Yep, it’s basically the iPhone X version 3. That’s not all a bad thing though. The camera tech seems like it would be impressive and the boxier edges looks nice. Everything is there except the 120hz screen and the reduced notch. Also 3D Touch but that’s too soon.

I found it all underwhelming but I still would like to see the phones in person.

I feel the same way. My excitement was at the bare minimum anyway with all the leaks the past few months. The whole 5G thing doesn't impress me at all at this point since I will barely be in 5G territory when out and about and the "notch" is still there. Yes, I will still be ordering the 12PM for myself and the wife and she was even contemplating waiting until next year's version to upgrade. At this point I say to myself, what could Apple possibly have in store for us next year to increase our excitement? I know a lot of the major technical upgrades are under the hood, but I want something to take me back to when I first received my XS Max kind of excitement. In a way I feel as though Apple has "spoiled" me in setting my expectations high from year to year.

Truth be told my favorite camera was on my old HTC Evo 3D. Probably the only time I cared about having the two cameras. My One M8 had two cameras too but I’m not really sure why as it didn’t support 3D.

I have to agree with you and I said this a few weeks ago Apple are simply trading water and the tide is going to turn and majority will slowly move on. The price just doesn’t reflect any value and the fact they still have not gotten rid of the notch sums up how lacking they are in ideas.

They need a innovator in charge like a Steve Jobs who had forward thinking ideas and not somebody who thinks improvement in the camera area is all that you need. Let’s get one thing straight here for the majority of people the images sit on our phone and we never even print them out. So improving the camera every year makes very little difference in people’s life’s.

I have an X with a battery that is down to 81% and needs replacement.

I normally upgrade my phone every other year but held out one extra year to see what Apple could deliver.

Very disappointed with the lack of touchID on the power button of these new phones... Steve Jobs would have pushed and found a way to make it happen during COVID even if it meant a delay. I despise the notch and had hoped they would at least shrink it.

Since I need more than the minimum storage for photos/videos/music/apps I would end up upgrading the 12 to more storage and then the price difference between 12 and 12 pro is much smaller. I am an amateur photographer who shoots with a Z6 Nikon and always want the best camera capability in my phone I can get.... I just don't know that I can push myself to carrying the huge Max size phone so I will probably end up with the 12 Pro and buy it with the upgrade program with an eye towards upgrading next year.

Am I the only person that has never minded the notch? The phones are so big now that a notch is irrelevant to me.

Otherwise I find it interesting that after years of calling for a redesign, we finally get a pretty big one (the first rectangular / sharp edge iPhone in several years) and people are still disappointed

I find the pin hole more annoying than the notch. I’ll take the notch over that any day. I don’t want to read or watch something and have this black circle in the middle of it.

By the way, their pro line this year has been priced The same for the last three years and now you’re getting double the storage, 5G millimeter and sub 6, Qualcomm modems with double the LTE speeds, more ram (6gb), a lot of improvements in cameras, lidar scanner, new design, higher ip68(6 meters for 30 min), a new advanced 5nm A14 chip. All this for the same price, and they removed a charger and kept a cable. and you’re complaining. That’s cool. Get an android

I’ve been holding on to my iPhone X waiting for a redesigned iPhone for over 3 years now, and honestly this reveal has been one of the most disappointing from Apple that I have seen.

First let me recap what I think was good in the presentation:

To start off, it has a new design which looks great, but I would use a case so it’s basically moot.

5G support, great, and expected. Android phones have been coming out with 5G for a while now and I still don’t think networks are there yet in the US. Don’t get me wrong this was an essential addition for this years iPhone but I feel like they overhyped it a bit.

New processor. Also a good addition.. Processors in phones nowadays are so fast anyway you would be hard pressed to notice a difference in day to day use, but still good nonetheless.

New cameras. I’m sure they’re amazing. I don’t really use camera on my iPhone X so I can’t comment about how big of an improvement it is but again a nice to have for me.

Now let’s get into the problems I see:

Screen: The OLED screen I’m sure will look as gorgeous as the one on my iPhone X if not more so, but how the hell do they spend 3 years making this new design and still leave the notch? This was one of the biggest disappointments for me. It looks like they didn’t even make it smaller or narrower at all? In addition, it looks like it’s still 60hz whereas android phones have been moving to 90 and 120hz displays for years now.

Lightning port: after the iPad Pro moved to USB C I was really hopeful that the next redesign of the iPhone would follow suit yet here we are again with Lightning. At this point the iPhone is the only device I own that uses the lightning cable, making it an inconvenience when traveling to make sure to pack a special cable just for it. This problem is going to be compounded by the fact that they don’t even include a lightning cable in the box anymore.

Price: So they removed accessories from the box, increased the price by $100-130, bringing the price of the base iPhone 12 (non-pro) to $800-830. And to top it all off, the phone sold at this price point STILL only has 64gb of storage. In 2020. Are you serious right now?

All in all the new iPhone is just too expensive for what it is in my opinion. I am seriously considering jumping ship to Android after being an iPhone user since the 3G.

Guess I’ll check back in another 3 years...

