Seriously?

This was their laziest release to date, people still defend them ?
If you don't like it, go somewhere else (Windows, Linux, Android, whatever). Period.

Apple is releasing mass-market products, not custom build hardware and software.

If Apple would offer custom solutions, then I'd demand Nvidia GPUs in their hardware, because I need Nvidia to get things done. For everything except reading/writing/web/email/photo/video work. I don't get my wish. The past couple of years Apple locked down the eco system further, my fully loaded MBP16 can't be used anymore for what I bought it. I now have a fully loaded Razer laptop (hello Nvidia RTX5000) in addition. I don't want to carry around a MBP16 and a Razer + iPad. I could rant now that Apple won't let me run macOS on a M1 iPP or a hybrid macOS/iPadOS. Sure would love to see it, or at least full external monitor support for iPadOS. Guess what, Apple doesn't care and will continue to make products for the mass-market and make tons of money selling them.

Where does that leave me? I don't know. I might have to offload everything Nvidia to the cloud (or at least a desktop) and connect remotely. I might drop the MBP and try a Linux + iPad approach. I might have to drop Apple altogether. For the first time in over 20 years, I have no idea what Apple is doing for me except for giving me trouble and think about problems I never had before. From a business point of view, they're absolutely making the right decisions for them. They're selling more devices than ever and make more profit.

And maybe, just maybe, Apple will give me what I want/need in the future, at least when it comes to the iPP as a full MBP replacement (the Nvidia ship's sailed). And while I'm hoping for it, I'm not expecting it and buy hardware based on wishful thinking.

All that being said, I totally agree it was their laziest release/announcement yet. But again, they don't owe us anything. If you're a shareholder, then all you can expect from them is to make profits and that's what they do.

I'm torn between my Gen 1 and Gen 2. Or my Motorola Xoom or Asus Transformer Infinity TF700T. Then there's my original Fire tablet and Samsung 10.1. I still have them all but I think I'll stick with my 2021 12.9 Pro.
Motorola Xoom FTW

Bought one when it came out and I was anti-apple .... few weeks later it was gathering dust and I had an iPad 2 :)

Apple showed their true colours today, the M1 iPad was nothing more than a easy marketing cash grab.

They basically gave their customers the middle finger, never seen anything more lacklustre than iOS/iPadOS 15, all that hype about the M1 and extra ram was never going to benefit us in the end.

Love my apple products, but I won’t be upgrading as often as I have in the past, it’s time apple started earning our money, leave out new features and hardware that can easily be added to new products, you won’t be getting my money from now on.

Everyone true colours eventually come out, apple showed theirs today in a BIG way.

Lol

Guess, I will never have to worry about spending tens of thousands of dollars on "Pro" Macs at least for the foreseeable future.
That's probably the case for most consumers.

Yet there's never enough compute power for some tasks, that's why there's a market for $100k to $250k workstations and multi-million dollar clusters. If I had the choice between these and a $25k Mac Pro only using 1kW, then I'd pick the latter (and yes, that's wishful thinking).

As far as the M1 successor goes, what I'd like to see is more monitors supported (not display link), some more RAM (32/64) for virtual machines and better graphics performance. And those features alone are enough to make a gap between the existing M1 and M-whatever and justify the existence of the M1 in the iPP.

At least Apple build their products to last for years - with support. Today's iPad Pros with the M1 and 8GB - 16GB RAM will be able to run for 5 years flawlessly. And for alot of consumers this is important as the investment is worth it and they aren't looking to upgrade every year.
I have the first generation iPad Pro 12.9" and it has held up very nicely (wish I paid for more storage though!).

Someone posts their opinion about feeling let down and here comes the horde of fanboys trashing ones opinion.
Its because of fanboys, who would gladly buy turd wrapped in whatever Apple would market it wrapped in for the price of gold and still feel morally superior, were getting such subpar OS update. Thats funny.

On a side note, seeing how little is being offered with iPadOS 15 and taking into consideration that miniLED in 12.9 looks more like disaster to happen in longer term on certain iPads, Im considering cancelling my 12.9 order and get either 2020 on sale(locally it seems that those have been sold out already) or Air 4 or 11 M1 at best.

Its not that I had exorbitant hopes, but putting M1 and then offering it with 8/16GB of RAM and giving us such a poor OS update is just sad, no true external display support, no desktop level multi tasking, limited files support(AFAIK). I dont think it was unreasonable for people to expect Mac level features with such monstrous power on a tablet.
It might have been tho, to expect it from Apple.

the M1 chip and extra ram was only introduced for easy sales, nothing more, nothing less, stop defending them.

While I agree today’s software announcements were very lacklustre, I dont quite get why we should be unhappy about the fact that the iPad hardware was refreshed with more ram and a faster CPU.

I bet if they hadn’t increased the ram some people would have complained about them holding back on purpose.

So putting down $100k+ on a Tesla/BMW/Audi/VW/etc. I should expect fully autonomous driving while I take a nap in the back?

Meanwhile, this is reality:
It's called wishful thinking. No worries, we all have it. Doesn't mean we get what we want.

But why did people buy iPP M1s as though there would be no more to buy after WWDC?

Apple is a business. It’s only purpose (to quote too many godforsaken Finance majors) is to maximize shareholder value.

They don’t care what you want.

(And it thought WWDC was boring and disappointing.)

This op spent days posting continuously about how today would transform the ipad pros, and anyone with doubts would essentially eat their words. Well the expectations were too high, unrealistic and Apple are in it for money period. They have a very long road map planned with minor incremental updates year on year, just like they have been doing since Steve Jobs rescued them from the edge of oblivion. This year is no different. They are still a design company first and consumer led - it is working.

It's OK to be disappointed, I also have been because I had bought into the idea that the "next thing" would be amazing and change my world. Apple make great products but nothing changes that much from the year before. I've been waiting years to be able to get a damn iPhone I can use because OLED wrecks my eyes, but Apple could care less. You just have to be realistic, grounded and buy what you need because these products are tools.

I always take WWDC previews with a grain of salt because there might be more coming where they can't show their hands to unannounced products. Happens with the iPhone often.
How often are "tent pole" features missing from the WWDC preview?

So after drenching the boards with endless milk and honey promises that WWDC would blow everyone’s minds, now you‘re disappointed and you’re drenching them again with post after post of vinegar and bile.

Maybe focusing on something else for a while would do yourself and the rest of us some good.
