I posted the following on a different thread, but I think it's worth repeating for doubters and others to see how it can fit perfectly into someone's life.)

I work internationally a lot. For the remainder of the year I will take a minimum of six - 14 hour flights to Asia (3 trips - 2 months stays per trip. I will take my powerbook to leave at the hotel(for heavier computing) and will carry the lighter ipad daily to pull out whenever I need to take notes (almost daily) or show a video or photos (regularly) to colleagues. The ipad will be far more useful at these tasks than my ipod touch (having 8 people gather around squinting to watch a video doesn't work.) I do not have an iphone, since I spend half the year, at least abroad, carrying AT&T for 3G has never made sense when I would use it so little. Now, when I go on vacation with my family I can buy it just for the month. I will get the 3G model just for the 1 to 2 months a year I will get the monthly plan. For vacations with my family it will be the only device I will need to bring, not the heavier Macbook Pro.
I can also leave it as a digital picture frame when not in use. Will also play/use a couple of the apps that I currently have on my ipod. Ical will certainly be a more pleasant experience. I've read about a dozen books on my ipod touch so far. I find it manageable, but will be much better on the larger screen. it will also be a great portable DVD player/book reader/game player for my 7 year-old daughter when trapped somewhere (car, in a line, shopping, etc.)

Version 1.0 will be a benefit to me starting right away for the things it can do and do very well. (will be great for those long plane rides.).

Sure, it would be nice if it had some of the oft-complained about missing elements, but the truth is none of them will affect me very much.
Flash - Can't watch Hulu internationally anyway, don't play online games, won't miss ads. Would be nice to watch some web video on the go I suppose, but would do it so rarely it won't kill me to wait until I can get back to the hotel. If I want to watch something while on the go, I would go for my slingbox, which I currently use on my ipod touch. This again will be better with a larger screen.
Camera - Only use it for ichat/skype video calls with family. Important, but will have my powerbook abroad for bigger tasks anyway.
Multitaksing - for purposes I will use it for, multitasking 3rd party apps is not really applicable.
No ports for USB, SD, HDMI - Again, I just don't find these applicable for me. I have no problem syncing it occasionally with my computer.
Limited hard drive space - I've watched as many as 5 movies on my ipod touch during an international flight(with external battery assist) Why would I ever need to have more full length movies on the ipad than that at one time.
File Management - I will use ipad I works version for reading/editing docs on the go. I'm sure there will be an easy way to sync it to the powerbook.

Bottom line: It's not the full computer some people want it to be. But the things that it does do well will be very useful for me. I could wait for 2.0, but I want to start getting the benefit from it right away. If you get 2.0 will you sorry you ddin't wait for 3.0? No, I will get mine right away and perhaps another in 2 or 3 years, and it will be even better. (I still very much enjoy my first generation ipod touch and don't see a burning desire to replace it yet as it still works, except for the added screen real estate on the ipad touch. People may think they're bashing it when they call it a giant ipod touch on steroids, but for some of us, that is exactly what we want.

Yeah, I'm a happy bunny.

I also wonder if I'm the only one to think Apple may be developing a camera add-on to plug into the dock connector instead of an on board one. Keeps the price down for those who don't want it because you don't have to spring for it if you don't want to, and keeps those happy who wanted one. There's a lot in the sdk afterall. Granted, it's not as neat as it could be if it were on board, but the original iSight wasn't on board either (I still use mine with my mac mini).

Thoughts (as long as they're happy, lol) ?

An external Apple camera for the iPad? Never in a million years.

I'm not happy because waiting for the iPad is agonizing ;) Seriously, my productivity has dropped dramatically as I scour the internet daily for any news.

I am torn between pre-ordering and going to a store to buy it. If I pre-order, then I'l get some short-term satisfaction in having taken a step closer towards getting it. But then on delivery day I'll be pacing like a mad man for it. If I go to a store, I will miss the short-term satisfaction, and odds are I'll have it sooner.

Decisions, decisions...

It would defeat the whole reason for the simplicity of the iPad experience

I do tend to agree. It seems a clunkyish add on, but then again so is the camera connection kit imo, versus an sd card slot built in. Whatever the outcome of the sdk camera stuff, it's intriguing.

