It was nice to see an Apple materials scientist explaining it. I really wish that team could find a way to move away from glass backs though. The weight difference between the iPhone 4/4s and the iPhone 5/5s was really noticeable and I think a lot of that was the move away from the glass back to aluminium. Of course now Apple has wireless charging to contend with which really restricts the material choices for the back, and Apple would insist on whatever is used looking very premium, but I would think you need to be pretty much at the top of your game to land a job as a material scientist at a company of Apple's prominence and Apple has big R&D budgets so I'm not giving up hope that maybe one day we might get a phone that doesn't use glass for the back.

Not that complex. Hard wood.

Yet for Apple's official 15 Pro/Pro-Max battery life specifications for video playback the figures are identical between the 14 and 15 models.
They are likely not including AV1 in those playback values, because AV1 support is not listed at all. And current macOS and iOS releases doesn't even support the AV1 codec. I do not know if this has changed for the new releases though.

So since most of you are disappointed, you think 16 is the next major upgrade?
I think Phones have now turned into other mature electronics lifecycles as we can only expect evolutionary changes from here on out. Think TVs, laptops, cameras, etc… There is just not a lot more they can do with this piece of technology as evidenced by the fairly minor meaningful upgrades year over year for the last 5+ years.

What would the new features be to warrant the 16 to be characterized as a "major upgrade"? IMHO, the 15 is a good product, certainly, but is really no more than yet another incremental upgrade. I'm not tempted to ditch my 11 Pro Max quite yet.

- Better battery life : Nope same as last year
- 6x Zoom! - Nope 5x
- Huge chip improvements with A17: Nope, no numbers given on efficiency, CPU and GPU seem only up to 10% better
- 256gb base storag: Nope
- new telephoto and ultrawide lens: Nope
- Faster wireless charging: Nope
Etc
LOL.. there is NO way to know battery life, this is a new processor you cant just go on numbers!

AV1 HARDWARE decoding is being strongly driven by streaming of 8K video, not something people do on a phone. Software decoding of YouTube AV1 video is easily handled with the iPhone cpu. If it was a AV1 hardware Encoder ( which is much more processing intensive) that would be a different story but is a decoder only.

I can imagine that even on lower res users would get a smoother experience with a HW decoder than SW decoding since software decoding "is slow and uses a ton of power" as Arstechnica wrote last year. Even if the CPU alone could handle lower res AV1 videos you can have smoother multitasking with a dedicated decoder.

I guess Apple also wants its pro phones to be future-proofed since AV1 is quickly adopted by more and more content providers. So it's not only about watching 8K videos on your phone but streaming those AV1 videos to other devices too.

Nvidia said three years ago "We are working with Twitch on the next generation of game streaming. AV1 will enable Twitch viewers to watch at up to 1440p 120 FPS at 8mbps; a feasible bitrate that can reach most home-broadband and 5G users". That's on a desktop 3090 so if you want to do that on your phone it's even better with a decoder I would guess.

Finally we're talking about pro iPhones and it's normal to introduce such features in them first for customers who pay so much.

If we think they are holding out features to squeeze minor updates, then this is the list what can be done today:
1) fast charging at android levels. Not saying it is needed feature but the technology is there.
2) periscope actual zoom lens
3) put the data cable inside the box and not sell for 50-70.
4) get the battery to 13pm levels
5) improve long due UW camera
6) give imx 903 sensor as a main camera - right now they are playing nintendo switch games
7) wow factor for 16 could be 0.2” larger screens.
8) improve cooling- 14pm still overheats
9) give the toggle button to turn off part of computational photography.

I agree av1 4k struggles the macs. Do they have one now? For phone - never watched 4k video since no difference between 1080, 2k and 4k on a small screen.

For starters: much-Improved battery life and true fast-charging. True customization for home and lock screens.

It does seem kinda weird. AV1 was never mentioned for iOS 17.
Yet apple says "A17 Pro includes a dedicated AV1 decoder, enabling more efficient, high-quality video experiences for streaming services."

But those services will have to bring updates for it. But i doubt they were able to prepare that beforehand.
And if the older devices don't have at least software based support, they also won't be updating the apps very fast just for the new Pro.

This list is great detail. What I was also thinking of is what the next wave of features or changes would be which would create a revolution of usability, functionality, and user attraction. Something which would evolve the very idea of having a communication device, which would go to the next level of implementation, farther than just a turn of the feature crank for a product with essentially a stale architecture. I don't know what this would all be. When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone, it went so far beyond what users could ever envision that a completely new paradigm was created. That is what my question is aimed at - what is the next communications paradigm? Phones won't last forever. So, what will be their replacement?

I think they will tap into foldable iPhones and that is going to be ultra.

How about split screen to multitask.

I believe my old Note 3 had it in 2014 (also 4K video recording). This would probably be a iPhone 16 PM exclusive due to the extreme processor requirements of the A18 processor and screen size…

And only available with a business subscription and will also include the classical music streaming for free!

The worse stuff is the a17 chip has no battery life improvement.
Lack of fast charging also for Usb 3 on the Pro models is also odd.

Most of these came from Mark German and he got like everything wrong except titanium and USB C which was a legal requirement to sell in Europe

It’s a decent upgrade, nothing more and nothing less, but it certainly didn’t live up to the hype that iPhone X brought. That was on another level.

No, it is not!

My mistake! I thought the 15 Max was 6~ grams heavier than the 13 max. Obviously I was looking at the wrong phone/got my numbers mixed. Wasn't impressed with the phone but this does give me hope next years will be better and still lighter. Like I said the fact I wasn't devastated (and also not ecstatic when I got your post) shows me this phone/upgrade really isnt for me.

I'm just.... not tempted? I actually really miss being tempted :/

Apple has started an active campaign for the last few years to trick/discredit leakers. I don't blame those who are just sticking to the outlining rumors without digging in.

Did you see the poll? My guess is the 15 Pro will sell very well and that the folks whining here (without touching a 15...) are irrelevant.

Personally I expect the Pro 15 iPhones to be reasonable steps forward and I will buy one (without first touching a 15).

people whining come mostly from the iphone 14 pro/promaxes demographics.

in comparison to my already dated 12 mini, the pro 15 looks like giant leap.

it seems like the forgot nowadays that phone upgrade cycles are getting longer and it is those who are holding on their 3+ years phones that are looking forward for the upgrade.

hence, the demand is still going to be there.

the yearly upgraders can complain for whatever they want

I have been updating my pro yearly but this time it’s harder than ever to motivate. I never plug in my phone, I never play games. I was looking forward to the new lens but as the max is too big in my opinion this was also a let down. As I see it there’s no difference between my 14 pro and the 15 pro other than some smoother edges for my use case. This must be the smallest step ever in the yearly update for the regular pro model.
