Well the box for my iPhone 12 is in the top of my wardrobe with the cable unpacked inside. I doubt i’ll ever use it as I don’t have a connector that fits. Seems a waste but they’ll be millions like me no doubt.

A cable uses fewer earth resources than a plastic plug with circuitry etc and is a lot easier to produce. And I think quite a few will be using the USB C cable to charge from their macs/macbooks or other smart tech that people have added to their homes.

There will be millions like me who will not use it too. Maybe by the next generation when USB-C is more widely visible on other devices and consumer goods. My wife uses Macs but I don’t as they aren’t capable for my job. Everybody I’ve spoken to who has upgraded has said the same thing about the cable, seems a bit pointless at this point unless of course Apple used it to encourage sales of their 20W plugs. Then again that would contradict their environmental message so I doubt that was their agenda. It must just be a take it or leave it addition to the release.

Read countless posts on here and Reddit from people defending Apple's potential move of not including the power adapter with the 2020 iPhones because they had plenty of them lying around at home already. And yet not a word from anyone now that we know the new iPhones will ship with a USB-C Lightning cable that is incompatible with all previously included iPhone power adapters (except iPhone 11 Pro and Max).
That's because you do not need to buy one, you can use your old lightening cable and charger. You only need to if you want to use the USB-C for fast charging.

How is the new phone usb-c. Doesn’t it have the same lightning port as previous phones. It’s the cable that has one end usb-c to plug into a usb-c ported power adapter. All my two dozen power adapters that have usb connectors work fine with new phone As the cable ends that plug into phone are lightning. Except for the several real old cables that have the original huge connector.

Why not complain the phone does not come with a case, car mount, desk pedestal, screen protector. After all a $1499 phone should have all these items for that kind of price. All this still begs the question, what am I going to do with all the power adapters I already own? None have ever gone bad, and I can only use but one at a time. Scratches head.........

Charging the phone is a requirement of operation. It isn’t the same as a case. This phone ships with a cable most people won’t be able to use. It’s uncommon, and it’s a mild inconvenience. It isn’t like I’ve pulled out my torch and pitchfork. I just paid the $60 so I could have 3 new usb-c bricks. I don’t think it would have been out of bounds to expect to only need to buy one for the MagSafe charger.

The cable that came with my 12 will probably never get taken out of the box.
i might throw it in the garbage to show Apple’s decision was bad for the environment. 😂😂 They gave me something i cannot even utilize.

Disprove it and then what? They do not care what you do after spending your money on them. Just give the cable to someone else.

you quoted me while I was editing my post. 🤣
When millions people follow my movement called “Not everyone has usb c brick. You gave me a useless cable, Apple!” And throw the cable in the garbage, it will get on the news. And it will get publicity. 🤣🤣

Hahaha. I may join you then if I get a 12PM!

It’s no different than my last couple iPhones. Recently cleaned my office and found a couple lightning cables still wrapped up in the box of my old phones. Never took them out as I have plenty of lightning cables already. I could use this usb-c cable with my usb-c dock in my office but would probably just use the wireless charger built into the desk lamp. I can use this cable to charge my phone from my iPad Pro, I guess. Haha 😂

Do people upgrade their iPhones every year? How are people ending up with so many unused lightening cables?

#1 - We don't upgrade every year.

#2 - My question is how anyone doesn't have extra Lightning cables. My wife's and my most recent three upgrades (6->7, 7->XS, 8->XR) were on trade-in deals where we didn't send in anything but the phone. We also have ipad minis and have lightning cables at a couple charge-points in the house for those. We also have some shorter lightning cables for travel kits and work bags. The things are inexpensive and don't wear out. (at least not for us; we take care of our stuff)

They probably don’t wear out because you have so many of them in the first place. Each person I know with one iPhone kept for a couple years has had to replace lightening cable. I guess it depends on how deep one is in the apple ecosystem.

Iphone 5s, iphone 6, iphone 6s, iphone 7, iphone xr, iphone xs max, 2 airpods 2nd gen, ipad 7th gen, 2 long aftermarket usb-a to lightning cables. I did buy for about 8 bucks a usb-c to lightning as my car has a usb-c port. The phones that were traded into Apple were phone only...kept the accessories.

I've been collecting them since the iP5. Still have the same one plugged in on my desk. Despite what the Entitled like to claim, they aren't particularly poorly made and last for years if you don't do stupid things like unplug them by yanking on the cable vs the plug.

Look at it this way. Every year 100 million people get new iPhones. Of those a few hundreds frequent these forums. Of those a few dozens need to complain about something. It happens like clockwork every year without fail. Now these complainers still will buy the new iPhone. They won’t return it. They will do it again next year, just like they did last year.

We all realize Apple will do something to allow these people to complain. They will complain. We will all read about it, make comments and the forum will be abuzz. Actually Apple did us all a favor this year, as not supplying a power brick, is far better than a bending phone, or non receiving antennas, or trump screens, errr mean yellow screens. So all in all not a bad year really.

Since I own Apple stock and I buy and use Apple products, I am in a quandary as to how I should feel about all this. As a user I can see the issue of leaving out the power adapter. As a person concerned about reducing garbage from electronics I see that side of it. As a stock holder I also see the benefit of saving millions in not supplying something the vast majority of people, like myself have dozens of laying around. So I’m not sure how I should feel about this issue.

Except to say it don’t amount to a hill of beans. As I have in past, did so now, and will keep buying in the future, the latest iPhone each year regardless. Now we have one more, gotta get my phone on launch day, issue to get past. Before we can start cycle all over again, speculating what next phone will include and obsessing over the first one percent loss of reported battery capacity.

Perhaps it is time to put up my double palm face picture again.

Good for the company, not so good for the consumers. Will it really affect things overall on the scale that they are? Unlikely. Does that change the part that it's still not that good for consumers (even if some might not really care about it)? Not really.

Nothing wrong with using an USB-A wireless charging pad or lighting cable. It just takes much longer to charge your iPhone like 3+ hours compare to only 45-60 minutes depending on ones battery size.

To be honest, it's not a big deal, I personally have 4 USB C chargers, plus a 20 watt USB c charger is like 14 bucks on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08G13M8LJ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2
It wouldn’t be a big deal to anybody if everybody already owned multiple USB-C adapters like yourself would it? It’s not a big deal to me either as I’ve got a wireless charger and a couple of USB-A chargers in the house already. I get the frustration of including a cable most will have to purchase something additionally to use though.

You then just use your existing charger and cable.

Worst case, people just go and buy an USB-C charger, gets Covid-19 and dies. Which would be even better for their carbon footprint.

Which is why I don’t get the lightening cable in the box.

It will increase the likelihood that those who needs to buy a charger will buy an USB-C charger. Apple doesn't want customers to be buying USB-A chargers anymore.

Also this cable can be used with a Mac, many PCs, some iPad chargers, most new Macbook chargers and other USB-C chargers.

1. If I sell my device or hand it down, I include the power adapter and cable.

2. My work has a 5W USB-A adapter. It no longer works with the USB-C/Lightning cable included with iPhone 12.

1. You don't have to include the adapter if you sell.
2. The 5W USB-A charger will still charge an iPhone 12.

Or, you can just buy a new charger and you kan keep that for 10 years during multiple iPhones.
