Just gonna piggyback here instead of starting a new thread, but does anyone know how this will work if I upgrade on a different line/number than I plan to use with my phone?
I think it will generally just activate your iPhone with the number you use to upgrade…once finished setting up you should be able to remove that number and add the one you want to use

So no SIM tray in Canada phones?

You can clearly see the SIM tray on the Canada product page.

I worry the carriers will charge an activation fee. I switch back and forth between iOS and Android every few weeks, so this is a concern for me as well.
This change was driven by Apple. Carriers dragged their feet on eSIM since it makes it easier to switch carriers. Market forces won’t tolerate activation fees for very long when there is no longer a physical card or visit to a store required.

Stinks of some BS Apple and the cell companies wanted in order to control more things. Why else would they provide additional incentives this year when trading in with a carrier.
The carriers don’t want this. We could have had eSIM years ago. eSIM makes it easier to switch carriers since it’s all digital.

The carriers offered similar incentives last year. I know because I traded in my iPhone 12 to T-Mobile rather than sell it on Swappa because I got more for it that way.

Canadian 14 Pros do have the SIM tray but do NOT have 5G mmWave technology. So that's the trade-off you'd be making. Not sure if any other bands are missing.

True, but also consider the average 5G speed across the U.S. is 50-150Mbps. That’s well under what mid band 5G can offer, which is 3.5Gbps.

I also wonder...

Is this an agreement apple signed with the carriers to drive folks away from MVNO's? They do not have eSim, and likely wont, but this is a way to force iPhone customers to a network that supports eSim.

Personally, I am currently using a verizon physical SIM and a mobile eSim, so I am not against big carriers since I need fast unlimited data, but this creates a pretty big rift between the have's and have nots.

In a way, this seems quite anti-competetive.
You got it all twisted here. People using MVNOs do so to save money. Do you think they'd be considering switching to a big carrier and pay more money just so they could enjoy a newer iPhone? I doubt it! Apple would be the one losing money in the short term but this is one way to force adoption of eSIMs. They're known to force people to adopt future tech like they did with the removal of optical drive in MacBooks or removal of Adobe Flash support from OS X.

It might be mightily inconvenient in the short term but is probably for the better. The smaller carriers had been complacent with pSIMs till now but now they're strong-armed to implement eSIMs. Give it a year to two.

eSIM is the future. It’s like the headphone jack you can run away and find another product that’s going to temporarily support it a little bit longer but eventually it’s gone. Sometimes Apple does things a little bit early. There are eSIM carriers around the world to include ones just designed for traveling. Eventually all carriers will support eSIM.

Clearly they are doing this to combat theft. I don’t think it’s going to work because criminals will come up with new ways but it’s a cat and mouse game. For people traveling it will support multiple eSIM’s that can be just switched in setting.

Honestly, plenty of small carriers have esims already. I have red pocket and usmobile on my iPhone 13 and an empty SIM card slot. Also Mint Mobile, att prepaid, and a few others I can’t think of right now.

Just buy from a UK seller on Ebay.

There are loads every year, especially selling the 1TB model. Although at launch, given the price here is £1750 (just £1550 last year!) for the top model Max, they'll likely be on Ebay at £2500 (US$2900).

I had an eSIM when I traveled to Italy recently with my iPhone 13 Max Pro. Really seemless. And the price seemed cheaper to me (paid $13 for a 10GB plan via Airalo). Had great service. I didn't have a local calling number, just data, but didn't need a local phone line anyway. Physical SIM cards are great, but there are good eSIM providers now. Betcha they'll be even more now.

Yes, it will not work for some users like you. But that's the point. If Apple doesn't force it, carriers around the world will not adopt esim and we will be stuck with ancient technology.

At some point we have to move on, even it causes inconvenience to some. Hopefully, carriers around the world will adopt esim soon

Encouraging comments, TY.

Apple has always caused some transition pain - as in pulling floppy disks (the physical SIM tray is a little digital floppy drive) and headphone jacks - but that’s where everyone, not just Apple is going. Apple seems to ‘jump the gun’ sometimes, but early adoption of new technology and the elimination of old tech is their business model. And it’s been quite successful.

I’m not sure that I like it for a year or so, but I am sure that eSIM is where everyone is going, so might as well get used to the changes.

Just curious for all those wanting a physical SIM slot…

Is there some reason a second phone that has a SIM slot won't do for travel?

If I were to travel outside the States I'd be taking my iPhone 6s+. If it gets lost, stolen or damaged, I'm out a seven year old phone - not my primary phone.

Me too, I have an iPhone 6 and thought of the same thing.

I was thinking too that traveling with a brand new iPhone 14 (whatever model you get) is also something that's going to make you a big old target. A thief is probably going to go for that before they go for the 6 or 6s+.

A wifi egg is almost always a better option to swapping SIM cards when travelling.
Do non US phones have mmWave? Or is that how they stop you importing?

I’m 100% in the same boat, I travel to Sweden ( for three months every year)… still have my prepaid SIM card from high school 25 years ago. So, for the first time since iPhone 5 I will not do my annual upgrade… this is a total deal killer for me.

But if I take a 6s+, I won’t be able to take pics using the photonic engine!

1. If I have an eSIM only (a US version), and I own the phone outright, what’s the issue with a post-paid foreign plan? I can cancel it at any time since the phone isn’t financed with rhem, right? And if I stop paying they’ll cancel it for me, lol
Yes this is actually the benefit of eSIM, you dont have to go to a retailer and get a sim when travelling.
The issue is that uptake is not universal. It may only be certain carriers or none at all in some countries.
But that benefit exists with dual eSIM plus a physical SIM as in iPhone 13.

OK, that's an answer. As long as my phone takes decent pictures that's all I care about, but I can see why others would want the best phone camera they can get.

Honestly, I'd be taking a dedicated camera (probably a pack of those disposable kinds if they still exist) but everyone is different.

Was thinking crap, I have Xfinity Mobile and they don't have esim but googled it and found an article from yesterday that they now do.
I was thinking the same thing too until I found that article. Almost like they got forced into supporting ESim thanks to the 14 line…
