And your senator will do… what? Threaten to nuke Europe if the European commission proceeds with any form of legal action against apple’s anti-competitve practices? Call Tim personally and order him to cease all export to EU overnight? C’mon now.

I don't think Apple wants to pull out of the EU, but you never know what a Trump administration might do, if someone tells them a narrative that the EU is targeting American companies to protect the single market.

lol what? When have forced competition by the government been bad?
lol, yes. AT&T breakup many years later resulted in an environment whereby the US isn’t even near the top of the pack of cellular service. Now there will be a similar trend, except the dma has removed apples control over its ecosystem. Time will tell on where this will be headed.
You’re late with 15 years. They have existed since almost day one

Just sitting back and watching this unfold. Some begging for the freedom of side loading apps (then watch the price climb to ridiculous amounts per version circa early 2000s), weak insecure code quality as other stores pop up left and right trying to get a piece of the pie, data breaches and all the whining when the marketplace becomes a game of store hopping to find what you are looking for and a roll of the dice as to whether or not it' safe to download. As they said in Ghostbusters... dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!!! lol
Last time that happened we got steam. Perhaps we will get steam to sell iOS games or other store will take over.

I'm sure developers can't wait for their Apps to be available as Torrents 🙄
I’m sure the open source developers I was referring to would be thrilled about their work being shared over torrents as it would help minimize the overhead cost of storage and bandwidth.

Well that seems weird. Perhaps the USA should have actually mandated forced competition instead of breaking them apart.

Considering EU have a fostered a very competitive cellular services, they have a better history than the USA in terms of knowing what they’re doing it seems.

I'm sure developers can't wait for their Apps to be available as Torrents 🙄
But that’s already a thing for every app you can run on Mac or Windows and those who (rightly) want to avoid malware buy apps legitimately.

I have no issues with any of the apps I own and run on my Mac. It’s all pretty straightforward, easy, and safe.

Some were bought on the Mac App Store. Others from other app stores or directly from devs, etc.

Why are iPhones different, why shouldn’t I be able to run whatever on my iPhone without having to pay Apple?

Apple didn’t make the app and I own my iPhone -Why must I and the app dev keep paying Apple even though I own my iPhone and Apple didn’t make the app that I want to now buy and install on the iPhone that I bought and own?

Isn’t it my iPhone?

I remember when developers thought they'd be able to run everything on the web. Now they need their own app store just to run an ad based game.

The web is done. Long live the five hundred new app stores that simplify the downloading of ads.
That’s because the vast majority of developers have never dealt with the intricacies of shipping massive numbers of atoms as physical devices all over the world. Even they had even the BAREST inkling of how difficult that is, they would have known that the maker of those devices would retain some form of compensation.

I’ve said it before and i’ll say it again. This CTF is pure extortion and Apple has absolutely no right what so ever to charge devs any money for apps that are not on AppStore.
Extortion: The practice of obtaining something especially money through force or threats.

Nope, not Extortion. Apple gets nothing unless a developer enters into a business agreement with them.

This isn’t government fostering competition. This is government taking a companies intellectual property and distributing it to the wind. And then MR says maybe apple can be more competitive with its App Store. Totally laughable.

This is the real Apple tax; devs know they can get more off Apple users.

As an Apple User, dp you feel this frustrating. At least I do. This is why I keep Android phone along side iPhone. I can subscribe for less on Android and use on iPhone.

But why should I have to do this in first place? 30% cut only benefit Apple, not end users.

Strikes me as anti-consumer. A user really wants an app, but it's only available through a purchasing model that they don't want to support.
It IS anti-consumer, but, because it’s anti-consumer and the organization doing it isn’t named “Apple”, it’s fine.

Nobody but the user should have any say over how or what software gets onto the device.
Nobody but the user SHOULD have any say. Unfortunately, there’s a nonzero amount of people that buy things without having any idea what their limitations on the thing they bought is.

Fortunately for those folks, there ARE devices whereby the user has more say, even all the way to installing a different OS! Unfortunately for developers, those types of devices really aren’t popular with folks that have money to spend. So, if they want to make a decent amount of money without relying on ads, there’s one game in town. And the DMA isn’t going to change that in any meaningful way.

They will never blame Apple even though Apple brought this on themselves.
And, the main thing Apple brought on themselves is… being a woefully unpopular cellular phone in the EU. Only 15% of people want to use it. And, according to the EU, they want to drive Apple to have MORE share of the market. And these changes are just the thing that will increase the EU’s dependence on… the iPhone…

HOW is the DMA supposed provide more competition again? I’m still seeing Google and Apple as continuing to be the big players.

Platform Core Services does not include platform SDKs.

The idea that a bunch of people chatting away on a forum know more than Apple's Legal Counsel is laughable.
Especially when one considers that a lot of folks thought the DMA changes meant “I’ll be able to download apps from a website!” It wasn’t a correct analysis then, it isn’t now, and unlikely to be correct in the future.

I'm sure there are bad actors already looking at ways to exploit the opening up of third party stores.
Oh, you can BET on it. “Sir or Madam don’t worry, I’ll help you solve your problem. First, download this App Store app, and then download this special virus protection browser. Once we run it to clean your system and you put in your credit card details, you’ll pay for the service and you’ll be good as new!”

Apple can just opt to pull out of the EU.
Or the EU can just stop all the futzing about, ban all Apple services in the EU and let Apple back in once Apple meets their expectations. This piddling back and forth where Apple continues to rake in millions a day while not paying the fines while they’re appealing (which can and will go on for years)… in what way is this more effective than a banhammer?

Having 3rd party app stores is really looking like a crapshow. Saw that coming a mile away. More of a garbage experience than anything else. Really struggling to see ANY sort of benefit from this bs mandate.
Oh ok, if ONLY Apple didn’t apply dictatorship level censorship to their own App Store, trash it with random refusals to legit apps, extorting developers, ignoring scam apps, and so on and so on…

EU basically told Apple: you can’t do whatever you want. Apple don’t want to comply? Pull ALL the funding and transition into a PRIVATE company just like twitter did, and THEN Tim Cook and his senior “friends” can do whatever they like.

Yep. And that would be further proof that the EU is overstepping. If the users actually wanted it...it wouldn't take an overreaching government to get it.
You are giving user way too much credit than they deserve. Me on the other hand, would not trust user’s power for a second.

Competition is good, it may force Apple to improve their app store. Now advertising takes precedence over returning good search results.
The App Store is working just fine for me and millions of others.

This is beneficial for those who want easier ways to pirate apps like on lagdroid and the play store is an Absolute abomination

Wish they would but then who will run and make draconian changes when you complain iOS is not like lagdroid and is still a closed platform like it always has been.

I wish Apple would do something drastic to protect the spirit and ethos of iOS because I hate this slow evolution into a lagdroid clone.

It’s unfortunate. I heard this song before. Microsoft. Loved windows phone 8 even with its shortcomings.

Windows 10 mobile destroyed the platform with all the lagdroid like changes.

Apple I don’t think will be as dumb as Microsoft but I see the potential similarities except apple is being forced. Microsoft voluntarily chose that path.

I may not even upgrade past the 15 pm/ios 17 since I hate USB c and these future rumored iOS 18 charges.
