This an an overall perspective.
- The number of devices that Apple sells is huge and the mountain of potential waste in unused chargers, cables, earphones and packaging is equally huge. Smartphones/devices have been around for a long time now and many people, owning multiple devices, already have multiple chargers, etc.
- We are consuming our natural resources at an incredible rate and are polluting our environment increasingly through our manufacture and by the waste we create. We do not have infinite resources, nor do we have a perfect means of disposing of our waste.
- Considering the above, a decision on whether to include these items with new devices is ripe for the making. Some people will be inconvenienced - in addition to an expensive smartphone, they will need to purchase an extra brick. Not great, but at least they have been discounted. Consider the other group now, those with existing accessories. Consider the savings all around that results by eliminating these items in the packaging. The gear effect is huge considering the iPhone sales volume - ±218m in 2018 alone. Let’s assume half of people already have accessories: that’s a saving of 109m bricks and earphones in a single year. That is huge.
- For many years now, many counties have required that plastic shopping bags are purchased. This, with the aim of discouraging waste and more responsibility on the part of the shopper. This results is less waste all around. Just look at how many people shop with their own re-usable shopping (purchased separately) - the introduction of a charge has had a positive effect (must be the anode
), making people more aware and making them more responsible. So maybe a similar approach is warranted in other parts of our lives and products we buy.
Why did Apple make the change?
- You’d probably find that Apple has been chewing on this for a while, and found this year a great time to make the change, for three reasons:
- 5G is expensive (amongst other items) and they needed to find an effective way to reduce overall costs.
- All the above points about waste, existing accessories, etc.
- Their environmental goals.
- The change is therefore a logical and effective solution to both problems - and it is a gift that keeps on giving with each device delivered.
For the two parties then:
- People with existing accessories: great, less of what you don’t need anyway!
- People without: it’s a bummer you have a spend a little more...don’t give them away! But, you are making a small sacrifice that helps us all - thank you.
In short then, I believe we all need to be a little more responsible about what we consume and how much waste we create. This is a good step in right direction.
