Just thinking about potential new taps in firmware updates, I wonder if a tap-hold action could be added? If so, it may prevent the need for a cumbersome (to some) triple-tap for skip tracking/volume adjustment.

Although triple-tap wouldn't concern me that much - extra functions gained would be worth it imo.

I doubt it. I actually think what we perceive as a tap is not a true touch input but an activation of the accelerometer. The tapping motion activates the accelerometer which translates the action assigned.

indeed, tap and hold would not be feasible, all it can detect it acceleration, and when held there's no acceleration.

just think if you could glide or slide a finder up or down the stem for volume or song changes...would that initiate the accelerometer?

No. That would require a specific sensor area along the stem. Might want to stop reaching here and come to the conclusion that the current gen AirPods capability are specifically related to taps to initiate the motion sensor.

A lotta people talk about the AirPods battery life, but nobody talks about how it affects the battery life of the phone. It is any worse than using wired headphones? Can anyone chime in?

My AirPods have been working great since I got them two months ago, however something odd occurred that I'm curious if anyone else has had happen. I was standing near the microwave and the left AirPod suddenly had static interference for a split second until I left the room the microwave was in. Has that happened to anyone else?

Ive noticed a dip in my daily battery life...charging a little bit more every since acquiring them. I generally use my Aiprods in the morning while at home doing cardio or weightlifting and on the way home from work. So no more than 2-3 hours tops a day. I charge them after use in the morning alongside my phone as well. I mid evening at work I usually find my battery in the 30-40% range now as opposed to the 60-70% range.

I think it's the fact that there are three more additional bluetooth connections to my iPhone in addition to my Apple Watch. Maybe it's the W1 chip? Maybe this is normal?

I have to take my Airpods back for what I presume will be an exchange. Only had them 3 weeks so far but this AM the right bud showed 0 charge while the left was at 100 and case around 80. Could not get it to charge the right bud at all today. Went online with support but that was no help. Oddly after i booked an appointment to exchange them the right bud showed nearly a full charge but when I put them in only the left one plays any sound.

Just had a call that went for 1h27m.

Airpods went down to 14%.
IPhone 6s went down to 89%.

Yeah, which makes sense as Apple claim:
  • AirPods (single charge): Up to 5 hours listening time, Up to 2 hours talk time.
...& that's with 50% volume.

Just double-checked what my volume was during the call: 79%.
Thanks, just impulse purchased these and still learning!

Thanks for the replies guys. This is weird because on the apple website, the iPhone 7 is rated at 50 hours of WIRELESS audio. I'm assuming that's Bluetooth. The iPhone 6s is rated at 50 hours of audio too. Note that it does not say wireless. So, I was expecting both to be the same

It's probably wireless audio at a certain bitrate and likely if you're not streaming audio from online - Apple Music, Spotify, Google Play Music, etc. Also, I would guess that is the case if you're only listening to music - no calls or games - and that too not skipping frequently.

I have a problem with Siri and the Airpods. I usually have my phone in the front pocket and I put the AirPods in, activate Siri with a double tap and say "Play beats 1". Sure it works but the screen turns on! So some time later I have a hot phone with no battery in my pocket. Is this intended behavior? I thought the phone had a proximity sensor for these situations? The screen doesn't turn on when I use the watch..

I am getting mine tomorrow. What is the audio quality, based on your opinion? How would you rate it, compared to the EarPods? :)

I have not used EarPods for more than one song a few years ago.m but I got the AirPods at the weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the audio.

My expectations weren't that high if I'm honest and they have far exceeded them.

For me, they're clearly more defined than the Earpods, in just about every aspect (definitely bass). I've used the Earpods for years & noticed the difference as soon as I plugged in the Airpods.

Has anyone had issues with one side not charging in the case? I've had mine since launch week day 3, and twice in the past week, the right AirPod is dead at the end of the workday (after sitting in the case post-commute all day long). I hear the metallic "click" when it snaps into the case in the morning and I see the charging light going on, but I'm starting to worry about this right AirPod.

My only other annoyance with the AirPods is I can't seem to get that AirPod "dialog" to pop up on iOS very often, which means I can't tell what the individual AirPods battery is at. Maybe once every four or five case opens (and I open the case RIGHT next to my iPhone), do I get the dialog to see battery life.

I never get the pop up quickly. It alway takes like 10 seconds. Definitely not as advertised.

Glad its not just me who very rarely gets the pop-up on-screen - seems strange though as that seems to be a very basic and core feature.

Weeks down the line, I still feel the same about these. If they did a proper in-ear version with an alternative control setup (or better Siri) I'd pay twice the price for them.
