I just installed Mojave on my MBP and I tried the php file and it doesn't do anything.

try this :) (run in terminal assuming your in the same directory as the file: php frame-buffer-lister.php ) edit: remember to install otool, typing otool into terminal should trigger the xcode command line utilities installer

It worked. At first it didn't, but I changed AMD6000Controller.kext to AMD9500Controller.kext and then it runs. It shows the GPU for Yelcho frame-buffer has 5 DP and 1 HDMI port. So I'm going to say it's probably not a PCIe card, but it could be (compared to the Orinoco frame-buffer for the Pulse RX 580 which has 2 DP, 2 HDMI, and 1 DVI).

interesting, its worth mentioning that most Apple stuff these days dont have HDMI ports,

so I wonder what it could be... (do you think you could fit 5 mDPs and a HDMI port on a PCI bracket?) theres a bunch of Frame-buffers like this that Apple never used some quite obviously match PC Video cards (especially back in the ATI Radeon 5xxx days) and others that dont.... also I wonder who is the poor guy that has to come up with names for all of these LOL

granted if this "card" was meant for VR then i would expect it to have 2 HDMI ports (I hate how they do that in the PC space tho, are they not aware that Display port can easily be adapted to HDMI but not the other way round?) an AMD Reference RX 580 has 3 display ports and 1 HDMI port, the Pulse frame buffer is the first time Apple have released a Frame-buffer personality for a non reference PC AMD card I think :) (all the Framebuffer personalities for PC cards have always just been for the reference port layout)

You can fit 6 mDPs on a card like WX 9100, but not 5 mDPs and an HDMI in a single row. You could in 2 rows. So it would be an unusual card. If it was built-in to a Mac you wouldn’t think Apple would list the model number in the driver. I guess we’ll have to wait to see if Apple does release this custom Radeon Pro 580 card.

If they do, I guess I'll buy the overpriced unit even if my current card works. May never see another one ;)

If they do, and we are luck enough (Sapphire and Apple still use the same technique as the HD7950 to make the RX580 a Mac Edition card). Then we should able to easily create our own Mac EFI ROM for the RX580. That's nothing more than a simple copy and paste (especially for UEFI ROM)

I'd buy it too. If I had to guess on price, I'd say $399-599 range.

It might be a little more complicated than that if it has an unusual port configuration.

It’s not that hard “for them”, AFAIK, the EFI part assign the Framebuffer. As long as they assign Radeon Framebuffer in the Mac EFI, all card should work.

And in fact, they don’t need to do that. They just need to create a tailor made Mac EFI for the PULSE RX580 with specific Framebuffer is not a problem. Then we can try to figure out which card is compatible to that Mac EFI.

Of course, this is not the best case. But I really don’t think that they will put anything universal in any specific card. For them, it’s no reason to do so.

EDIT: The glitches mentioned below are only present with my old 24" Apple LED Cinema Display connected through a mDP to DP adapter. I just discovered that while connected to my main setup consisting of Sharp PN-K321 (needs a little hack to AppleGraphicsControl.kext to work in MST mode) and LG 27MU67 there are NO GLITCHES.
/*
Sadly it's a good example for another major caveat. There are very short full-screen glitches from time to time (see below). They do happen immediately when some visually taxing application is running, so they are not temperature related. Maybe it's limited to OpenGL2, I will have to investigate this further.

I have exactly the same glitches on Frontier edition while under load, had to to a slow-mo movie to catch it to compare. Exactly same shape, for like a frame or two, repeating every 10 - 20 seconds. On Windows PC using the same card/monitor/cable it works fine, no artifacts. The kext you mentioned above was to enable DP 1.2? Did you do it yourself or got it from someplace, I can't find it, I'd appreciate a link. But that just sounds weird, I would expect more people reporting the same issue, because it looks like you need DP 1.2, which is not supported on cMP.

I modded the PSU soldering 12V wires to the bottom of it and using EPS plug, so I can easily use modular power cables from other PSU's.

And reporting on fan behavior on Frontier Edition - my fan stays at 40% all the time regardless of load or the reported temperature, whether it's 25c or 85c it just runs at 2000 rpm. Clock goes only to 1400MHz and utilization is never higher than 85% when running benchmarks - on windows 1600 and 100%). On idle still same rpm, temp 26C, utilization 0%. This is on 10.13.5, so while the fan is audible it doesn't bother me, just a little of background noise drowns it, but I guess this is still a sort of high speed fan issue.

