I thought it's been the best release in quite a while, it's nice to see Apple putting some actual engineering into making the phone lighter again (developing the Al-Ti welding), more comfortable to hold than the slab-sided design (ergonomics > looks), I was hoping they'd up photo resolution to 16MP with a 64MP sensor, but they've given us 24MP outputs alongside the full 48MP ones (12MP has long since become a limiting factor for detail in photos). I also much prefer the brushed finish of the Ti bands over the mirror finish of the stainless Pros. They also resisted pumping the price further, which is a big plus, I'd argue they could even have dropped the 128GB Pro, as it does limit some of the camera functionality, but they kept it around as a lower access point for those who mainly want the other Pro features, so that's pretty great as well.

And still the same crappy flat sides, ugh. I thought they would have upgraded at least the Pro models to the rounded sides.
11 Pro/PM edges were top of the line, perfectly grippy, super comfortable. Even more than 6-8. I guess I’ll miss them. Time goes on…

This is a good point. I wonder if there was a lot of behind the scenes stuff we don't know about. And of course, I'm sure next years changes were being worked on too.

Indeed. A new chip with maybe a third more transistors + many tens of thousands of engineering hours by teams with superb track records tell me that yes, there was a lot of behind the scenes stuff we don't know about.

IMO down the road if not immediately just the new hardware ray tracing alone will be a very big deal. Also down the road (but not immediately) the new presence of a Thread radio on board will likely add utility.

I think the base 15 series had better upgrades than the Pros this year.
Because they did. It sucks completely when they give exclusive features to the Max over the Pro. Some of us like a lighter, small phone with still all the top end specs and abilities. I’ll probably still get the pro because I’ve been wanting AOD, the dynamic island, and a lighter device than my 13 pro, but it was definitely disappointing if you’re coming from a 14 pro. I don’t want the 6.3 inches that is rumored for next year, either, so this year is my last if I still want the 6.1 form factor.

A think a telescope camera should be quite a major upgrade, if it can hit 10x optical. Other than that, better battery technology, and that is about it?
I predict a lot of AI / software stuff and VR integration. Besides that, minor camera upgrades. Battery seems to have levelled out. But basically these products are mature. It will stay like this for a looong while until we get wristband phones with holo-displays like in the movies.

Something I have thinking about for the far future is an "Apple Watch" that is way more powerful than todays iPhone, that streams everything to a portable and foldable display. You can buy different display sizes for different needs, iPad pro size down to pocket size - the hardware is in the watch. Powered by a not yet invented super duper small battery.

It's fun to speculate if you think "what tech will we look back to in 20 years and lol at how limited it was". Streaming data and battery comes to mind.

What "major" upgrade is even possible at this time?

Multi-element antenna with dynamic beam forming & steering (resulting in improved antenna gain)

6G when it becomes available

Display technology that could provide a reflective display (kinda like liquid paper display) on demand for improved visibility in bright sunlight while still providing an emissive (e.g.; OLED) display-without degrading current display resolution, brightness, color response

Vision Siri that could respond to gestures without touching the screen

I have been updating my pro yearly but this time it’s harder than ever to motivate. I never plug in my phone, I never play games. I was looking forward to the new lens but as the max is too big in my opinion this was also a let down. As I see it there’s no difference between my 14 pro and the 15 pro other than some smoother edges for my use case. This must be the smallest step ever in the yearly update for the regular pro model.
Physically, you are getting smoother edges, smaller bezels, lighter weight, and an action button.
Under the hood: You might not care about USB-C (and USB 3 transfer speeds), but you still get 2 GB more RAM, 10% faster CPU, 1 more GPU core, and WiFi 6E. Should make it quite a bit more performant.
What else, outside of more zoom, were you hoping for?

I'm a very tech-centric person, and this is the first year of upgrades that I'm officially like meh, I usually love upgrading my phone every 2 years, but to me there isn't much difference between the 13 pro and 15 pro. Not enough to warrant spending the $$

there's no difference. the only good thing that people will notice on the 15 pro is the weight and even that isn't important for many people

Well, next year will be worse, there isn’t much left for Apple to upgrade while they need to keep high profit ratio. Cpu? Already using 3nm tech so next year is also 3nm. Camera sensor is closed to 1 inch already.

there will be no cpu upgrades anymore it's over. 3nm is so small there's nothing left to do. expect 10% max every year at best

I caved, ordered a 15 Pro in blue. I know I said I wouldn't upgrade from the 13 Pro, but with the battery being nearly shot, and overheating at every turn, I think it's time for a new device. I held out past 14, so I might as well get this one. And hey, maybe that island would be useful.

If you think back to the days of the “s” releases, that’s what this is. This is the first year since the 3S pre order that I am not indulging. This feels like a copy and paste release and I’ll wait to see what comes out next year. I’d love to see more innovation than this.

Yes and also the camera sensor size is also at maximum range. Yeah there is 1 inch kind out there but Apple would not use that in like next 5 years because of profit reason.

You could just saying you make an excuse to yourself to justify an upgrade, because you could just replace the battery at this point. Overheating at every turn? I'm wondering what you really do with your phone for triggering this so often. My 13 PM never overheating since I have it (2 years).

My battery is still at 90% and even with iOS 17 the battery is still very strong and my phone easily last for a day or 2. It's fine if you want to upgrade, but no way the 13 PM is an obsolete phone. In fact, I don't find much difference between this and the new phones.

Vision Siri? The current Siri is very stupid like zero IQ comparing to Chatgpt lol xd

I think that’s a good upgrade. Two years is a while for a smartphone these days.

Well camera and cpu are the two main things.

People expect like 30% bigger sensor, 30% faster cpu.

Now they give you the same camera sensor for 15 pro, 10% faster cpu only

To me, this year was all about carbon neutrality for Apple while still trying to point to progress & make more profit. It was emphasized with the AW9, but no more leather cases for the phones was a huge step towards this effort. I would expect more of the same next year until Apple can sustain carbon neutral status with the phones.