I was at a point this year where I needed to get a different/newer phone because my daughter needed one and she doesn't get a BRAND NEW one she gets the hand me down. (I previously owned a 10XS max) The thing is in the past I have been a iphone yearly upgrader even if it was a 1st time redesign before the 10Xs max. I was eagerly awaiting the new 12 but honestly thought about it and decided about 3 weeks ago to go with a 11pro max as they were selling it with $300 off. Had my girl not needed a new phone (hers was a very heavily used iphone 8 which was nice but is no longer working) I seriously think i could have got a couple more years out of it. To me the 11pro max is essentially the 10xs max except for the newer camera (for what its worth i can see a difference there over my 10). Tech with apple in the phone department is def slowing down and not really showing any signs of significant improvement. Out of all the possible things apple could ever add to a phone the only one that would make me KINDA consider upgrading is a usb c port for charging so I can only have one cord with me at all times. I do like the redesign but I literally always have a case before I have the new phone and put it into it within 30 seconds after opening the phone so its not enough.

The flat edge redesign is sweet and I love it. Also the Mini is fantastic.

But the "redesigned" iPhone 12/12 Pro looks too darn similar to the 11 Pro and the previous models. Same sized 3 year old notch, and hideous 2/3-eye spider camera layout. Apple didn't do themselves any favour introducing the new iPhone when it looks just like the iPhone 11 models.

They should've at least reduced the size of the notch (or get rid of it completely) and change the layout of the camera array. It would've made the redesign more worthwhile and have more of an impact.

As I stated a few pages back, I didn't see enough from the 12 to upgrade from an iPhone 11 in a non-5G area for at least another year. For my use, I really, really like my iPhone 11 and why pay more for technology from the carriers I can't yet use?

A friend of my told me that I can't apply the same thinking used from the iPhone 4-8/X where I upgraded every year because the carrier contracts don't exist like they used to back in those days, 2010 - 2017 or so. Now Apple realizes the market changed and that many people are now hanging onto their phones 2-4 years so they have to future proof them b/c 5G will be another year or two away for the masses that don't live in the large metro areas. So for example, if an iPhone X customer needs to replace their 3 year old phone with a new phone, they buy the iPhone 12 of their choice with OLED, 5G, etc. which will eventually become viable because it was future proofed in today's design.

I have to do a better job evolving my thinking as Apple has done with their flagship iPhone business knowing this ain't 2012. I would have been very happy to upgrade to an "iPhone 11s" with the same LCD screen, probably improved battery and camera knowing that 5G isn't viable for me yet. Then when 5G is or becomes viable in a year or two for me, then I'll upgrade that next fall. But I understand Apple isn't doing it that way anymore b/c the market changed.

Will Apple come out with an SE3 early next year for those upgrades? By adopting this iPhone 12 Leap, and not offering an 11s, it feels like they have fully walked away from their old yearly upgrade business and they are almost forcing us into a every 2-3 year upgrade cycle.

I actually dislike the rectangular, stainless steel sides. Looks outdated, like an old iPod. I like the glass design of my iPhone X. Also, the iPhone X actually has smaller dimensions compared to the iPhone 12 Pro with the same screen size.

Actually I have both platforms. You can play Apple's advocate, but the consumer doesn't give a damn what you're running on about. NOBODY likes to feel skimped on, even with something as a charge adapter and cable. And these are not cheap $2 cables either. Consumers are going to have to shell out at least $40 for the adapter and cable.

NOBODY likes to feel skimped on, even with something as a charge adapter and cable. And these are not cheap $2 cables either. Consumers are going to have to shell out at least $40 for the adapter and cable.

Ok they’re removing the charger. The cable is still in the box. Half the people buying already have adapters at home they haven’t used and are just lying around somewhere. Other half will probably buy it for 19$. They’re not 40$.

Most people don't have a USB C charger unless you are updating from an iPhone 11 which seems nonsensical for 5G when its not in your area and travel is covid restricted but thats my view for this year. So thats headphones and a charger if they want the full package, this is more about how many iPhones Apple can fit on a pallet and how much extra they make from chargers than saving the earth. People have to buy USB C chargers, thats really helping being to be green as those old chargers from the iPhone USB A days are useless. on this phone. They should have put two cables in the box that would have helped, one USB C and one USB A to lightining

I think you're looking too much into the redesigned aspect of this new phone. Yes, it is technically a redesign but it isn't a full overhaul like we would see in the past. It's more of a design tweak. We will likely see a completely overhauled iPhone next year or the year after. That's the one you probably want. The age of overhauls in smartphone design every two years is long gone.

They do still include a lightning cable in the box.

64GB is fine for the vast majority of people.

Apple has never completely redesigned a phone after only one year. Next year will be the exact same design with an incremental update for internals.

But that's something I see across all brands, smartphones are pretty evolved and new features come less often. It isn't enough to refresh every year but maybe that's a good thing as well. I'll be super happy with my 12 pro coming from a 7. And I also think it's the best looking iPhone to date (both normal and pro).

Agree, although I am moving from a XS to a 12 Pro. The main reason for me upgrading is really that my partner needs my phone and I have put money aside for this upgrade. Do I NEED to upgrade? No. I am excited about the new shape, slightly bigger/better screen, camera improvements but that’s about it.
Smart Phones just don’t have the huge leaps they used to, which is definitely a good thing for consumers. If you don’t want to be part of an upgrade cycle, you no longer have to be and you aren’t missing out on a tonne, unlike previously where the phones performance would really drop off in comparison. To complain about it just doesn’t make sense to me, just don’t get one.

It's a bit more complicated. Many people don't actually understand what 32GB or 64GB or 128GB means, they just see a bigger number and a bigger price tag. Of course if you are say a professional photographer, and you need 256GB, I expect you to know, but lots of people have no idea.

And for many of these people it turns out that 32GB is borderline. They put a bit of music on their phone, and some photos, and at some point they run out of storage. For those people, who don't understand the whole problem, 64GB is a godsend. So I would say:

64GB is fine for the vast majority of people who don't understand what it means.
