Hi all. I bought a pair of AirPods Pro from Verizon last week on sale.

If I experience this rattling down the road, do I have to deal with Verizon or Apple? If Verizon, does anyone have experience with this? Regarding exchanges and such?

Thanks.

When my Verizon bought APP developed a rattle in the left earphone, I went straight to Apple. I ultimately got it replaced at a local Best Buy (which Apple told me about), because all the Apple Stores were closed at that point. Best Buy is an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

I think if your AirPods develop a rattle in the first 14 days, you can just return/exchange to Verizon and after that you're dealing with Apple or an AASP.

Does BB give you new ones or refurbished? And they have them on hand so you can exchange immediately?

Here in Portugal we don’t have an Apple Store so I had to left mine with a “premium” authorized by Apple. 5 days now and no sign of solution and no AirPods ?

Got the runaround from an Apple advisor today via chat support. They wanted me to use an AppleCare incident to have the AirPods "repaired."

I pointed out that I didn't break or damage the Airpods. But they said only an Apple "technician" could come to that conclusion.

I am just now reading this.

I just bought my first pair of AirPods Pro. Didn't want to as I own PowerBeats Pro, but after seeing the spacial sound demo I wanted this feature.

My AirPods just got shipped from China. Hope the hardware issue has been fixed.

I never buy AppleCare. Never have needed it. However, for $30, I may just buy it this time knowing these hardware issues exist. I am just hoping Apple has caught on and their most recently manufactured AirPods have been fixed.

My replacement AirPods are in the post from Apple. I hope that if these ones start to rattle again, there will be a repair programme up and running...

I started to notice the rattle a couple of weeks ago, but I was trying to listen to a podcast whilst walking today in transparency mode and it was unbearable. It's gotten much worse.

The person on the phone seemed quite ready to initiate a hardware replacement. They didn't say directly, but it definitely felt like a problem they had heard about before.

Good to hear Apple replaced them. How long did you own the Airpods Pro before you heard the rattle? Do you have AppleCare?

Again, I am thinking of just spending $30 for AppleCare on these for peace-of-mind.

I spoke to chat support at Apple last week. Not knowing really how to articulate the issue, I ran through a series of diagnostics with them and they ultimately suggested I go into the Apple store. That was a non starter for me because of how long the lines are at the store here and how closely people are packed in those lines, so I wasn’t going to risk it.

The issue got worse for me, so I contacted Apple support Again, particularly after seeing this thread and realizing that the problem only occurred if transparency or anc mode were on. This second time, they promptly sent me a replacement left AirPod, which Im now using and all is fine again.

I had the AirPods Pro for about 7 months before the issue started to appear, so we’ll see how long these last.

They weren't quite launch day, but I bought them within a couple of weeks of release. November 2019-ish. I've used them probably on average an hour a day (sometimes a lot more, sometimes not at all) and started hearing the rattle in May/June this year.

I don't have AppleCare as I'm fairly confident in the UK consumer laws - I've had multiple out of warranty Apple products replaced free of charge even after my AppleCare expired. If I were living in a country without those, however, I'd definitely get the AppleCare. I reckon there's a high chance a repair programme will be started once more people own them for longer and develop the fault if it is as widespread as it seems, but there's no guarantee.

Thanks. The best thing about AppleCare for Airpods is the price. $30 is nothing and I can sleep at night purchasing these.

Thanks again

I have already done it twice but as they are not replacing the keyboard with a non-butterfly one, it will keep failing after the program runs out.

Reminds me why I opted last year for a refurbished 2015 MBP 15” instead of the latest/greatest. These design flaws should never see the light of day. Yet here we are. For these issues to be problems is one thing…however, coming from the richest company in the world makes me wonder how these products and related features are not flagged in the first place during development/testing. You better get that AppleCare...:D

Although, so far they have replaced all of mine under warranty since its not user-caused damage

Replacement buds arrived today... not great that the problem occurred, but I can't argue with a 24 hour turnaround for a replacement during a pandemic. New ones sound fine! (For now...)

I'm back for a second round I guess...

My replacement pair from April have now started the rattle in the left one. So my first pair lasted about 3 months, and these ones 2.5

Oddly enough - over the past 2 weeks on two occasions the left one refused to charge. I would take them out one day and the left was completely dead while the right one was 100%

Anyways from out of nowhere today (I use them multiple times every day) put them in and within a few steps can hear it in the left - just like my first pair.

They just swapped them for a new pair last time in-store so guess I'll have to go do that again ugh....

This is a very helpful post, thanks. I had been having these issues for a month and finally got around to contacting apple On Friday who mailed me a replacement pair with minimal fuss. So theyre clearly aware of the issue.
hopefully these new ones Which arrived today don’t develop the same issue.

Had the same issue as everyone on here with the rattle, slight rattle on the right, really bad on the left. I was getting a weird high pitched squeal in the left one every time I adjusted it in my ear and phone calls were traumatic left EarPods would kick out a high pitched squeal when the other end was ringing and hi frequency sounds on calls / music would make the left one squeal. Also the ear tip test failed every time. Took them to the apple store today and they tried them with another iPhone which had the same issues and the questions they were asking were all pointed to the issues mentioned I.E. when did this first begin happening, is it worse outside, is it only with ANC / transparency is turned on, and interestingly enough has the quality of the bass dropped? which might explain that firmware updates had nothing to do with affecting the bass response but it was actually the fault of the hardware degrading over time. anyhoo they've replaced both AirPods and all the issues have gone ? just wondering for how long though and if these ones go the same road will they replace them within a year of this replacement or will that only last until it's a year since I bought the original ones. It's clear from the question asked today that this is a common hardware defect and Apple should look to resolve the fault and offer a replacement program similar to the iPhone 6 battery.

