Yesterday on Daily Mail UK:

"Ikea founder dies aged 91 after setting the business up when he was just 17 and growing it to 412-stores worth $72bn... but still wore second hand clothes and drove a 15-year-old car"

I bet this guy didn't wear a cellular Apple Watch or carry an iPhone X to show off his wealth and status. :)

Even frugality is a way of calling attention to ones self. In the large cities driving an EV has become more attractive to those looking for a partner than luxury or exotic cars.

Yeah... I only bought the Hermes because I'd sold a collector's item on eBay for twice what I paid for it and I had a bit of mad money to move up from a regular SS to the Hermes. I did like the watch faces and the strap was nice, but it wasn't worth double the cost of a regular SS to get watch faces and you can buy the strap separately if you want a nice strap for an AW.

I sold the Hermes when I bought my S3 SS and pretty much paid for it from the proceeds, except for AC plus and taxes.

That's a really good example of people buying things for perfectly rational reasons that have nothing to do with projecting some kind of status or superiority. It could be functionality, it could be economics, or it could be some other reason. Great post/great example.

What makes you so sure that wearing an LTE AW or using an X is trying to show off wealth and status?

Do you mean that if YOU wore an LTE AW or used an X it would be because YOU were trying to show off wealth and status?

I'm calling bull**** on your ability to know why anyone other than yourself is doing either of these.

Actually I was only pointing out that people with real wealth don't need status symbols. I personally don't believe that any Apple product implies wealth or status. I put the quote in for fun in response to what a few people on this thread and another thread that was closed two days ago were saying. Sorry to get you worked up. [/QUOTE]

I have an LTE AW. an X and 10.5" IPP. I have them because I like technology and my other devices were a few years old so it was time to upgrade. All three are with me most of the time. The IPP is at least mounted next to me in the car when I'm out. Some might see them and think "That guy spent some money!". Yes, that is true but it's because I like them. Much cheaper than the car hobby I had years ago :)

Because someone has an X and apple watch with a red dot they are showing off their wealth?

If most people made their coffee at home and didn't go to a starbucks or dunkin every day in 5 to 9 months they could buy what ever watch they wanted. So based on your logic someone that gets their coffee from a coffee shop every day is showing off their wealth.

There seems to be a reading comprehension problem on this forum. I put the quote in for fun. I don't believe any Apple product is a status symbol. There are some people on here who do if you read the posts, but I'm not one of them and I don't see how my post would give the impression that I am.

Are we really crying over a RED DOT.. I have a SB SS LTE and the dot is so much of an after thought for me lol... who cares I never even notice it... EVER... and I love it because when I’m out people are like oh you have the Series 3... we can really be anal about things in this forum lol... what color would you have preferred WHITE?

Obviously you are new to the Apple world. Lol

When Apple change the icon to iTunes one would have sworn Apple abruptly shuttered their doors.
FACTS HEADS WERE EXPLODING & they hung Jony Ive in effigy in the town square

I may have quoted your post because I was far too lazy to go back and find the previous comment. Had to give up coffee to get my watch and X....Sorry

I'm sorry too. I reacted after reading 2 negative responses to what I thought was just a fun post. I don't usually strike out like that and I apologize.

Thank you. No worries. We’re all the other side of a keyboard.

I think the problem is that it's really hard to sort humor from hate on forums like this and, honestly (speaking for myself), sometimes we read or write quickly and don't think about what the other person might have been saying or how other people might read what we're writing. Apologies for misunderstanding (and I completely agree with your post).

It's all good. I typed the reply just above before I read this, which is even better.

This thread has been a particularly contentious one, starting with the original post. 26 pages and counting on about 5 square millimeters of red? :D  :(

I agree and thank you for your reply. Check out this thread on the iPhone forum (it's moved to the second page now) for a contentious post. I couldn't figure out how to make it a link.
"how is the iphone x a status symbol if 29 million have it?" This is the thread where I wanted to put that quote but it was closed before I got to it. There is a lot of discussion on whether the iPhone X and Apple Watch are status symbols and my quote would have been a lot more appropriate there. :)

If a Series 4 launches without a red Digital Crown fall 2018, then the inane arguments can supposedly stop over a minute feature that was never a "Problem" to begin with.

GROOOAN. I just want to say that anything that's made in the tens of millions, and that anyone who can make, find, borrow or even steal enough money to buy can walk out of the store with *right now,* is just not a status symbol. It just can't be, right? It's a contradiction in terms. And if the only reason someone feels like they're special or that their life is worthwhile is because of their phone or watch, they should be asking why that is (at least that's my opinion). Fun, or interesting to learn about, or useful, I get. Status symbol, that's a mystery. :) And there are posts in that thread that are really eye-popping. But hey, it ain't my life.

Steve would never have allowed it.

In fairness to Steve Jobs, we all know that he was very unpredictable and his mindset could never be fully established of how he wanted things. Although I am willing to believe the red dot may not have existed under his leadership, you truly never know.

I’m left handed so my watch sits on my right wrist and the crown is on the right side as well so it generally can’t be seen by most...especially since it’s cold where I live currently so I’m wearing long sleeves, jackets, etc.

I’ve had one on my space gray aluminum lte AW 3 for about two months and it’s holding up rather well so far.

I had mine on since October with no issues!

But the red dot has slowly grown on my over time as I see it on other people’s watches as the AW grows in popularity. So I took off my WatchDot for the time being. They come in a 3 pack so I have two more backups in case I go back to hating the dot. :)

Yes, it looks awful and inelegant. While red is used on some watches as a status symbol, the examples I've seen are quite brash, 'in your face' watches. It's the equivalent of stripes and a spoiler on the side of a car.‍♂️
The Apple Watch isn't that, thankfully. In addition, I don't see the Apple Watch or having one with a 'red dot' as a symbol of wealth. Perhaps more a symbol of one's priorities in life. Especially in these days of low interest credit, an Apple Watch is really is quite accessible to many people. Some people may choose to do other things with their money. Let's be honest, the advantages of a smart/cellular watch are quite niche (at the moment).
The red dot certainly put me off upgrading my S2. That and the fact the cellular one is only available on one carrier in the UK.
Fingers crossed for September that the S4 will not have a red dot.

Today, a leaked image of the upcoming Apple Watch (see below, from the macrumors article) indicates that the HIDEOUS MONSTROSITY of the red dot is gone, replaced by more subtle thin circle on what will likely be a gloriously improved revision to Apple’s groundbreaking smartwatch, first introduced to the public nearly 4 years ago.

Apple has spoken. Goodbye to the red dot, and good riddance.

the red dot was a marketing gimmick and nothing else, now that the design has changed in a big way it's no longer necessary

Hideous dot replaced by a hideous watch face, lol. I like some of the complications individually but it’s a bit much all together like this. Anyway, I’m very glad that I waited another year so I could avoid the stupid bright red dot and get a larger display area. Even my wife is on board with getting her first Apple Watch this cycle.