Still happy. ;)

I'm am still very happy about the iPad! But the more I think about it the iPad needs user accounts. The iPad docked on the kitchen counter or laying on the coffee table is going to get picked up by me and my wife. Do I want her email accounts and my accounts both on the iPad, No. Do I want to have to login and out of the facebook app everytime I grap the iPad, No.

If the iPad is intended as a casual computing machine it really needs users accounts.

When I preordered the 3GS it was delivered to me a full hour before the local Apple Store opened. I was activated and synced before the doors opened.

Really? Well, that changes everything. I hope the rumor about opening up pre-ordering tomorrow is true. Thanks Roy!

I see the iPad as a revolutionary device, not because of the hardware features but for what the software will allow you to do with this device. Apple has overcome the biggest hurdle that has plagued all tablets before now, the user interface. Go back and look at the iWork demo in the keynote and you will notice that many of the functions were in-fact easier to do on the tablet than on the desktop.

The mistake I think most are making is the focus on the hardware features it has or doesn't have, but the real "magic" will be in the creative software applications that are yet to be produced. Imagine this:

Home use:
- iPad can easily become the central controller in your home that controls your media server (music, videos, movies), home automation (lights, heat/air, appliances), home security system and allows you to access security cameras.
- Do it yourselfer's companion - display instructions or video for laying tile, woodworking, electrical work, etc.

Out and about:
- Portable reader, video player, and web browser that can be easily taken and used almost anywhere (any room in the house, garage, workshop, outside in the yard, car, plane, train, waiting room, etc.).

Business use:
- Great presentation tool. No more flip charts, three ring binders for sales presentations - replaced with interactive keynote presentations with embedded video, 3d graphics, you name it. Doctors/nurses can display patient history records, access medical data, display x-ray, MRI images...
- eForms and documents - can be used by anyone who needs to have people review paperwork. Hopefully there will be some sort of inking in the future to allow for signing documents on screen - paperwork now all electronic.
- Training tool. Present training videos, tests, quizzes, interact with 3d models, video walk-throughs...

School uses:
- Interactive textbooks with audio, video, ability to manipulate 3d images.
- Video taped lectures on demand for student review immediate following each class.
- Class software that allows student teacher interaction - submit questions, ad hoc quizzes, polling, etc.

Though it is true that some of these are already being done on platforms now, even the iPhone. None have the combination of the iPad's screen size and most importantly the intuitive multi-touch integrated throughout the OS and all applications that allows the focus to be on the content rather than on how to use the device.

I am going to really enjoy this device!!!

To all the naysayers about lack of Flash, camera.

Who needs it?

Already there are iPhone/iTouch optimized sites or apps available. I read an article where they had screenshots of disabled sites on iPhone OS, such as CNN. Well, they fail to mention many of those sites have iPhone versions.
Now sounds like Hulu will be available, with a fee.
Now all that is left is Flash games, if you can't live a day without playing Farmville then get a life!

I too am looking forward to the iPad. It fits what I need. Traveling, downloading photo's from full memory cards when traveling, watching movies...etc.

To those who are going to wait for Ver 2.0. Well, why wait when you can enjoy and play with one now? The original iPhone got updated with iPhone 3G, then 3GS...there will always be updates. Life is short.

I am excited for the iPad. It will fit my needs very well. It will be great for vacations as well as in the living room. I am very excited for all of the touch screen goodness too.

Best positive ipad quote evar!!!!!

I havent really thought about it, but I'm curious how I can tie the ipad to everything in a home. I have cat6, 2 coaxial cables outputs in every room, in ceiling speakers/intercoms every room/bathrooms. Radiant floor heating, security cameras. I'm sure there's a way, like I said haven't put thought in it.

Man I'm puzzled. Ohhhh only way I guess if your synched wirelessly to a central computer, that everything is tied in with/media server? I wouldn't say completely easy. It'll take some time putting it together as we haven't centralized everything together yet. Haven't even tapped it yet. With iPad on the horizon, gives it that extra kick in the ass.

i want it soooo badly im going for the 64gb 3g lol 30 a month is no big for me and i live in an area where there really is no wifi but i can get att service :D yay

(Still) happy.

Still planning on making a 64GB + 3G my primary computer on Day 1.

Now considering also ordering two 16GB wifi models for the kids. (Oh who am I kidding, they're for me to play with until the 3G arrives...)
