I have not had any freezes/restarts, etc. while working so far since removing the extensions listed in Post #162 (and I worked it pretty hard yesterday using ALL my Adobe apps)

However, the Mac Pro did logout this morning after it went to sleep and I was greeted by the Login screen asking for my password this afternoon when I woke it up. On the plus side, for the first time I actually got a Crash Report - fairly short too. (See attached)...

Well, I guess there is something going on again! Opened tiny AI file this afternoon and screen froze for about 10 seconds as I tried to save the file to my Desktop as a PDF, but finally came back up and allowed me to save the file. I then quit AI and double-clicked the PDF in the Finder and when it opened in Acrobat Pro, the whole machine locked up - finally had to hold down the power button to force a shutdown. These are both somewhat new behaviors, but not encouraging.

Time to disable sleep and see if you make through 24 hours without panic ~ ??

Well so much for the Adobe CC wipe and reinstall!

Tonight I woke the Mac Pro from sleep (no problem). Launched Lightroom Classic, made some edits and quit the app (no problem). Launched Adobe Illustrator - just to check to see if all my workspace was saved from yesterday - it was, so I just hit Command-Q to quit Illustrator. Mac Pro crashed and auto-restarted (same old problem!).

Here is the crash report that was submitted (does anyone know how to read these)?

One "consistent" thing I see is the EVERY freeze/restart I have experienced during working hours happens within the first 30 seconds of launching an app. If it survives the first 30 seconds, I can usually work in it intensively for an hour or more without issues. I have not had any app quit under heavy load - it is always following "launching" while it is still loading assets perhaps in the background?

As far as the restarts during sleep, that "might" be occurring during scheduled launching of CCC for backups?

Whether during sleep or when launching an app manually, the freezes are always random - never consistent.

Trash preferences on app start with same result? Shift-Option when click app to load.
I have tried that over the past 3 weeks, but no change. Also last Friday I finally (reluctantly) trashed everything I could find "Adobe" on my Mac Pro. Also downloaded and ran the Adobe CC Cleaner Tool and removed ALL my Adobe apps and CC. Reinstalled and 3rd time I launched Illustrator - again with the freeze/restart?

Apple Support also called me back today and offered to just have me send back my Mac Pro for a new one - they are out of ideas. Not sure how that would work now that I have swapped out my Ram and sold the factory installed modules last week. He said he does not have the authority to just send out another MPX module to test, but does have the authority to send out a replacement machine? Not sure what I would get - a new machine or a refurb?

^^^^If you wanted to go that route it would work. They would send you the new Mac and you would hold your Current Mac until the new one arrives. You would then transfer the RAM from the new machine to your current one and the old RAM to the new machine along with the other stuff that is inside your current NcMP.

OR - You could just swap GPUs.

May have to take them up on the offer. They are supposedly reviewing some more recent diagnostics I sent them today. Should know something tomorrow.

The only thing you can try yet is safe mode.

The GPU Drivers are not loaded and I am very sure that this is also the Problem on your System.

I have tried really everything and sooner or later the Problem comes back everytime. The only successful Test was the exchange of the W5700X to a Vega II.

There seems to be a Problem with the Navi Drivers and/or RDNA. You can find a lot of posts by other Users on Google to that topic and also Windows Users reporting same experience with Adobe CC and/or Chrome on Launch after wake up.

Btw what really helps me to stopp Illustrator from crashing during work (not wake up) was to delete the preferences and cashes in Library. You can find that Solution also on the Adobe Community. Maybe that works for you as well. Fingers crossed.

UPDATE: Apple Tech Support had me create a new APFS volume on the factory SSD a couple days ago and had me reinstall the OS and migrate everything from my TM backup again. As always seemed to work for about 24 hours, then Illustrator froze up last night on launch (again). They said if this did not fix my problems, they would agree to ship me a new replacement w5700x to try. Looks like I will have to try that, but I doubt it will cure the issue - I agree that this is probably "a Problem with the Navi Drivers and/or RDNA".

