Team? Well the buck stops with the Chief Design Officer. But then it's increasingly evident Jony Ive lost his way when he lost the one man that brought out the best in him and kept a very tight rein on the worst.

Pre-2011... "we need to differentiate the cellular model" SJ: "I wanna see 20 different options in the metal by daybreak tomorrow or else I'll be firing some of you"

Post-2012..." a red dot you say? Uh ok that'll do I guess. Right, job done, what's next on the list?"

Yeah, the red dot just screams 'Ooooooooh, look at me, I have a series 3!'

I thought of that and find it annoying. I think that if they wanted to differentiate, going with another option (white, for example) would have been a better call. A bit more subtle. That said, I don't dislike the red, really. They had those on the gold edition watches, so it's not like this is the first one they've produced with a red dot. They had white on the rose gold edition watches. I would prefer white.

I can get past the red dot, honestly. There are a lot of high-end watches with one or more extravagant design flourishes. I see the red dot as the same. Sort of like red stitching on a black leather band or a vibrant color on the second hand.

I am a proud Series 2 owner (since October 2016), and wear the Watch every day. It encourages me to exercise, eat healthier, and monitor my heartrate. I can no longer live without one. I'm also ready to upgrade to a faster, more efficient S3, with better battery life, especially with GPS turned on, and of course LTE capability so I can stream music while I run.

There's only one problem - the photos from today's event show a hideous red circle on the otherwise glorious aluminum facade of my beloved Watch. It stands out like a BREAK GLASS IN CASE OF EMERGENCY sign on a white wall. It looks so bad that it seems like a prank, a design that no one would ever consciously approve.

But if it's real, will it hurt sales, or am I simply overreacting?
Not that your title is biased or anything.

Looks fine to me.

Firstly I like the red crown, secondly it is actually not that easy to see. Getting too excited about it seems a bit odd, and there is still the option of buying an Apple Watch without LTE.

Not keen on it but I get why so you know which is LTE and which isn't. Important maybe when it comes to buying from other people or selling

I honestly do not understand the red dot on the crown... At first I thought it was a glowing light in the official product photos - perhaps a light indicating that a call is in progress since the display is so small (wouldn't that be nice), but then I realized that it's just a different color.

Not sure why they would have to differentiate the cellular models (other than a small marking on the back), but if such a marking is necessary, then I think a darker and more understated color would have been more aesthetically pleasing.

If I wanted an overpriced watch with unnecessary garish embellishments, I'd by a Rolex. Having said that, I am still getting an :apple:WATCH 3. :)

They have lost their minds. I have an apple everything, but I won’t be buying this.

I am irrationally upset by this.

I agree. And as a watch app developer I am especially annoyed as I can see it affecting sales at a time when the watch looks to be taking off.

I just don't understand why they have done it. One of the great strengths of the Apple Watch is that you can personalise it with a variety of different coloured straps, and yet the red dot makes this almost irrelevant. If you want an all-black watch then forget it. If you want neutral colours then forget it. If you want a particular colour then it will have to go with red (or be red) or you can forget it.

Totally crazy decision by Apple.

Jony, you won't get a red dot design award like that

The fashion angle is coming in again. The red dot screens Laboutin to me. Trying way too hard! I don’t hate it and wouldn’t avoid the purchase because of it, but I didn’t feel like it makes sense.

I don't love it but I guess it's not a showstopper. I agree with those who wish for a more subtle way of distinguishing the cellular version, such as a fine red ring around the outside or something even more subtle. I have a small concern about the way it will look with other colored watch bands.

It is a decision that seems to clash with Apple's goal of making the watch a very personal, customizable option as it may put off customers who would like to purchase other colors of bands. Will someone really purchase an orange band to go with a watch that has a red dot on the crown? I am not sure; guess we'll have to wait to see.

I suppose if it really clashes, there are always those Watch Dots that someone previously mentioned.

I quite like the red dot. It adds some flair to an otherwise monotonous design. What I don't like is that I can't buy a SS S3 without it. I don't want to spend the extra money for a feature I don't need or want.

I can personally overlook the red dot, as I don't think it's that intrusive. But I certainly prefer my current stainless Apple Watch without it. But being it's completely a cosmetic feature, I would like to know Apples design and thoughts behind this.

Given the lack of LTE support on my network anyway, the Series 2 SS refurb just got a lot more tempting.

Jony Ive should hang his head in shame.
