Am I the only person that has never minded the notch? The phones are so big now that a notch is irrelevant to me.

Otherwise I find it interesting that after years of calling for a redesign, we finally get a pretty big one (the first rectangular / sharp edge iPhone in several years) and people are still disappointed
I actually dislike the rectangular, stainless steel sides. Looks outdated, like an old iPod. I like the glass design of my iPhone X. Also, the iPhone X actually has smaller dimensions compared to the iPhone 12 Pro with the same screen size.

I am quite pleased, in that I don't feel the need to upgrade. 5G is useless where I live, the CPU in my 11 is already faster than is needed for me. I am sure the cameras are better but again they are already great for a point and click person like me that has no idea about photography and just wants to take a good picture.

Usually quick to upgrade as I see the benefit but not this time. Not that I don't like what it brings, it will be a nice upgrade for many with older models or just those that want it.

No you won't be the only one. These threads pop up after every single key note without fail. Some will be excited for the new models and others will be disappointed in them. You aren't alone.

I agree with you on most points as I have an X right now and decided to pass the 11 series in hopes this would have showed more changes (particularly the smaller bezels, smaller notch). The camera alone and the bigger size (going from 5.8 - 6.7) will be nice.

However... apple knows this and wants you to upgrade more frequently. So you'll have to play their game of rolling the dice of hoping whenever you upgrade that you won't be tempted next year and so on. Had they did all this, what will make you upgrade next year or the year after when its already a mature market.

I will be pissed if they do shrink the notch and bezels next year because that is important to me. I am due for an upgrade this year so I will bite the bullet with the 12 pro max and do my best to enjoy it. I would switch to Samsung but all of my family is Apple so its more convenient for me at this point.
You don’t need to be pissed if they make the changes you want next year. You can just sell your 12 and get the 13 using the justification you were bamboozled when you bought the 12

I'm just disappointed about the camera differences between the 12 Pro models.
That I have to buy the biggest screen iPhone to get the latest sensor/camera tech is just "meh".

I can live with the lightning port, since I use wireless charging at home. And for travelling it's not a big problem to bring another cable with me.

Me too. I said last year the 11 seemed like the perfect size in between the Pro and Pro Max. Now the 12 and 12 Pro are both 6.1 so I think I want a 12 Pro. I got the Pro Max last year for the better battery life.

I was disappointed to see the trade value with Apple is only $500 for my Pro Max. The value on the XS Max last year was $600.
Thats up to you if you accept the 500$. If you put in a little time and effort you could nearly get twice what Apple would give you

Agree with you there.

the redesign is irrelevant. 99% of users have a case over their phone. Hell, the case I have on my 11 PRO MAX has squared edges. So it will look and feel identical to the 12.

like usual, amazing images all comes from lighting. An iPhone 4 can produce breathtaking images with the right lighting. So there’s that.

all that’s pretty cool is the MagSafe attachment, which again, I’m sure that a $29 Amazon case will be able to implement it in the near future.

Dolby Vision is cool. But will anyone notice it ? Probably not. Will the user notice it ? Probably not.

Apple has yet again not listened to their customer base. Literally, all iPhone X and up users have all asked for the same thing. To get rid of that god Forsaken notch. Instead of removing it, they give us sensors and gimmicks that very, very few people even care about.

trust me when I tell you, your Facebook friends are not going to say “ wow ! Look at that Dolby Vision & LiDAR tech going to work ! “ nobody cares. No one will notice anything. The ONE thing everyone will notice is that goddamed notch being removed and they straight up ignored it.

Apple has yet again fallen behind the completion. Cheap Chineseno name phones are coming out with a simple tiny little hole punch meanwhile we have this hideous thing on the top of our screens that we stare at.
That’s not a fair comparison. There’s enough tech in the notch to overtake the entirety of a cheap Chinese phone. You keep forgetting that the notch isn’t a design aesthetic. It actually has a legitimate reason for existing. And one can argue from a design perspective that the notch identifies the device as being an iPhone

I'd actually say the best value iPhone for most right now is the SE (shock horror, it's meant to be the "value" phone).
  • TouchID so it unlocks with a mask on
  • same processor as an 11
  • same gpu was an 11 with smaller screen to drive
  • notch free!
  • much cheaper

Couldn’t agree more, I’m hanging onto my SE 2020 for a long time. It can do most of what the newer phones can do for a significantly lower price. Best value for money phone Apple has made for a long time.

60 Hz is a no go. It just doesn’t feel right if you are using 120 Hz for years on other devices. I also won’t be buying ARM Macs if they come with 60 Hz displays. PC have already 300+ Hz.
I just need a good argument how not having 120hz interrupts the way you’ve always used your phone. If there’s a pertinent reason that not having it greatly disadvantages the end user I need to know

I don't think it's overhyped.

As a user of both platforms. I'm glad iPhone finally has 5G support. My first 5G phone was the S20+ and now the Galaxy Fold 2. On both those phones I still get coverage in places where 4G LTE dies out. Like in elevators, basements, some known dead zones, and etc.

As of now 5G mmwave (the ultra fast 5G) is still scarce. Living in NYC I ran into several spots that have mmwave, and at the moment it's more of a cool factor to see the speed test hit near 1gig download and download a Netflix movie in less than a minute. Thing is, mmwave will be very useful for places like airports, military bases, amusement parks, tourist attractions, and etc.

