You're not the only one. iPhone 12 base (64gb) price is actually $867 vs. iPhone 11 base $699.

$699 + $100 Price increase + $30 Unlocked fee + $19 AC Adapter + $19 Earpods with Lightning = $867

I will get LG Wing this year.

Well said: Disappointed! Absolutely no reason for me to give up my iPhone 11. The iPhone X screen wasn't all that to me and I live in a rural area where 5G is unavailable, plus LTE is more than adequate for my use. Apple raised the price $100 for iPhone 12 from the 11, made minimal improvements overall and I don't want the smaller iPhone 12 mini with reduced battery life. I'd buy a 12 if it were $699, but not $799 for a "leap" I don't see.

Going to sit this year's phone out, just like I sat the Xs year out.

For most users, IMO, the best value in all the iPhones right now is the iPhone 11 for a reduced $599.

Am I the only person that has never minded the notch? The phones are so big now that a notch is irrelevant to me.

Otherwise I find it interesting that after years of calling for a redesign, we finally get a pretty big one (the first rectangular / sharp edge iPhone in several years) and people are still disappointed

I only mind the notch when I come from an android phone to an iPhone. But even then once I use the iPhone for a bit it’s all good. I would prefer the notch to go away though.

Yeah for you that has the iPhone 11 there’s really no need to upgrade. I’m coming from an 8 plus so I’m definitely grabbing that iPhone 12

but how the hell do they spend 3 years making this new design and still leave the notch?
Yeah this is by far my biggest complaint about the “new” iPhones.

I love the return of the flat edge design but to retain the same sized notch as it first debuted 3 years ago is just sad. This just screams laziness and milking the customer. The same 3 year old notch will now be a 4 year old notch until the next iPhone, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the notch again stays untouched, because we’re talking about Apple here.

Yup they usually change designs every 3 years so the next two years we’re definitely getting these designs, there’s no way Apple will change design again next year.

As someone that is sensitive to PWM, I’m disappointed that there are no new LCD based models. I guess my 11 is the last iPhone for me.

If you're expecting amazing year on year updates on a fairly mature device (like the iPhones and iPads and Macs now are), you're always going to be disappointed.

Run your phones for 2-4 years; the incremental upgrades over that time are decent.

If you're hopping from year X to year X+1 every time, there's just never going to be a huge leap these days. Most of the "problems" with older phones are solved.

Absolutely no reason for me to give up my iPhone 11

Well.... no surprise? See above.

I'd actually say the best value iPhone for most right now is the SE (shock horror, it's meant to be the "value" phone).
  • TouchID so it unlocks with a mask on
  • same processor as an 11
  • same gpu was an 11 with smaller screen to drive
  • notch free!
  • much cheaper

I hope you’re right but i just can’t see them redesigning the phone again after only a year. My guess is next year will be an incremental upgrade with faster specs and 120hz

Also while I agree with 64gb being fine for a vast majority of people, the main issue I have Is that Apple keeps jumping up the price of the iPhone with every redesign it seems while barely improving on the core features or in some cases not improving anything at all.
I agree with you to some extent. I think the notch is here to stay for the next model revisions. i too was hoping for something smaller but I think it’d fruitless to wait for the notch to disappear. So another 2 years probably will have the same design s fudge. Plus it differentiates iPhones from other full screen devices. When you see the notch on tv you know it’s an iPhone.
Anway I also agree on the dumb price increase. They moved the phone most will buy, the 12, too close to the 12 pro. It’s a thousand dollar phone that’s supposed to Be affordable! Ugh I think Apple figures sales will be low so make up the margins by charging more per phone.

(Cross post from Reddit since apparently everything you post iPhone subreddit is subject to approval)

I’ve been holding on to my iPhone X waiting for a redesigned iPhone for over 3 years now, and honestly this reveal has been one of the most disappointing from Apple that I have seen.

First let me recap what I think was good in the presentation:

To start off, it has a new design which looks great, but I would use a case so it’s basically moot.

5G support, great, and expected. Android phones have been coming out with 5G for a while now and I still don’t think networks are there yet in the US. Don’t get me wrong this was an essential addition for this years iPhone but I feel like they overhyped it a bit.

