For a first-gen product, I'm pleased with it. My only gripe is the lack of a camera, but since I always have my iPhone with me and can easily email it to the tablet, that's not a huge issue.

Tethering would also be nice, but because they're making a 3G version I doubt we'll ever see Apple allowing iPhone tethering to the iPad via bluetooth. It would be nice though.

But other than that, I think it looks great. Upscaled apps look nice, original apps are on the way..

When I saw the bezel on this thing, I was actually pleased. Everytime I saw a mockup with the screen covering the entire surface, I thought "That's not practical". This thing can't be palmed like an iPhone. You need to grab the sides. So the bezel I'm fine with.

Agreed. I would find it odd, actually, if this thing had a camera on the back. How dumb would you look trying to take a picture with this thing?! A front facing camera I understand, and wish it had. Also agree with you about the bezel. You need to easily grab onto it without touching the screen. I think it's a great start.

I'm going to get one, as soon as it will be avaiable, most probably the 32 Gb without 3G.
It's a perfect replacement for my iPod touch

I gotta admit I was a bit surprised by the complete and total hatred for the iPad on these forums. Maybe that's because this site has been overrun by Windoze fanbois who have nothing better to do than hate on all things Apple. Or maybe it's overrun by nerds who have never been laid and have nothing better to do than hate on basically everything.

So, just for kicks I went back to early 2007 in the iPhone forum. Yep, hatred all over the place.

So I must conclude that some people just love to whine, and they target anything popular. But it's especially delicious to read about people predicting doom and gloom for Apple, or one of Apple's products (like the iPhone), when said product has gone on to massive success and profit.

Here's my take on why the iPad will succeed.

First, and this is probably the most important thing that the nerds need to read: just like the iPhone, Apple is not attempting to make the iPad a device that will satisfy every single techno wet-dream of every nerd in the world. Companies never profit by doing that. They end up with overpriced devices with poor sales and the nerds will still whine about it all over the internet. It's a no-win situation and Apple and Steve Jobs are way too savvy for that.

Second, it will rob sales from netbooks, laptops and ebook readers. It does many things from each of those categories much better.

Third, most people are NOT tech-savvy. Something you can operate using just your fingertip and one button, that they can handle. Like Steve said, if you can use an iPod or an iPhone, you can use the iPad.

I could go on, but I'm not sure it would make any difference. The masses will buy in, and they could care less that nerds are whining away about the lack of built-in camera (vs. plug-in), stylus (use your finger, duh) or that it won't run MS Office 10 beta in XP mode. They also don't care that it's not (yet) on Verizon.

So yeah, me? I'm happy.

^ Thank YOU!! I was very excited but when I saw all these comment, I got pissed. But I wasn't here when the iphone came out so I didn't know that there was hatred when the iphone came out.

AMEN friend. I'd buy you a drink anytime!

oh and I plan on buying the iPad. I can hardly wait.

...have my iPhone with me and can easily email it to the tablet, that's not a huge issue.

You don't even have to do that. There are plenty of bluetooth and/or wi-fi transfer apps out there.

I, too, am happy with the tablet. It is pretty much exactly what I expected. I also think that it will get much better when iPhone OS 4.0 comes out.

Probably.

I don't think I'll really need it and I do have an iPhone which I could use whenever I'm not at home or at work (both places well covered with wifi).

But then there's that nagging feeling that if I take the none-3G version, then one day, be sure of it, I'll be somewhere without wifi and really, really need it for something on the iPad...and there and then I'll regret not getting the 3G version.

Now, of course, if the wifi version will be available in Norway about the same time as the rest of the world, while we have to wait for ages for the 3G version, then I might just say "eff this" and get the "regular" one, even though I know there will be some time, down the line where I'll be very annoyed I didn't wait. ;)

i know how you feel!! i have my mobile with the 500MB of data per month, but browsing the internet is a TERRIBLE experience on the small, underpowered phone - and i wouldnt want to be swapping sim cards from mobile to iPad.

the iPad would replace my computer, which only connects to WiFi networks (duh) so i cant see any problems arising where i will be left completely without a connection whilst not moving however every now and then i find myself in the car or at my gf's mums house (no home internet there) where there is only 1bar of 3G signal. i normally tether my nokia mobile to my laptop for an internet connection. with the iPad i doubt that i could tether my mobile to it!

3G seems likely for me, provided that it isnt too expensive - i can wait ;)

come on australian prices!

I would just like to say: I saw this title and started laughing very hard.

I do agree though; I think the iPad is a very capable device with tons of potential both now, and in the future.

I'm looking forward to purchasing it to use in consort with my Macbook Pro.

Camera on the iPad isn't needed at all. If anything it would be as good as the iPhone's camera. I already have an iPhone.

If I want to take a picture regardless I want high quality and I am going to carry my Nikon with me. Off-loading images directly to the device with the adapter is a huge plus for Camera nuts.

This is exactly the device I need when I am sitting and watching TV at night and just want to surf the web without a 6 pound device on my laptop.

