I'm not sure if that means that computers on a wired network using the same ip address range as the wireless one actually can't stream music to the AE, or whether it's just the way they've phrased it (assuming that all your clients will be wireless). Might be worth a quick call to Apple support to clarify that?

Thanks, but on my laptop (now wired), I have the AirPlay icon and can select "Living Room" (which is what I named the Airport Express speakers).

I just connected (using RDP) to my Wife's laptop and in her AirPlay icon it has an option of "Airport Express 1", which it obviously can't connect to....

Scrub that, I just unticked the options for remote speakers, closed iTunes, opened iTunes and reticked the options and it's there now.

So it's just my wired PC that refuses to have an AirPlay icon.

So the situation is:

  • I can select "Living Room" from the AirPlay icon in iTunes on my wired laptop.
  • I don't have the AirPlay icon in iTunes on my wired desktop.

windows does that pop block thing.

I think we have found that you have a problem with the settings on your wired pc.

I would check itunes versions and re-check your wired pc for firewall.

Try enabling UPnP (they call it "network discovery") in the network settings on your Windows 7 desktop (if it isn't already), reboot it and try again.

EDIT - you do have the Windows Bonjour client installed on the desktop PC, don't you? If not it won't see the airtunes speakers... It's on the Airport Utility CD.

Just checked against my laptop and Wife's laptop and we're all running iTunes 10.1.2.17.

Where's that (Services?)

Checking now.

Thanks guys, we're nearly there!! :D

Control panel, network, then it's one of the options in the sidebar on the left (Change network settings, change advanced network settings or something like that - sorry, don't have a win7 PC to look at right now!).

Aha!

In Services, UPnP was set to "Manual".

So I stopped it, went in to Properties, set it to "Automatic" and restarted the service.

Found it in Network & Sharing Centre, but it is already turned on.

At least you have isolated the problem now to your PC. Good advice to get the notebook wired and working. So close....!

appple doesn't support upnp.

Windows does use it a lot though, I wasn't sure whether iTunes on Windows uses it or just uses Bonjour so I thought it was worth a shot. We're running out of ideas here anyway. :)

I second the "reboot everything" suggestion: worth a try anyway!

We are all running Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit, it's just my PC that has the issue.
Did you choose 64 bit iTunes or use 32 bit? I had a customer the other day that used the wrong version of our software.

I use Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and it works fine.

Yes, you can't install the 32 Bit anyway, it tells you when you try to run it.

It seems fine on my laptop and my Wife's laptop too (both wired!).

Can you do a "repair" on iTunes? Maybe re-install but I am not sure if iTunes keeps your libraries so it would be worth backing up before you do it. Or at least google apple site for re-install methods.

if you enable home sharing on the wired pc does the library show up as shared in either your s or your wifes laptop?

I've just downloaded the 64 Bit exe, so I'll reinstall it now.

How do you mean?

There's Library Sharing and Home Sharing.

if you select home sharing you will be prompted to enter your apple id and password, this will then make you main library available by all itunes clients on your network.

I use this to watch movies on my ipad.