New processor. Also a good addition.. Processors in phones nowadays are so fast anyway you would be hard pressed to notice a difference in day to day use, but still good nonetheless.

New cameras. I’m sure they’re amazing. I don’t really use camera on my iPhone X so I can’t comment about how big of an improvement it is but again a nice to have for me.

Now let’s get into the problems I see:

Screen: The OLED screen I’m sure will look as gorgeous as the one on my iPhone X if not more so, but how the hell do they spend 3 years making this new design and still leave the notch? This was one of the biggest disappointments for me. It looks like they didn’t even make it smaller or narrower at all? In addition, it looks like it’s still 60hz whereas android phones have been moving to 90 and 120hz displays for years now.

Lightning port: after the iPad Pro moved to USB C I was really hopeful that the next redesign of the iPhone would follow suit yet here we are again with Lightning. At this point the iPhone is the only device I own that uses the lightning cable, making it an inconvenience when traveling to make sure to pack a special cable just for it. This problem is going to be compounded by the fact that they don’t even include a lightning cable in the box anymore.

Price: So they removed accessories from the box, increased the price by $100-130, bringing the price of the base iPhone 12 (non-pro) to $800-830. And to top it all off, the phone sold at this price point STILL only has 64gb of storage. In 2020. Are you serious right now?

All in all the new iPhone is just too expensive for what it is in my opinion. I am seriously considering jumping ship to Android after being an iPhone user since the 3G.

Guess I’ll check back in another 3 years...

/rant
I fully support everything you have said. Dangerous post for this forum though mate. Check out my thread!

I think you have some good points here. Yes Apple should move to usb type c and do away with lightning on their iPhones, hopefully this will happen sooner rather than later but we’ll see. And while the iPhone 12 is $100 more expensive than the iPhone 11 was at launch you also have to remember that Apple has now chosen the retina xdr screen over LCD (the former costs more) and the new ceramic shield. It also has the 5G antennas.

There are so many iPhone users out there and everyone has a charger. I’ve been using the same 3rd party 18Watt fast charger for a couple of years now so I don’t need another one in the box because it would just stay in there lol. When you think about it, it really isn’t that big of a deal. In fact it makes total sense.

I am for more base storage but I think that since pro motion didn’t make the cut this year Apple had to give the pro models a bit more than just the camera enhancements.

Lastly, from the 2020 iPhone SE to the iPhone 12 pro max there’s a device for everyone and I think that since they dropped the prices for the iPhone XR and 11 they had to make it make sense for the entire line up. SE at $399, XR $499, 11 $599, 12 mini $699, 12 $799 and the pros $999 and up. It make sense since they decided to still sell the XR and 11. I’m not mad at that. Of course I’m all for better pricing but this ain’t bad.
I think we see the future of charging for the iPhone and it’s not wired. So usb c while awesome (I’m usb c all the way at home), will never come to the iPhone. Mag Safe is the standard now.

Agree with you there.

the redesign is irrelevant. 99% of users have a case over their phone. Hell, the case I have on my 11 PRO MAX has squared edges. So it will look and feel identical to the 12.

like usual, amazing images all comes from lighting. An iPhone 4 can produce breathtaking images with the right lighting. So there’s that.

all that’s pretty cool is the MagSafe attachment, which again, I’m sure that a $29 Amazon case will be able to implement it in the near future.

Dolby Vision is cool. But will anyone notice it ? Probably not. Will the user notice it ? Probably not.

Apple has yet again not listened to their customer base. Literally, all iPhone X and up users have all asked for the same thing. To get rid of that god Forsaken notch. Instead of removing it, they give us sensors and gimmicks that very, very few people even care about.

trust me when I tell you, your Facebook friends are not going to say “ wow ! Look at that Dolby Vision & LiDAR tech going to work ! “ nobody cares. No one will notice anything. The ONE thing everyone will notice is that goddamed notch being removed and they straight up ignored it.

Apple has yet again fallen behind the completion. Cheap Chineseno name phones are coming out with a simple tiny little hole punch meanwhile we have this hideous thing on the top of our screens that we stare at.
Agree 100%

There are two sides to the equation, announced improvements : personal expectation

Almost all 'the new' had been priced-in already for people who frequent fan speculation sites. It's a solid launch in a tough year, all the important things got a bit better + 5G, new colour / shape / size.

