From my experience three pairs into this saga. It now seems to have dropping them in common. Even a small drop onto carpet can lead to this. This tends to make me think that parts inside are not as secure as they should be. I am not talking about drops from huge heights or violent drops in any way. I had one pair go wrong, received a replacement that was fine for about 2 months and then once dropped started the rattle. They were replaced and the third pair was fine until I literally dropped them off a coffee table onto a rug. Same thing immediately happened.

I don't know if the symptoms of mine are the same as others, but what happens for me is that they only rattle in certain situations. If wearing them and I clear my throat, I can feel it vibrate in my ear. Despite this, I can play music really loud and it doesn't rattle. Only with certain frequencies, phone calls etc

Turn off Transparency mode and Noise Cancellation mode (BOTH off). If it doesn't happen anymore with both turned off, then its a problem with one or more of the mics. If it still does it, then its probably something that has broken loose.

Thanks for the reply. I did all that, the issue remained. It was the same with each set. That technique was one that apple suggested also.

How are you wearing them? Try some of the cheap foam tips if they drop out of your ears. I found that the regular tips I had drops but with the mem foam tips they are in there like glue.

The dropping was usually when I was taking them out or putting them back into the case. They do not fall out of my ears

To add to the discussion, I also experienced exactly the same symptoms in my pair of AirPods Pro: annoying crackling sound when ANC or Transparency switched on and any jaw / head / body movement. The left earbud was most affected, and the right sounded more dull / thick when walking.

I bought them in early Jan 2020, in the first few releases following the Christmas sellout. I did not buy Applecare+. Saw the first issues manifest around April and by early June it was pretty unbearable.

Apple support were happy to replace them for free via mail and return. (Tri-state area). They just placed an $89+tax hold on my credit card per earbud.

Naturally I suspect a hardware fault with the mic(s) used for noise cancelling and it's a bit annoying to think that potentially all APP are affected - who knows when I'll have to call Apple again. If this is sufficiently widespread maybe they'll start offering an official repair program.

I bought a pair the other day from very.com because I get 10% discount but I haven't opened them yet. I am thinking if I should return them and get something else considering how many problems they seem to have. Very.com don't allow you to return them just for not liking them, you can only return if faulty therefore I have to think before opening them.

its a shame because for that price, the AirPods pro should be pretty flawless. What other ear buds for that price are worth it.

Has anyone noticed a change in the rattle after updating to the new firmware that came out this week? I'm curious if Apple has implemented a software workaround for what seems to be a hardware issue.

I just had both my left and right replaced last week; the right side rattled, and neither would complete the fit calibration successfully with any of the ear tips (even though when I first got the airpods I could complete the test with both medium and large). Replacement airpods fixed the rattle and the calibration completed successfully.

How widespread do you guys and girls think this issue is?

Let's assume Apple has sold tens of millions of Airpods Pros so far (and counting..). This thread has 159 posts, reddit has some (hundreds), other forums also. Let's assume only 5 % with the problem will write about it online. So:
  • 20 million sold
  • 2000 posts * 20 (5 %) = 40 000 with crackling problem
    • That comes down to 0,2 % has the problem
  • With 10 000 posts the percentage is 1 %, with 100 000 posts the percentage is 10 %. And so on
If the percentage is 1 %, there are 200 000 affected devices, with 10 % 2 000 000 devices and so on. While 2 000 000 sounds alot, there are still 18 000 000 without the problem.

I'm just calculating because I don't have the issue and wondering what are the chances it will hit mine :)

Thanks for your input. So if nobody has no idea (facts), nobody should not make any assumptions? Okay then :D

I've unfortunately just started noticing this on my right AirPod today. It's very annoying when walking, only happens when noise cancelling or transparency mode is on. I presume the only current fix is a replacement? Will wait until my AirPods update to the new firmware first before calling Apple.

The firmware update wint fix the problem, why wait?

Same problem as in the OP. It's been there for 2-3 months. Finally got a replacement.

With mismatched firmware. I love this thing but this is maddening.

Wow, I'm so glad I came across this! I also definitely thought it was just me. Late to the game but I haven't worn my Airpods for a few months since I use them outside when I go running and haven't been doing that lately (due to covid).

It sounded like a loose microphone when I go running, which was completely maddening! Haven't replaced mine yet and I have Applecare+ on it - I might see what this latest firmware does but if it doesn't fix it, I'll get a replacement. It only happen with my right Airpod but not my left...

i gotta say; I’m on my second visit to Apple (this time is an authorized repair center) since the two stores here are shut down still due to COVID. The same popping and cracking sound and now in both ears. I do believe it’s a hardware issue but it’s funny how it develops in one ear more frequently than in both. I just returned from dropping them so god knows what they will check and I do hope they send a new pair soon. I can’t wait to try spatial audio and a popping mic will surely ruin the experience

While I don’t think we have any idea what the real numbers are, my suspicion is that it is extremely high - basically it will happen to all of them at some point unless Apple changes something about the design. I also suspect that for a large number of typical owners, they will never notice the issue as it’s not that noticeable when you are listening to audio content.

May I ask: What makes you think the majority wouldn't notice? My impression from this thread was, it occurs all the time, no matter what you are listening to? Or is it just in between titles when it is silence?

I've had two pairs start doing this, and in both cases it was really only noticeable when ANC or transparency modes were on and no music was playing. I happen to wear them like this a lot, so immediately picked up on it. Perhaps it would have gotten much worse/more noticeable had I not gotten them replaced so quickly, but from what I've experienced the noise was not really audible above any music playing.

For me it’s very notable, even if I turn my head you can hear the popping sound. I wear mine a lot and I’m on a second repair visit for the same issue. What’s weird it’s that it seems it happens far more often in only one of them and not both at the same time.

My launch-day AirPods Pro started doing this several months ago, but I didn't use them much during the lockdown, so I kind of forgot about it. But a couple of weeks ago I started noticing that they were popping/crackling not just when I was walking, but even due to the vibrations on a bus or train. So I called Apple and requested replacements. The day before the new ones arrived, my AirPods updated to firmware 2D27, which increased the bass response for LF bass (20-80Hz) ... then I discovered that they were crackling/popping during bass-heavy tracks, even when I was completely stationary. Lol

Needless to say, the replacement pods are vastly better. I wonder how long it'll be until these start going bad as well?

For me, it took about 5 months, (of fairly heavy use) for the replacements to start popping again

Hi all. I bought a pair of AirPods Pro from Verizon last week on sale.

If I experience this rattling down the road, do I have to deal with Verizon or Apple? If Verizon, does anyone have experience with this? Regarding exchanges and such?

Thanks.