My iPhone 11 Pro Max signal strength isn't that great. Same with most previous iPhones I've had. And plenty of others have the same known issue. I truly hope 5G changes that. If it's anything like I experienced on Android phones, then it's a HUGE upgrade IMO.

I'm so sick of the lighting port. And yea, not a fan at all of not including it in the box.

Sell low storage iPhone, make more revenue from iCloud storage. What else you expect from Apple?
That’s what I expect an American corporation to do: Capitalism. Look it up. You’ll be amazed

I’m underwhelmed, but I’m not upgrading from my 11 Pro, which I love. Personally I don’t think there are enough differences between the 11 Pro and the 12 Pro. I’ll wait for iPhone 13. ;)

You missed the point. Qualcomm is now on board. That means regular LTE has moved from “up to 1gbps to up to 2gbps” you have double the LTE strength. That’s aside from 5G. It’s worth it just to move away from the intel modems in the 11s

I think once you hold the phone, see The camera reviews, you’ll change.

No, I didn't miss the point. Like I say, it will make no difference, at least no practical difference to my use of the phone.

I personally don’t mind the notch. I don’t often look at it directly anyway.

I’d have to disagree with the flat edges being a major design change. The 12 Pro looks barely any different to my 11 Pro. Plus the flat sides are incredibly ugly.

You do you. I just feel that the prospect of better signals and connectivity will make a significant difference for me since I’m out and about and use LTE more than Wi-Fi

I think the flat sides are absolutely gorgeous. Meet me back here in the comments sections when the stainless steel versions are out and people have had time to contact with it and we will see whose opinion wins out. 😆

(Cross post from Reddit since apparently everything you post iPhone subreddit is subject to approval)

I’ve been holding on to my iPhone X waiting for a redesigned iPhone for over 3 years now, and honestly this reveal has been one of the most disappointing from Apple that I have seen.

First let me recap what I think was good in the presentation:

To start off, it has a new design which looks great, but I would use a case so it’s basically moot.

5G support, great, and expected. Android phones have been coming out with 5G for a while now and I still don’t think networks are there yet in the US. Don’t get me wrong this was an essential addition for this years iPhone but I feel like they overhyped it a bit.

New processor. Also a good addition.. Processors in phones nowadays are so fast anyway you would be hard pressed to notice a difference in day to day use, but still good nonetheless.

New cameras. I’m sure they’re amazing. I don’t really use camera on my iPhone X so I can’t comment about how big of an improvement it is but again a nice to have for me.

Now let’s get into the problems I see:

Screen: The OLED screen I’m sure will look as gorgeous as the one on my iPhone X if not more so, but how the hell do they spend 3 years making this new design and still leave the notch? This was one of the biggest disappointments for me. It looks like they didn’t even make it smaller or narrower at all? In addition, it looks like it’s still 60hz whereas android phones have been moving to 90 and 120hz displays for years now.

Lightning port: after the iPad Pro moved to USB C I was really hopeful that the next redesign of the iPhone would follow suit yet here we are again with Lightning. At this point the iPhone is the only device I own that uses the lightning cable, making it an inconvenience when traveling to make sure to pack a special cable just for it. This problem is going to be compounded by the fact that they don’t even include a lightning cable in the box anymore.

Price: So they removed accessories from the box, increased the price by $100-130, bringing the price of the base iPhone 12 (non-pro) to $800-830. And to top it all off, the phone sold at this price point STILL only has 64gb of storage. In 2020. Are you serious right now?

All in all the new iPhone is just too expensive for what it is in my opinion. I am seriously considering jumping ship to Android after being an iPhone user since the 3G.

Guess I’ll check back in another 3 years...

You had me until you mentioned the refresh rate. Utterly pointless for anyone other than a professional video editor. Apparently gamers like this too but personally I can’t tell the difference with anything above 60hz on a LCD type of display. If these were CRTs we are talking about then yes because you can actually see the scan lines. I can’t for the life of me figure out what people are using their phones for that they think they need a better display than their TV.

Other than that I agree. I’m not a photographer, if I was I’d have a professional camera. Real photographers don’t use phones for their income. I was happy with the camera on my flip phone in 2007.

I could really care less about the notch, but I see how some people don’t like it. 5G is also highly unnecessary as nobody even uses 4Gs fastest speeds. Who is using more than 50mbps bandwidth on their phone? 4K streaming uses less than half that.

The only thing I’m disappointed about is a lack of a touchID sensor. Every android phone has one, and they proved that they know how to with the iPad’s side button. I could also do with USB C, but I think there are enough lightning cables out there by now that I don’t care as much.

So you expect others to bend over and shut their mouth in the name of capitalism? Everybody has the right to complain.
If you don’t like the system change the system or just accept the system. Nobody is bending you over. You choose to do business with any company you like. Just boycott and don’t buy this year. Do whatever you like. You have every right to complain but I have a right to counter your complaint. And i say this. A corporation exists to make profits. It’s counter productive to look for ways to make less profit because you feel the customer is being disadvantaged. I know what I’m getting into With Apple. Their products can be expensive but the customer service and convenience they provide outweigh things like removing a charger from the box. It’s what you’re willing to put up with

That’s fine, we’re allowed to like different things. I couldn’t care less if most people like the flat sides, I don’t, so that’s that.
