I’ve been holding on to my iPhone X waiting for a redesigned iPhone for over 3 years now, and honestly this reveal has been one of the most disappointing from Apple that I have seen.

First let me recap what I think was good in the presentation:

To start off, it has a new design which looks great, but I would use a case so it’s basically moot.

5G support, great, and expected. Android phones have been coming out with 5G for a while now and I still don’t think networks are there yet in the US. Don’t get me wrong this was an essential addition for this years iPhone but I feel like they overhyped it a bit.

New processor. Also a good addition.. Processors in phones nowadays are so fast anyway you would be hard pressed to notice a difference in day to day use, but still good nonetheless.

New cameras. I’m sure they’re amazing. I don’t really use camera on my iPhone X so I can’t comment about how big of an improvement it is but again a nice to have for me.

Now let’s get into the problems I see:

Screen: The OLED screen I’m sure will look as gorgeous as the one on my iPhone X if not more so, but how the hell do they spend 3 years making this new design and still leave the notch? This was one of the biggest disappointments for me. It looks like they didn’t even make it smaller or narrower at all? In addition, it looks like it’s still 60hz whereas android phones have been moving to 90 and 120hz displays for years now.

Lightning port: after the iPad Pro moved to USB C I was really hopeful that the next redesign of the iPhone would follow suit yet here we are again with Lightning. At this point the iPhone is the only device I own that uses the lightning cable, making it an inconvenience when traveling to make sure to pack a special cable just for it. This problem is going to be compounded by the fact that they don’t even include a lightning cable in the box anymore.

Price: So they removed accessories from the box, increased the price by $100-130, bringing the price of the base iPhone 12 (non-pro) to $800-830. And to top it all off, the phone sold at this price point STILL only has 64gb of storage. In 2020. Are you serious right now?

All in all the new iPhone is just too expensive for what it is in my opinion. I am seriously considering jumping ship to Android after being an iPhone user since the 3G.

Guess I’ll check back in another 3 years...

I think you're looking too much into the redesigned aspect of this new phone. Yes, it is technically a redesign but it isn't a full overhaul like we would see in the past. It's more of a design tweak. We will likely see a completely overhauled iPhone next year or the year after. That's the one you probably want. The age of overhauls in smartphone design every two years is long gone.

They do still include a lightning cable in the box.

64GB is fine for the vast majority of people.

I hope you’re right but i just can’t see them redesigning the phone again after only a year. My guess is next year will be an incremental upgrade with faster specs and 120hz

Also while I agree with 64gb being fine for a vast majority of people, the main issue I have Is that Apple keeps jumping up the price of the iPhone with every redesign it seems while barely improving on the core features or in some cases not improving anything at all.

It has been reported for awhile that the 2021 or 2022 iPhone is likely to get a big redesign.

Alternatively, with the screen you're getting a bigger and vastly better quality display for $200 cheaper than you could get last year.

I agree with you on most points as I have an X right now and decided to pass the 11 series in hopes this would have showed more changes (particularly the smaller bezels, smaller notch). The camera alone and the bigger size (going from 5.8 - 6.7) will be nice.

However... apple knows this and wants you to upgrade more frequently. So you'll have to play their game of rolling the dice of hoping whenever you upgrade that you won't be tempted next year and so on. Had they did all this, what will make you upgrade next year or the year after when its already a mature market.

I will be pissed if they do shrink the notch and bezels next year because that is important to me. I am due for an upgrade this year so I will bite the bullet with the 12 pro max and do my best to enjoy it. I would switch to Samsung but all of my family is Apple so its more convenient for me at this point.

Thanks for the reply. Just curious... what don't you like about it?

They do a nice job design wise and it impressed me in the store but I figured down the road it would be more of a hassle to deal with.

I think you have some good points here. Yes Apple should move to usb type c and do away with lightning on their iPhones, hopefully this will happen sooner rather than later but we’ll see. And while the iPhone 12 is $100 more expensive than the iPhone 11 was at launch you also have to remember that Apple has now chosen the retina xdr screen over LCD (the former costs more) and the new ceramic shield. It also has the 5G antennas.

There are so many iPhone users out there and everyone has a charger. I’ve been using the same 3rd party 18Watt fast charger for a couple of years now so I don’t need another one in the box because it would just stay in there lol. When you think about it, it really isn’t that big of a deal. In fact it makes total sense.