Unfortunately, I cannot afford to send them another $2,000 for a GPU upgrade just to fix a new $8,000 computer that apparently just was not ready for release? (Especially since 80% of my revenue has been placed on hold during these lockdowns)! I also have no use for the additional power of the Vega II. Apple made it clear they cannot "upgrade" my card even if that would fix the issue (on their dime) - my only option would be to spend 25% more out of pocket to "possibly" fix their failure. I don't know what their actual cost is in a Vega II, but they seem to be able to pay tech support people for hours of their time and have no problem paying to replace an entire computer with shipping to try to solve the issue? Of course, they would have to admit there is a problem with the w5700x first, and that could be months or years away if ever. From all the Apple feedback I have received, they apparently don't think there is anything wrong with the w5700x implementation (of course 2/3 of the people with that card on this forum that have responded to my poll so far say they have no problems at all with it). So, I guess I just bought a "lemon"?

I feel for you. Really sorry to hear about the headaches -- this is certainly not what anybody signs up for after spending so much money on a system.

The good news is I don't think you bought a lemon. The issues you're experiencing are consistent with what others and I have experienced w/ the same card. It will eventually get addressed.

Hopefully, the replacement W5700X card will work. It's possible there was a bad batch.

One good thing is ~ This new card will put the GPU argument to rest. If your issues remain - it has to do with your additional hardware/software connections/installs.

Not necessarily.

Apple is sending him a different W5700X card to try, so if the new card addresses the issue then all it proves is that he had a bad W5700X card (possible, but unlikely).

My hunch is that the problem is with the W5700X driver or W5700X related issue. To rule out additional hardware/software connections/installs as a culprit, would need to first try Pro Vega II card since it's already been shown here in this thread that doing so addresses the syptoms that @choreo is experiencing.

Sorry to hear that again! Have you already exchange your System or at least the GPU?

In the meantime I‘ve received my new Mac Pro, which I configurated right from the Start with Vega II and a higher CPU as well. Great support from Apple all over the time, very friendly, communicative and result oriented. The other MP returned to Apple, the hole process was very fast and totally easy.

I really hope there will be a adequate solution for you as well.

My new Mac Pro runs perfect from the first launch! It is noticeable better than the other one without any issue so far as I know it from my other Macs before.

I would outright tell Apple no. Not when you can see many other customers here have the issue. I’m in the process with Apple currently. They have sold me a defective card. It’s not worth the money I paid for it as it doesn’t work as it should. It’s Frankly disgraceful.

They are still not able to approve a new card anyway. Shutdowns are getting more frequent. Just had this one:

Have you tried the new W5700X card that they sent you yet? Assuming it doesn't address the issue, what is Apple's next step?

The system is under warranty so you should be getting close to where Apple replaces the machine if unwilling to fess-up and acknowledge the issue (including a date when a fix will be available).

Keep an eye out for No MCA data found. It's typically an indication of logic board replacement from Apple with MBP's.

The Tech I am working with is still trying to get approval to send me a replacement card. He said the next step would be to take the machine in to an Apple Store to replace the logic board, but there are none within hours from my location and I would have to either get a hotel room or drive back several hours again to pick it up, so I improbably hosed. Last week it sounded like they would just ship me a new machine, but that keeps changing.

If they had just said up front that I would have to pay another $2000 to get a Mac Pro that would function, I would have never bought it - and now I have thousands of dollars already tied up in PCI cards, ram and monitors to make it work!

1. Why would you put your health at risk to go to an Apple Store in the middle of a pandemic? That's a stupid suggestion on the support engineer's part, even if it were a practical option for you to drive to a nearby store.

2. Personally, I would NOT be OK with a system board replacement. In principle, this crosses a line where they're just whoring out your machine (and your time) to play replace-a-part hoping the problem goes away. Hypothetically, even if the new system board addresses the issue -- and it probably won't -- would you still want the system? You'll essentially end up with a refurbished system when you paid for a new one.

I agree (but of course "I" would). I don't even think the nearest Apple Store is open? If I can get them to send a new card and that does not work, I will try to push for a machine replacement. Of course, with the same card, that may be a waste of time too? I notice a lots of posts with similar issues popping up on other forums for other machines that have some version of the 5700 especially in Catalina.
