Have you checked Settings>Bluetooth>AirPods (the little i next to them) and made sure that Ear Detection is turned on? I found that mine has turned itself off twice now, not really sure how.
You can also restart your device as I have found this helps quicker connections and ear detection.

Mine are working pretty good. Pause when I take one out always works.

There was one workout where my music stopped on it's own and stayed stopped for a few minutes then restarted on its own. Don't know the cause and it may have even been a song that didn't want to stream for some reason so may have not been anything to do with the pods.

Just got these today. Love the complete wireless experience, the case, and the instant connection to my iPhone... with that being said there was a few times today that when I would play music from Apple Music, while roaming the city, there was moments where the music would stutter/glitch/fade out like a "scratched CD"

Never had this issue with my Beats X at all (which I returned today upon receiving my AirPods) interesting enough when I left the gym I was able to reproduce the issue in the parking lot. I'd firmly press my iPhone against my thigh while in my pocket and the music would fade every time... it was the weirdest thing.

Could it be my AirPods or my iPhone 7 Plus?

Is there some reason why Apple can't make the right AirPod activate Siri and the left control volume/skipping?

I am going to have to try this as it is infuriating. It seems to have only begun with iOS 10 for me. I have my iPhone connected via Bluetooth to my Apple Watch, my car and my AirPods. My Apple Watch always remains connected as far as I can tell, while my AirPods and car regularly (perhaps every 10-30 minutes) drop connection and then find it difficult to reconnect.

I do really like the AirPods but the software at the moment is fairly poor. The only reason I am keeping them is because when they work they're great. I get hissing far too often, I get the robotic phone calls, I get the unresponsive double tap, I deal with the clunky switching between devices. They're ok, but definitely a "gen 1" product.
Did you try the trick with putting the Watch in to Airplane mode so prevent connection with the iPhone and check if your car Bluetooth remained stable?

Maybe features will be added on an iterative basis. Since the AirPods have upgradeable firmware, it stands to reason that functions could be added.

Not sure what's happened to my right Airpod. I fiddle with a bit whilst it's in my ear because it's a tad loose (my left one fits like a glove) but whilst I was using them today my right one just sounded like it stopped working. I took my left one out and left the right in to see if it worked, it did but very very quietly.

Not sure what the issue could be. Back in the case now but going to see if they work properly once out again.

Had this right Airpods replaced a few weeks ago but it's now happened again. It's the right one this time too.

I wonder if it's because I keep pushing the Airpod in as its a little loose, so wax gets in?

It would limit single bud usability. I wear one Earpod 90% of the time.
That could also be tweaked in settings, whereby you have a number of options to determine what a double tap does with single Airpod use.

Most wouldn't be listening to music with one Airpod, so the skip track function may not be as desired for eg.

Can I ask if you have an Apple Watch? I'm having huge problems with Bluetooth and dropping connection with AirPods and the car and it appears if I put the Apple Watch into Airplane mode so it can't communicate with the iPhone, my problems disappear completely.

Yes. I had my genius appointment yesterday and Apple replaced the two AirPods. Before the replacement, Apple walked through a list of questions specific to AirPod use, including whether you had an active Apple Watch at the time of the issues occurring. They also asked about the environment, how often the problem occurred, etc, etc.

In addition to inconsistent drops of calls, it was the slow motion, robotic incoming calls that prompted me to get these replaced. Not sure if this will solve the problem or not, but time will tell.

Looks like some problems are due to typical Gen 1 issues. I'm sure they will work out in time like they always seem to do.

I notice that the connectivity range with my MacBook Pro is much much shorter than with my iPhone.. Anyone else have this issue?

A solution to this would be to allow Independant setup in settings. They could have the setting:

Use AirPods Independently default (each AirPod has independent limited controls i.e. Both do Siri or play/pause)
Or
Use AirPods Together (each AirPod has different touch functions i.e. Right - play/pause Left - skip/fwd/rwd).

I am on my 2nd pair of Airpods...have had them for ~2 weeks. They were working pretty well thru yesterday. I don't get it sometime they work flawlessly, no stutters, no problems connecting, Siri works. Then out of the blue issues. Yesterday I could NOT get them to connect to my Apple Watch at all. I kept getting the "could not connect make sure Airpods are on & within range of Apple Watch". I could connect to my iPhone but not the watch. It's frustrating to say the least. :(

Have you tried resetting your AirPods? Hold down the pair button on the case with the AirPods inside for at least 15 seconds until the light flashes amber and then white.

I agree fully, with the caveat that Apple's focus is on ease of use. So good luck getting the technically illiterate to understand TWO sets of uses.

I haven't...I guess that will be the next thing I'll try when they won't connect again. I just tried them without doing anything except selecting the watch as the source and they connected. So random.....

Restarting the watch solved this problem for me, but only for a day or so. Fortunately since the recent firmware update, it seems much more reliable.

In the city, especially when walking underneath overhead tram/train power lines, my AirPods glitch and stutter all the time on my iPhone 7 Plus. This can always be consistently reproduced. My friends owning AirPods have the same issues at the same locations.

The problem can be solved (well, it's more of a workaround) by disabling 4G/LTE and running the iPhone on 3G only. Absolutely no glitches then.

It must be some combined interference issues. Good luck figuring that one out, Apple. I guess we'll have to keep them like that and hope the 2nd gen will make it better.

Broke my record today....27m away from phone was where the cutting out ceased & stable streaming returned.

Stepped it out...

Cannot wrap my head around it but each and every android smartphone I own outputs volume much louder from the Airpods.

There must be some limitation within iPhones, every android I own cannot possibly have sound output levels that much higher.

Thinking Apple needs to look into this issue. Perhaps it is a software problem. Obviously airpods have a big enough drivers as evidenced by output volume from androids.

That might be them trying to preserve claimed battery run times. Higher volumes result in shorter battery life.

Looks like 10.3b3 corrects full volume alerts. So far from testing today, alert volume levels are in line with lightning earpods.
