Today, a leaked image of the upcoming Apple Watch (see below, from the macrumors article) indicates that the HIDEOUS MONSTROSITY of the red dot is gone, replaced by more subtle thin circle on what will likely be a gloriously improved revision to Apple’s groundbreaking smartwatch, first introduced to the public nearly 4 years ago.

Apple has spoken. Goodbye to the red dot, and good riddance.

Lol.

With this logic, the sleeping breathing light on old MacBook Pro is ‘hideous montrosity’? Piano black on iPhone 7 is ‘hideous montrosity’?

Design changes all the time. Calms down. I think it only tell us that style of crown will be changed regularly from now on.

Love that watch face. Praying it won’t be exclusive for S4.

It’s an interesting move by Apple with the new red digital crown. It’s not exactly fully deleted, but nor is it is obtrusive as it was with the Series 3. It’s almost like Apple wanted to make this minimalistic as possible with the red digital crown with this new design, but didn’t completely remove it either, which I think would show they were not confident there decision with the red digital crown from the Series 3 from last year.

While it wouldn’t put me off buying the watch if there’s a compelling reason to upgrade, I find the red ring fussier than the red dot. It may look better with a simpler watch face though.

My guess is that it'll be exclusive like the Explorer face is to S3 cellular watches, but there will be a better reason for it this time: the larger screen is needed to fit everything on and still maintain an acceptable font size for the complications.

Yeah.. knowing Apple I definitely don’t hold my breath.

No, the red dot was a hideous monstrosity. That doesn't mean other things are as well.

Only on a tech forum is the red dot completely blown out of proportion. Literally, anyone around me with the Series 3 Apple Watch has _never_ even commented on the red dot. Things tend to be dissected more intricately on a tech forum then they do in the real world.

Wait, this is the real world. Everything else is but an illusion.

the red dot was a marketing gimmick and nothing else, now that the design has changed in a big way it's no longer necessary

It wasn't even a good one though. It literally made people speak badly about it. I heard some people say they may opt out of cellular because it was so annoying looking lol. How could that be positive?

Or it just means that they're still keeping a WiFi only version this year, and therefore they still need a red indicator on the LTE model.

If a small red dot annoys a person so badly, I would tend to think that perhaps one must look a little deeper into one's own life, desires, and thoughts. It's a freakin' dot.. let it go.. LOL

This is THE Apple Watch now. S4 makes S3 look like garbage. I’m sorry. It’s true.

I think the new red ring is a fair compromise compared to the awful red dot. Not sure why we need to compromise with Apple about this but hey...

I’m neutral on the red dot, so I don’t care either way if it exists or doesn’t. But when you say ‘People speak badly about it’, to what fraction of those people around you compare to the millions of Apple Watches that they sell on annual basis? Clearly the red dot isn’t deflecting away from the success of Watch, considering its a minuscule cosmetic feature that doesn’t detract from those appreciating the watch for what it is. Again, the red dot is more of an issue on the internet than it is in the outside world.

Yeah.. because people never speaks stupid opinions, especially on the internet.

People’s entitled to theirs but that doesn’t mean they’re the expert.

I mean I'm pretty picky, but yeah if there was a car I really liked and all of a sudden they changed the trim of the car to only include black side mirrors which sometimes contrast poorly with lets say a red body color or sport blue body color, but at the same time they didn't offer a body color matched side mirrors, then yes that would be a factor I'd consider.

I'm all for a proper contrasting color match, like the one in your avatar picture, but if you'd have preferred lets say a watch face with blue or green in it, the red would be a super turn off imo. To each their own, but I don't like how confidently that was put on their without thinking of how it could negatively impact the overall look, which it certainty does in some instances.

I think of it as more or less right. Not everyone cares, but that doesn't mean it's not a poor decision. Making it less obtrusive is good, I wouldn't have had a problem with it had they introduced it like this last year to begin with.

The thing that baffles me most about the red dot is that this thread has gone on for 27 pages and has had 669 comments about it.

Doesn’t bother me what color the dot is. I’m usually looking at the watch face and not the side of the watch.

Totally agree with that. My opinion mimics a lot of the other comments here, I think it straight up looks bad sometimes, but I don't think everyone cares. My gripe is with poor decision making. Would you not agree that if they had introduced it like they did this year that it would not have been less of an issue (on the internet)?

Design changes all the time. The majority of it doesn’t happen because the previous one is ‘poor decision’. I’d say it’ll be odder if they didn’t change it for the new generation. (And you can almost be sure that S5 will be changed again).
FWIW, this isn’t the first time the red dot was used. It was also used on the Editon, the most expensive one. (and this doesn’t include the mysterious watch with red dot Tim Cook wore more than a year before Apple launched S3) Put it bluntly, red dot had always stayed with Apple Watch. Guess they didn’t know it’s a poor decision after all these...

Personally I think black dot on my S0 SS is boring. Red dot is vibrant. And why not more? Maybe rainbow dot in the future? That would be ace!

Hideous monstrosities rightly incite strong feelings.

Even more baffling and a bizarre reality, the Series 3 Apple Watch has been almost available a year and the ‘red dot’ is _still_ being discussed as if fits with the most inconvenient atrocity Apple has ever released, it really goes to show you how _absurd_ the Internet can be at times with strange obsessions over the littlest things that most will never discuss in their daily lives outside tech forums. The Red Dot is and never will be a relevant topic outside this thread.

You’ve clearly never spent time on watch forums, where the tiniest details are debated.

I personally do think the red dot looked bad, but I am a watch nerd.
