The standby battery life really is poor. I’ve only had these for about two weeks and it’s already happened that I wanted to use them only to find out they completely emptied overnight. You can’t actually store them at 30% and assume you can use it next time you want to.

It really needs a user adjustable ultra-low power setting (like: go into ultra low power immediately when putting in case) or a on/off toggle.

I charged mine to 100% on Monday and I used them till 91% the same day. From them I haven’t used the headphone any more, but I’ve been checking the battery once every day, though different hours . But always in the afternoon.

tuesday 82%
wednesday 76%
thursday 68%

i actually think, since I keep checking them. I never get into the ultra low power mode cause, the fact of waking them up to check the hour makes them to star the counting of 18 hours from zero again

Crazily, this is probably normal, expected behaviour for a week.

I love the always on aspect during the day, but the absence of a full shutdown is a critical design failing imo. Sure, I probably will use them almost every day. But sometimes I wont. Equally I won’t be using them for a third of my life (when I’m asleep).

In contrast, I use my XM4’s only at work. Every 2.5 weeks I get 6 days off in a row when I don’t use them. When I go back to them, the charge is identical to how I left them. If I had the same usage pattern for the APMs...well, they’d feel plain broken.
Another over-engineered product brought to you by Apple. Don't forget folks, it "just works".

Would somebody mind posting the hard set procedure. Thanks in advance

How to Reset AirPods Max to Factory Settings

  1. Make sure the headphones have some charge by plugging them into a charging point via the supplied USB-C to Lightning Cable.
  2. Press and hold the Noise Controlbutton and the Digital Crown for 15 seconds, until the LED status light at the bottom of the right-hand earcup flashes amber, then white.

update: 95% last night. 24 hours later, took them out the case, they're at 85%. i checked and they weren't connected to any devices during that time. damn i guess 10% is the normal amount of drain. that's horrible. in a couple years that drain is gonna add up to more battery cycles and less battery capacity. I think we should just charge these overnight like we do with any other device. i don't want my battery life to get worse in the long run bc of these 10% drains that will add up day to day. every 10 days you will go through a full cycle of battery while on standby bc of that drain. add that up throughout the years

The best part of the og airpods doesnt work with over ears like the max. I suspect even in the case the og airpods drained but were constantly charged by the case. Leaving these constantly plugged in in theory should count as more cycles though

I feel like by the time the battery really degrades, I will be ready to upgrade these headphones in 2-3 years. I wouldn’t lose my sleep over 10% a day. In my case it’s more like 12%.
I’ve mentioned this before: the drain is inconsistent and sometimes I saw only 3% or even one time it jumped from 51% to 53% overnight, so that might be some very approximate battery readings that the headphone shows. Maybe the actual drain is only 5% in 24 hours and the rest is an approximation. They always keep playing for another hour at 1%, so those battery readings do not show the real thing.

I was using a few days ago, the battery showed almost 100% and this was after a couple of days of no use.
Then, this morning I put them on and I get the "dead" chime. They were stored in the smart case.
Is this a bug? Am I doing something wrong? Am I not activating the smart case correctly?

I have the same issue with the battery dying. it'll go from 100% to 1% overnight while in the case. I contacted Apple about this issue and they told me it's a known issue but the engineers don't recommend replacement. She said they'll get back to me when they find a solution. What if they don't? I'm stuck with these faulty headphones? very annoyed and the response so far.

Ive only had the 100% to 1% drain issue once in owning them a month. normal 24 hour drain is 3-12%. my easy fix is plugging them in when I put them away, takes literally 2 seconds. wont have to worry about battery drain, bug or no bug.

Last night I left them at 8%. 12 hours later they show 1% and I’ve been using them for the past hour or so at 1%. They’re still playing as I type this. They don’t show the correct battery levels. At least, in my case, so the actual battery drain might be way less than what some people think.

After 12 hours in bra my Max still at 100%.
Yea a couple of us here tested and noted that if it “rests” (whether in bra or free) that at 100 it drops very little. Once at 90 or 80% in my case it returns to the usual 10-12% a day

Mines been consistently around 3-5% loss overnight since launch day. Charging roughly every 3 days. Literally never used the underpants case yet.

I'm losing 1% per hour during the daytime when I leave it in the case for a couple of hours here and there, and overnight I lose anywhere between 8 to 16% over 8 hours!

This is not good.

Haven’t even opened the man bra dont need it, won’t be worried about battery drain everything drains if not used, charge once a day, they charge quick and Love how you don’t have to turn them on to use.
Great if you have a Mac and watch, put them on watch opens MacBook and whatever you were watching starts playing.

Yeah. Just tried putting it in case for 4 hours, starting at 69%. Lost 4% in 4 hours.

Hmmm... I've noticed the past few nights that mine have been losing significantly more charge overnight. I think my overnight loss originally was around 6%, but after noticing yesterday morning that it seemed to have dropped a lot more than that from the night before, I noted my charge level last night (34%), and woke up this morning to find it was at 7% (so a 27% drop).

I've also noticed that the headphones seem "sluggish" in responding the past few days... takes them longer to recognize that I've put them on, etc. So I think I'll try the reset procedure.

Been using my AirPod’s Max since Launch Day, over the last few days I’ve been running into some severe battery drain.

For example, last night I took the headphones out of the case with 85% battery, used them for about 15 minutes, put them back into the case.
This morning I get a notification via my iPhone that there was only 5% left. I wasn’t even attempting to connect to the AirPods, I was airplaying to the HomePod in the room. It’s strange that the AirPod Max’s were even awake as they were still sitting in the case.. anyone else experiencing problems like this?
I have been having the same issue. I keep them in the bra at night but it makes no difference. For example this morning I was rushing out the door I grab them cause I was gonna listen to them in and they died within a few minutes. The battery have been completely drained overnight while it was in the braa. So now they go back into the bra and wait until I go home to charge them back up again. Which messages didn’t get to use them.

i’m betting that this is a firmware fix. I hope it comes out soon because this is really annoying.
Until I read this thread I had actually thought that my pair of AirPods Max had a problem and I was wondering if I was going to be able to exchange them with such limited stock

I have an interesting update on this:
I'm losing 1% per hour during the daytime when I leave it in the case for a couple of hours here and there, and overnight I lose anywhere between 8 to 16% over 8 hours!

This is not good.

Day before yesterday, just before bedtime, I charged up the Max to 100%, made sure to disconnect them from all devices (iPhone, iPad, Windows laptop, Watch) and put them in the case. I was occupied the entire day yesterday and did not have a chance to use my Max.

It's been around 38 hours or so now, and they are still at 100%.

The key to not losing charge on long term storage might be to disconnect them from the devices manually instead of depending on the cans to be 'smart' as Apple claims they are. I think this bears further testing. If this hypothesis bears out, then Apple really needs to swallow their pride and update the dial button to function as a power on/off button on long press or something because that would be way easier than having to manually disconnect the Max from every device in radius.
