I guess I don’t know what I’m looking for as I don’t see anything.

Inverted colors maybe it easy to see. Once you see you can't unsee it

EDIT: added some guide lines over the ones I see. It,s not easy to take a pic where you can see it. The camera and the screen do some weird arctifacts. I will try to get a better one. In person i can see it with a grey uniform screen and any brightness.

Ill take that amount of bezel ALL DAMN DAY to have an LCD vs this crap OLED blue shift burn in wonder.

My X is going back. 8 + for me for a year. Hoping Apple gets its stuff together and switches to LCD for the X-2. I'm guessing they "put aside" their dislike for OLED simply so they could release this phone on the tenth anniversary year, even though it really wasn't ready for prime time.

But grey ‘blacks’ are ready for prime-time?

Okay I see it. I had to really move around my setting around to really faintly see it. Is the screen off or black image?

if you are talking Apple LCDs I dont see it. Blacks are inky as hell already. .2% more inkiness isnt worth a blue shift burn in crap display.

Just took a look at a friends Samsung S8. Looks like Samsung saves the best panels for its phones. I wouldnt be surprised if Samsung is dicking apple a bit given their history. Apple had no choice to use Samsung to meet the 10 year deadline for this design, and went with inferior tech as a compromise.

Where is your source that says they couldn't fill the bottom because it's an LCD? Are you guys serious right now? OLED is thinner than LCD, that doesn't mean LCD can't go borderless.

I mean seriously guys, have you not seen a Dell XPS 13 of many other laptops or displays?

Do you really think there's a fat LCD "bar" down there on the Essential phone lol? Quit with your FUD. Essential has that space down there for components, not because the LCD. With your logic, the S8 has a bottom bezel because it's OLED too.

Again, OLED makes things easier and thinner, but borderless LCDs exist.. it's not like they require a bumper lol. Quit spreading misinformation. I'm not saying Apple should have gone LCD, I'm just fixing the misinformation out there.

The chin on the Essential can’t be removed because of it being LCD needing someone for the display drivers and such.

The chin on the iPhone X was able to be removed (and the first iPhone to do so) because the screen was folded underneath itself to tuck the display drivers under the screen instead of in the typical chin there’s always been on all previous smartphones.

You can’t fold an LCD the same way to do what they’ve done with the OLED.

Inverted colors. It was grey with max brightness in a dark room, in an attempt to make it easier to find...

Is it the smokey like color? It's hard to see...

Is it easily noticed in normal usage though? Maybe just in solid background?

I don't get it. I've had ambled screens for years with Samsung. Never once thought about burn in or read anything about it.

Now all of a sudden, iPhones get LED screens and theres tons of stuff saying watch out

Ok so I see the rectangle. My question is, what app or interface element are you suggesting put it there? And how do you know it's not just a manufacturing anomaly? Not saying that would make it ok, but it would make it not image retention/burn. If you showed a picture of the WiFi signal icon burnt in, I could buy that.

In normal usage it's hard to see, but it has 4 days and it's not a cheap device. If this shows up in 4 days maybe in the future it's worse and apple doesn't cover it. I prefer to change it while I am in the 14 first days.

I didn't say it was a burn-in (I think i didn't), in fact I came here asking what was that. I don't remember using any app with that disposition, and I went over all my apps trying to find a match. Did the iPhone came with it? I saw it in day 2 so maybe. I'm with the manufaction error, defective panel... who knows.
In any case, I will try to get a replacement tomorrow, worst case scenario, I will have to wait a month to get it...

The good thing about all the worry here, is that when something DOESN'T go wrong it's feels like miracle has occurred!

Thank you! :)

No, you didn’t... image retention is normal for amoled screens. What you are seeing isn’t permanent. It will go away.
I was afraid of this. Everyone is going to be meticulously inspecting their screens and at the first hint of retention they will be crying foul.

Temporary IR wouldn't bother me whatsoever for the improvements of OLED

This is precisely why I went with the 8 plus this year. I will patiently wait for the first generation issues to be worked out on the X. Next year things will be much better.

LCD is why the Essential Phone has that big odd looking bezel at the bottom.
But honnestly, I don't know why suddenly everyone cares for a non bezel phones. I'm perfectly fine with the bezels if I have a better screen. I always prefer LCD to OLED because OLED is no enough bright to my taste.

I think people are just paranoid because of all of the articles about the Pixel 2XL burning in lately. I don’t expect it to be a real issue for 99.9% of people. Maybe a few will get defective panels and a few will do stupid stuff like leave the screen showing a static image at full brightness for hours.

The iPhone X display is just as bright as the iPhone 8 Plus display.
