Cannot wrap my head around it but each and every android smartphone I own outputs volume much louder from the Airpods.

There must be some limitation within iPhones, every android I own cannot possibly have sound output levels that much higher.

Thinking Apple needs to look into this issue. Perhaps it is a software problem. Obviously airpods have a big enough drivers as evidenced by output volume from androids.

By any chance does your iOS device have Volume limit and/or sound check toggled on in the Music settings control panel?

Question about music sound quality:
I tried them on at the Apple Store and paired them with my phone. I tested them out with my music and they just didn't sound very good. The PowerBeats 3 I already own sounded better.

The question is, do you think the pair that Apple allows us to test out were bad? Curious to see opinions on the sound quality.

No it does not for either, I am ready to open a ticket with Apple to get to the bottom of this.

That might be them trying to preserve claimed battery run times. Higher volumes result in shorter battery life.

Could be. Easy enough though to get a quick charge with these and who listens long enough to drain their batteries in the Airpods, I listen more than most and that would be hard to do for me.

Do you have soundcheck enabled

I usually listen to MSNBC on my iPhone with my Airpods. I get the usually static and stutters as most have reported. Until today. Not a single stutter, no static. Just perfect sound.

There is a setting under Accessibility that allows you to change the volume balance between left and right channels. Is this set to be equal on both ears?
yes, it is. I noticed this on my mac too. When using air pods.

They sound much better with my android smartphones cause the iPhones cannot drive them efficiently. I have checked to make sure something is not enabled in the settings on the iPhone that would inhibit volume and there is not.

Now if there is some addition I could make for sound isolation (foam or something), I would be more inclined to keep them.

Today I opened my Airpods case and this error popped up on the iPhone display:

THIS ACCESSORY IS NOT SUPPORTED BY THIS IPHONE

First time I've seen it. They still work... anyone else received this error? I'm curious.

Listening to my AirPods now as I picked them up via my local Apple Store. I'm no audiophile, but the AirPods sound a tad better than the EarPods IMO. I love how as soon as I opened the case, they connected to my phone. They do a look a bit odd in my ears since I'm used to seeing a cord, but I'll get over that with time. Fortunately they fit comfortably in my ear.

My left airpod always has more battery life than the right one; right always dies first. Sometimes they're off by 15-20% and at other times it's only 5%, but it seems to happen pretty consistently starting from a full charge in both. Anyone else experiencing this?

In the city, especially when walking underneath overhead tram/train power lines, my AirPods glitch and stutter all the time on my iPhone 7 Plus. This can always be consistently reproduced. My friends owning AirPods have the same issues at the same locations.

The problem can be solved (well, it's more of a workaround) by disabling 4G/LTE and running the iPhone on 3G only. Absolutely no glitches then.

It must be some combined interference issues. Good luck figuring that one out, Apple. I guess we'll have to keep them like that and hope the 2nd gen will make it better.

FYI, iOS 10.3b3 completely fixed this issue for me. Zero glitches now, the AirPods are absolutely perfect with this version.

I leave my microphone settings on automatic, it always defaults to the right one. Maybe that's got something to do with it?

Yep, thought it might be that, but checked the setting and it's set to "Automatic" :'(

So I got another set of AirPods and the case is the same, slight play in it. Nothing major. 'Case closed'

I had my first issue with my Airpods this week and it was similar to this but it was my left airpod that died and the right one had more than 50% remaining. I placed them back in the case and charged everything until it hit 100% and I have not had that issue again. Not going to lie it kind of freaked me out that I thought I had a problem but it has seemed to go away. I did a factory reset just in case.

UPDATE: It happened again yesterday at the gym. The case was plugged in almost all night so I didn't think about it not being ready for the gym. Died 30 minutes (the left one again). got home and the right one was at 90% but the left one dead. Chatted with Apple they thought it was a hardware issue and scheduled an appointment for today. At the Apple store the left one was showing less battery than the right so they decided to trade it out. Then as we were trying to pair them we were having more issues so she decided to swap out the case. Once the new case was ready to pair, it worked as it was supposed to, quick and simple. All in all Apple replaced the left Airpod and the case. All under warranty. Another reason why I do like Apple, if it is under warranty and shows to be a hardware issue they are good about replacing it. This has been my experience.

Anyone else notice a slight gap between the top of the ear piece and the other side? It almost looks like a perfect seal didn't happen with the glue. Not sure if I should be concerned about that.

Edit: realized that the pieces aren't perfectly aligned. Does everyone's AirPods show a slight deviance with this or are they perfectly aligned. Not sure if I want to deal with replacing them or not, if all of them have this slightly.

Do your Airpods easily get dislodged after they're bumped ? Mine have fallen to the ground a few times, even after just having my arm bump the Airpods ..was using it while on the stationary bike.

EarSkinz are the answer to your problem. Some slight issues until the new ES3 are released in the coming weeks regarding the sensors, but I use them because I had the same problem as you highlighted. They grip. Improve the sound quality and are really easy to apply.

Do these fit inside the AirPods case? If not, I can imagine the PIA it must be put on and remove each time you listen.