Excellent device to have in the car with you on longer trips.

I am so excited about the iPad and can't wait to order mine and have it in my hands!!! Give me iPad!!! I want it now!

Most of the people that say this device sucks, it is just not for them. This is not made for everyone. For some people a laptop would be better and that is awesome. Go buy a laptop. Buy the product that fits your needs. A laptop is more than then what I need for a portable device. iPad is perfect for my needs.

You know, I can definitely see a pattern here. When it first was announced, I thought "What the f*** is that?!?".

A couple hours later, I started to warm to it. Now, I'm seriously excited to get one. Same with a lot of people, there was loads of hate threads after it was announced, and now there are much more people changing their minds. I can see the mind-boggling potential for this device, and after reading some developers blogs, they are too. I can't wait to see the apps they create.

Multi-Touch Photoshop? Or Logic Pro, Reason.... The screen size and the power is there, and you can bet the developers are going to squeeze every drop out of it.

did you take a second and actually look at the complaints for the original iphone?

price too high - 2 months later apple dropped the price by 33%

no 3G - apple added 3G a year later

lack of applications - apple added app store 1 year later

no cut and paste - apple added cut and paste 2 years later

at&t exclusivity - still people unhappy with it

etc.

guess what? those nerd complaints were 100% on the money. the iphone 2G was not a success. it wasn't until iphone 3G when apple addressed some of the major complaints that it really took off

AT&T exclusivity - still makes sense. 77 countries, only Verizon is CDMA.

Yes, those things were all added later, but that didn't stop me from being an early adopter, and I even got used to not having cut and paste! It didn't turn out to be as crucial as I thought. I'm betting a lot of the whiners still haven't bought one, just because they never intended to but wanted to whine. Kinda like "I was going to give you some money, but not now that you _____blah blah blah_____"

But the archives of the threads when the iPod was first announced! Man, that's some comedy gold there...

This is exactly the device I need when I am sitting and watching TV at night and just want to surf the web without a 6 pound device on my laptop (sic).
Completely agree. Also my 2006 MBP doubles as a griddle, same way my G4 TiBook did, so that makes me even less likely to want to mess around with a laptop while on the couch.

And I have to agree with trashy; I miss the days of a more closed off Mac community. Glad that Apple is doing well, however.

one more thought - I haven't heard a single person talk about what Steve Jobs looked like!

No, but truthfully Boost, I don't think I would need it. My vision was really blurry the first night and my eye watered and was sore yesterday, but now it feels fine - it's just looking through the floaters that is bad. It's worse when I think about them. It would be to you like having several hairs hanging in front of your eye and you can't brush them away.

I'm so pumped for this thing that I'm having a real hard time waiting to preorder it. When o when will they let me go ahead and reserve mine so I know I'll have it when they start shipping?

I'm afraid I'll have buyer's remorse if I don't get the most memory (64GB) plus 3G. I might not use 3G often, but what if I do need to use it? And if I don't get the 3G option, then when I go to sell this thing for the 2nd or 3rd gen, how many people would want to buy it without 3G functionality.....

So I'm in for the 64GB +3G I think. Which means a 3 month wait which is going to kill me.

I'd feel much better if they went ahead and let me preorder it though.

I think people hold Apple to such high standards and I believe Apple holds themselves to those same standards.

But I think people want Apple to cater to everyone and you possibly can't. I think a lot of people wanted a full on tablet computer like you see other companies make and if Apple did make such a device it would not be at the $500 price tag.

The way the iPad is makes using very easy and simply. Everything is straight and to the point. The lack of Flash does not bother me. There are better methods of web design without Flash. I cannot see them ever adding Flash in at all ever. It would bring sites like Hulu into play and that competes with Apple. Apple is a business and they have to make money. Without making money they cannot continue to make the great products they do. I hate added support videos anyways. If I want a video I will encode it myself and load it on the device.

Those are just my rambling thoughts.

Good enough !

When I was watching the keynote address I honestly was kind of disappointed because as a university student, I was hoping there would be handwriting recognition and, say, ability to mark, annotate e-text-books.

But the $499 price point surprised me. Its just $10 more than its closest counterpart, the Amazon Kindle DX, but completely destroys it with its features.

My only regret, I was hoping they wouldn't name it iPad. Really.. this apart, I love it !

I'm really digging the case for this thing! They did a good job on it.

love it, going to get it, iwork and the case, now I just have to decide if I need 16 or 32...

anyone else actually get super excited for Numbers? i've made many a spreadsheet, this looks powerful and actually easy to use.

The case is nice but I do wanna see what 3rd Party Vendors are going to make for it.

Now I did notice one thing... It said the power adapter is 10W. A USB only putputs at 5W. I wonder why for the extra 5... I am sure it will charge from the USB... or maybe the Wall Charger charges it at a faster rate??? Any ideas...

I wish Apple would give us a hint on when we will be able to order it. It's driving me crazy.

If they can get multitasking (at least two apps) and flash implemented before launch of the 3g version, I will be much happier..