My left pod would make a crackling sound when I was running. Called support on Wednesday, and got the replacement yesterday. Took a while to get it to pair up with the right, but after reading online to make sure the new one has the correct firmware, all seems good now.

This has got to be some cruel joke; I got my replacement right airpod (cos the service center decided that's the one that needed repairing) and now the left one is popping and cracking... this is really maddening.

EDIT: Just to give some context; I got the replacement unit yesterday; and just today I'm back at the repair center for the other one.

...and try it without the ear tips. interestingly, it was much worse without the eartips.

Same for me when testing it during the phone call with support.

Question. Is everyone returning the extra silicone tips or keeping them? The diagram on how to pack the AirPod for return shows it with a tip on it, but I was thinking they wouldn’t want me to send it back with a tip on it. Yes or no?

I've kept all my tips even though I don't use them.

Yes, I’ve experienced ratteling in my right AirPod pro. Apple quickly sent me a replacement while putting a $99 hold on my credit card until I sent in the faulty one.

I've been using other brand TWS for a while, and went back to AirPods Pro today and noticed the crackling a few minutes ago. If I open my mouth the crackling goes away, but if I close my jaw it comes back, almost like when the pressure in my ear canal increases as I close my jaw so does the crackling.
[automerge]1593902015[/automerge]

If I turn off transparency or ANC modes the crackling goes away.

But with those modes turned on I can just be sitting here not moving and a regularly irregular clicking sound in the left ear, until I open my mouth and it goes away. I don't have to move to hear it, but with my mouth slack jawed I can move my head around and I don't hear it. It only happens when my jaw is mostly closed or closed all the way shut.

EDIT - it's my heart beat? When I close my jaw I can hear my heart beat and the quiet clicks march along with my heart beat for the most part, sometimes inserting an extra click here and there.

EDIT 2 - if I sing or hum to my dog in a low voice I get a metallic rattling in the left earpiece.

1) It’s a known defect
2) Get it replaced

FYI this is most likely grime or dust getting stuck in the ANC microphone(s).

I took my APP to the Apple Store today because they got so bad that anytime I talked with transparency mode on both earpieces would feed my voice back into the earpiece with it sounding like I was a robot, or talking through a Kazoo or had a piece of tinfoil stretched over a comb in front of my mouth (I'm dating myself there). I called Apple and they sent me a link to get an appointment, but I could not make an AirPods Pro appointment via the support app, so I went in.

This was my first trip out of the house to go to a store in ages, armed N95 mask, Clorox wipes, and sanitizer - all that I've had for ages due to my lung disease. I know, stupid to leave the house. I waited 3 hours for my appointment, much of it outside with 95 degree heat and a non-functioning left lung, trying to suck air thru a mask; so I had to go to Best Buy and the grocery store to get out of the heat while trying to avoid getting CoVid-19.

Once I got in I explained everything and mentioned this thread and the other on macrumors.com, and demonstrated that the issue didn't happen with their demo set + my tips; when I got the robot voice hear-thru that triggered my ASMR reflex it made me shiver and yank them out of my ears in front of them.

The "Genius" admitted it sounded like both sides were bad, but tried to tell me that a single bad one could make both act up, and since the left was worse that I should try that first. He gave me a story about how they treat each ear earpiece plus the case as 3 separate pieces, and can only do one exchange at a time. They wanted to replace just the left earpiece. I wasn't having it. With the left earpiece out and the music paused the right one still acted up.

I told them I'm too high risk to do this all over again, that I live on the farthest other end of town, and I'm going out of state next week for my daughter's birthday (she is self isolating too), and that I simply could not return in the next day or two and go through all of this over again and be exposed more just to get the other earpiece replaced (I was happy to keep my battery pack). I kindly asked for the manager.

He went to get her but came back 5 minutes later with a new sealed AirPods and no manager, and he did a "late exchange" for the entire thing, including another 2 years of Apple Care. I had brought in my box, unused charge cable, and unused tips, of which they kept all but the tips that I had actually used, and have me a new sealed package with a new 2 yr apple care warranty.

I thanked them profusely and told everyone to stay safe and went home very happy.

So far they are acting fine, but they're still on firmware 2D15. I know that when I put them in the case and charge the case that it will likely update to 2D27, and hope that wont cause any new issues. But my old ones on 2D27 sounded a little warmer and fuller, more solid. I'm still worried that I didn't have the "clicking" and the "buzzing/rattle" until after 2D27 was applied.

EDIT - The clicking is totally gone with the new set, and so is the rattle. Also, they did update to 2D27 and I do think that the bass increased again, like it did when my first set updated recently (my first set was from Nov 2019). I also think that the ANC got quieter with 2D27.

I actually feel the ANC "suck" again, felt best after dropping from transparency mode to passive noise blocking and then down to ANC. I can tell I have a great seal and passive isolation with the active modes off, and then when I go to ANC mode from there and vacuum sensation is real, like it was when I received my first pair last November.

With 2D27 the sound is much better with the active modes off, where before it was more bland and basic sounding with just passive noise mode and now they seem more powerful and punchy without having to use transparency or ANC mode to get that EQ-like punch.

I'd recommend just doing online chat with Apple support next time. My two interactions with them for this problem have been fast and easy, and I had a replacement sent via Fedex next-day air to my door in both cases.