I am for more base storage but I think that since pro motion didn’t make the cut this year Apple had to give the pro models a bit more than just the camera enhancements.

Lastly, from the 2020 iPhone SE to the iPhone 12 pro max there’s a device for everyone and I think that since they dropped the prices for the iPhone XR and 11 they had to make it make sense for the entire line up. SE at $399, XR $499, 11 $599, 12 mini $699, 12 $799 and the pros $999 and up. It make sense since they decided to still sell the XR and 11. I’m not mad at that. Of course I’m all for better pricing but this ain’t bad.

Honestly, for me, its mostly about the privacy. Google's ecosystem is built to rape and pillage as much personal data from your use of their services and phones as possible. And Samsung makes it worse; they literally serve ads (that are not removable) in the built-in phone apps... on a 1300$ flagship phone. The design isn't all that bad, but I prefer Apple again here because I find the stainless frames to be leagues ahead of any aluminum frames for durability purposes.

I found it all underwhelming but I still would like to see the phones in person.

Me too. I said last year the 11 seemed like the perfect size in between the Pro and Pro Max. Now the 12 and 12 Pro are both 6.1 so I think I want a 12 Pro. I got the Pro Max last year for the better battery life.

I was disappointed to see the trade value with Apple is only $500 for my Pro Max. The value on the XS Max last year was $600.

Agree with you there.

the redesign is irrelevant. 99% of users have a case over their phone. Hell, the case I have on my 11 PRO MAX has squared edges. So it will look and feel identical to the 12.

like usual, amazing images all comes from lighting. An iPhone 4 can produce breathtaking images with the right lighting. So there’s that.

all that’s pretty cool is the MagSafe attachment, which again, I’m sure that a $29 Amazon case will be able to implement it in the near future.

Dolby Vision is cool. But will anyone notice it ? Probably not. Will the user notice it ? Probably not.

Apple has yet again not listened to their customer base. Literally, all iPhone X and up users have all asked for the same thing. To get rid of that god Forsaken notch. Instead of removing it, they give us sensors and gimmicks that very, very few people even care about.

trust me when I tell you, your Facebook friends are not going to say “ wow ! Look at that Dolby Vision & LiDAR tech going to work ! “ nobody cares. No one will notice anything. The ONE thing everyone will notice is that goddamed notch being removed and they straight up ignored it.

Apple has yet again fallen behind the completion. Cheap Chineseno name phones are coming out with a simple tiny little hole punch meanwhile we have this hideous thing on the top of our screens that we stare at.

this is interesting. Maybe I will go for the one plus 8T to hold me over until the next iPhone redesign comes out.

its gonna be a pain switching ecosystems however

To me its pretty clear that we've longed since reached a point where phones can't have drastic changes or redesigns frequently. I mean, there's only so much you can do.

Look at other matured computers / laptops / tablets. iPads have had certain designs for 5+ years before the current 'Pro' design. the iMac has looked identical essentially for the past decade.

The design changes for iPhone haven't been significant since the X came along with an 'all screen' display and Face ID.

Though I think if you were to use an 11 or 12 it'll feel significant in some ways compared to your X (I'm currently using an 11 Pro and an X). The camera alone is essentially why I upgraded from the X last year - I think you'd be quite surprised by how improved that is.

5G support, great, and expected. Android phones have been coming out with 5G for a while now and I still don’t think networks are there yet in the US. Don’t get me wrong this was an essential addition for this years iPhone but I feel like they overhyped it a bit.

I don't think it's overhyped.

As a user of both platforms. I'm glad iPhone finally has 5G support. My first 5G phone was the S20+ and now the Galaxy Fold 2. On both those phones I still get coverage in places where 4G LTE dies out. Like in elevators, basements, some known dead zones, and etc.

As of now 5G mmwave (the ultra fast 5G) is still scarce. Living in NYC I ran into several spots that have mmwave, and at the moment it's more of a cool factor to see the speed test hit near 1gig download and download a Netflix movie in less than a minute. Thing is, mmwave will be very useful for places like airports, military bases, amusement parks, tourist attractions, and etc.

My iPhone 11 Pro Max signal strength isn't that great. Same with most previous iPhones I've had. And plenty of others have the same known issue. I truly hope 5G changes that. If it's anything like I experienced on Android phones, then it's a HUGE upgrade IMO.

I'm so sick of the lighting port. And yea, not a fan at all of not including it in the box.
