Well done for sticking with it instead of the normal apple bashing rubbish.

Thanks.

It's not looking good though-the Sharing icon on the left has vanished and I still don't have an AirPlay icon (it is still importing cover art, so that may change once that's finished).

You hopefully should get the option to enable it in the iTunes prefs.

If not at least. We've narrowed it down to your pc

Well...

When I click Advanced>Turn on Home Sharing, the "Shared" icon vanishes.

I think a format and reinstall is in order...

It will do I think, turn on your laptop and load iTunes. If the laptop library is shared it should show.

Still now remote speakers in the bottom right corner?

The weird thing is, on my laptop (wired currently), I'm not signed in to anything in iTunes.

Home Sharing is not turned on and I haven't signed in to my iTunes account, yet the Airplay icon is present.

No.

[Edit] - Where are the iPhone and iPad backups stored?

I'll save those and wipe the drive and start again.

Something is clearly not right.

I've got my W7 install on a USB flash drive, so installation will only take about 20 mins (+ updates).

Sorry I am all out of ideas. All I can think of it is
- it's something about the Thompson modem/router

+1

In my experience with AirPlay I have found that some routers don't allow the protocol that Apple uses to be passed between the wireless and wired parts of the network (even though they are on the same subnet).

I would consider getting the AExtreme and turning the wireless off on your O2 Wireless Box IV. You could also look into getting some specific support for your router from your ISP, they may have some advice.

Hey Azzin, are you the same Azzin that was having trouble with iTunes on the AVzforum back in the summer? I'm with the guy above who said it's maybe some weirdness with the router, but I see you've had a new one since. I don't think reinstalling the os is gonna help, and it seems like an effort to try. Do you know anyone you can borrow a different router from? Ideally, an airport extreme!?

Hi mate, the thing with the router is that my Wife's Ethernet laptop works absolutely fine.

Hers is a newly built W7 install and my laptop also works over Ethernet (although the build is a good few months old, I only put iTunes on that 2 days ago).

So it definitely works over Ethernet, which pretty much rules out the router and narrows in my PC!

Right then!

I'm logged back on to my freshly built W7 PC! ;)

It didn't take long, I actually first logged on about 25 minutes after starting the rebuild. ;)

Anyway, I'm just doing a few Windows Updates and I've just installed Microsoft Security Essentials (chose not to turn Windows firewall on during install).

I'm about to install iTunes fresh (without copying any of my backed up folders across, so we'll see if I get the AirPlay icon.

Wish me luck....

Slightly weird occurance....

I've just installed iTunes and as it did a first run, I got this:

Bonjour-1.png

Services.png

So I've cancelled iTunes and enabled it in Services:

Bonjour2.png

Just to update, I haven't turned anything on/off, or signed in to anything.

All I did was install iTunes, got that initial "No Bonjour" message, closed iTunes, changed Bonjour to "Automatic" in Services, re-started iTunes and there it was!

I can see my Wife's library too AND.......I have just fired up the Remote app on my iPad, searched for a library, got given a 4 digit pin and then my iPad appeared in my iTunes!!!

I clicked on it and it prompted me for a pin!!

I entered the pin and then got a message saying my iPad could now control my iTunes library!! :D

Congrats Azzin ......... now what to do for the rest of the week :)

I need to say a BIG thank you to you and everyone that contributed to this thread, I'm really grateful for the help. :p

[Edit] - What's the best process for copying over what folders to ensure I can continue to sync my iPad and iPhone?

I don't want to copy anything over that may cock it all up!

In Edit>Preferences>Advanced, it says that my "iTunes Media folder location" is C:\Users\Me\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media.

Now, my iTunes library is in D:\iTunes.

Should I change the "Media Folder Location to D:\iTunes, or just add the D:\iTunes folder by selecting File>Add folder to library?

Fantastic.

So do you think that something had automagically disabled bonjour all along, and that would've fixed it without a fresh install? Something for others to check immediately without reading our other 239 posts :)

As for the music, should be just files so I dont think it will bugger anything up. Whichever place is easiest for you really.

I would keep it on a seperate partition to the the OS. mine is on a DROBO exteranl drive, and make regular backups.

No, that was something I had already checked and it was running, so I really have no idea!

What should I have showing in Edit>Preferences>Advanced though?

The default "C:\Users\Me\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media" path, or change it to D:\iTunes?

Thanks again.

I started with just music but now have over 380 movies, countless TV episodes, apps and backups. A good statergy, planned early can save heartbreak, time and money in the long game.

The intial problem was the netork/airport express setup. Once this was rectified the problem with iTunes/Bonjour was found, and then only after trying a seperate pc connetected by ethernet.

so summary, 2 seperate issues that had a direct inpact, causing a difficult and protracted fault diagnosis.

To prevent further issues buy apple lol, you know it makes sense.

Right.....

I've just rebooted after a shedload of Windows updates and look what popped up when I started iTunes....

Bonjour-1.png

So I closed iTunes, restarted the service, opened iTunes and all was well again.

It was set to "Automatic", but I had to click "Start".

I turned the Windows firewall off in all profiles (Domain/Private/Public), restarted the PC, restarted iTunes and all is well again.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to configure this goddam Windows Firewall?

Wow. That's great news. My next suggestion was to give the wife the PC and you use the notebook :D

For Bonjour, check the event log if it has issues.

For Firewall, if using MS Essentials I don't think you need to do anything. I didn't. But you may want to check google for Apple Ports that are used and maybe create a rule for Itunes ports to be open, both in and outbound.

You don't need too, it's just for wireless printing on a windows pc

Yes you do, iTunes uses it for zero-config detection of AirTunes speakers as well.

The installer is on the CD that comes with the Airport Express: I think it gets installed with iTunes as well (EDIT: I see from the above that that seems to be the case).

Azzin, just change the iTunes folder location in preferences to point at your existing folder on the D drive.

Glad to see you got it sorted!