Some people expect too much - Apple are a commercial enterprise giving a strong return on shareholder capital deployed & will undoubtedly continue to do so another year. If it's not for you personally then that may be a little disappointing, but a little context & perspective would help.

You're not the only one. It's concerning to see how Apple has become this huge ocean liner that can't be redirected within six months.

We're in Covid times for nine months now and they give us a phone with features no one needs (faster FaceID?) but not features we do need (TouchID on the power button as a second unlock option for when we are out and about with face masks on). If it were a new feature they've never ever had, I'd be forgiving.

But it's a parts bin feature. The software is all there (Apple sells TouchID phones still TODAY new) and the hardware is parts bin as well (they've introduced it to the iPad Air 4).

The silly thing is, an iPad we often use indoors/at home where Face unlock beats touch unlock. A Phone we use out and about where touch unlock for the next year or so beats face unlock.

Thus no purchase from me this year.

I too have a 3 year old X after having the original, 3G, 4, 5, 6 Plus, 6S Plus, and 7 Plus. I skipped the annual when the XS and XS Max came out and didn't feel last year's camera phones were enough reason to get an 11 Pro, added to which the 11 was the middle size like the R.

That said at 3 years, I will likely get the 12 Pro Max and not the 12 Pro, hoping not to have much finger / hand strain trying to use it one-handed and enjoy the screen real estate again after the X for emails and webpages, etc. I hope my pockets don't hate me.

If there is something groundbreaking next year, I'd consider an annual upgrade again, otherwise using the 2 year interval method I will be in a prime spot for the 14 lineup should it be awesome. However, given that my X is 3 years old in a couple weeks and battery life isn't what it used to be, I was going to upgrade this year no matter what. I wish the Pro Blue was like the non-pro Blue, like the Blue on the Series 6 Watch and not "Pacific", but I think I get why. I also don't like the staggered release. But I want a bigger screen and I don't think the jump from my 5.8" X to a 6.1" 12 Pro is much, so it's the Pro Max for me.

Yes, they touted more camera stuff, which my X camera has serious lag issues and though I don't take tons of pics, the Portrait Mode on it is awesome and I will enjoy the camera. I don't game or watch much content, so 120Ghz doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

That said the 3 things I would have liked to see in order of priority:

1. Get rid of the Camera Bump. Make the phone thicker and the camera flush. I think I'd like to go back to careless, especially with the less slippery squared design, and actually see the color of my phone. One of the biggest reasons I have a case is to make the phone flatter.

2. Use the added thickness of making the phone as thick as the camera bump, to increase the thickness and volume of the Battery for longer life!!!

3. I would have loved to see Dual Authentication. FaceID and iPad Air Sleep/Wake TouchID button.

3b. I too would love to see the notch gone. I'd prefer a thin forehead over the notch. I think it detracts from watching full screen video.

this is interesting. Maybe I will go for the one plus 8T to hold me over until the next iPhone redesign comes out.

its gonna be a pain switching ecosystems however

OK, let me squash some myths here. I switched from iPhone to Android back in 2016 and it's the best decision I have ever made. Until then, I relied heavily on iCloud, iOS calendar etc. This is where you need to make a change.

Move all of your contacts to Google. Download Google calendar and start adding entries to that. Move your storage items to Drive and your images over to Google pictures. Finally, get a GMail account and use it for primary email. All of this will take less time than it would take to set up a new iPhone.

Once done, you will be able to access EVERYTHING you ever need on any phone. Want to switch back to iPhone? No problem, just link your Google account and all of your content will be there. It's so simple.

I have to agree with you and I said this a few weeks ago Apple are simply trading water and the tide is going to turn and majority will slowly move on. The price just doesn’t reflect any value and the fact they still have not gotten rid of the notch sums up how lacking they are in ideas.

They need a innovator in charge like a Steve Jobs who had forward thinking ideas and not somebody who thinks improvement in the camera area is all that you need. Let’s get one thing straight here for the majority of people the images sit on our phone and we never even print them out. So improving the camera every year makes very little difference in people’s life’s.