No the .kext modification is for re-enabling MST support over DP 1.2. DP 1.2 itself is supported when your card supports it. As far as I know this has nothing to do with the OS. I used my Sharp PN K321 (the first 4K screen that was publicly available) with a Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition card back in the day. I think with 10.9 Mavericks. The tricky thing about that screen is that it uses MST or MultiStreamTransport. That means that the screen is split in two halves and each of them appears as a seperate screen to the system and combining them needs support from the OS. In Mavericks and Yosemite that just worked but I think with some El Capitan Pointrelease they dropped it. I needed some time to find a way to re-enable it. In essence you open up that mentioned .kext and alter a string in a .plist resembling a blacklist of unsupported configurations for MST displays and suddenly it works again. I can write that up for anyone who needs the info on how to do that.

Hey everyone,
I'm coming over from the folks at tonymac and we're having quite the same troubles with the graphic cards you mentioned in the beginning. It seems like you did far more thorough testing – on the whole hackintosh sites I can only find the Fan Issue related to some cards but not a whole post that condensed all the information into one text. So thanks for that!

Did I get the fact right, that right now you'd recommend getting the Sapphire Pulse RX Vega 56 (model 11276-02) for both internal and external usage with a Mac because there have been no issues whatsoever?

For those still having fan issues. I suggest you go to this link. You can modify the AMD10000Controller.kext and change the fan curve.

https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/325120-vega-frontier-edition-on-high-sierra/?page=6

Now for anyone who whines that you have to modify the kext – you are just adding a property to the plist. There really is nothing major about this modification. It's simple as can be... I've been running this change for almost 2 months now and it's been working flawlessly. When you update the OS just keep a copy of the plist to update in the future.

Honestly, if you don't take advantage of this fix – then you probably deserve to deal with the loud fans.

Totally true, although if you can avoid doing the fix by picking a card thats better supported right away – why not do that? That's what I intended with my question – if theres a more hassle free approach I'd gladly take that.

That is correct. The Sapphire Pulse, Sapphire Nitro+, and PowerColor Red Dragon Vega cards have zero known issues (except trouble displaying over DisplayPort 1.2 or higher and the Nitro+ cards are too long to fit inside a Mac Pro without removing or modifying the PCIe case fan.)

Also, the Nitro+ secondary bios seems to work fine with the reference RX Vega card, alleviating the fan issue.
[doublepost=1530210286][/doublepost]Has anyone tested one of the cards with the fan issue in Mojave? Since Polaris cards are officially supported in the cMP for Mojave, perhaps they will also give support to Vega cards. Therefore, Apple may respond to a bug report for the fan issue sent using Feedback Assistant in Mojave beta.
[doublepost=1530211185][/doublepost]Some of us, including myself, previously reported issues with DisplayPort. It appears to be an issue with monitors that support DisplayPort 1.2 or higher. I set my monitor to DisplayPort 1.1 mode and now the Pulse RX Vega 56 has no issues displaying over DisplayPort.

Hello everybody.
I installed the AMD Sapphire Nitro + RX580 8GB Special Edition (the blue one) in my Mac Pro (HS 10.13.4).
By booting the LuxMark bench the fans of the Mac Pro that increase in revolutions are those of Expansion Slots and Power Supply .... is it normal or should they stay at the default speed?
The LuxMark bench is 12913.

I noticed that with the old ati 5770 the fan that increased rpm with luxmark bench was only that of the Expansion Slots and not that of the Power Supply.

I installed this exact card in my flashed 4,1 Mac Pro to 5,1. It works well, but the fans on it only run during boot (which is black screen of course). Tested and works in 10.4 and 10.3.5. I wish the fans would cycle a little but but they just sit dead after log in. So far no issues. If I boot into boot camp and use Win 10, I can change the SAPPHIRE Led color, but any changes to fan settings do not hold in OSX. Seems to work well overall, but I'm not a gamer. I only installed it so that I can keep up to date with Mojave.

That's normal, the card is programmed to "zero dB (fan stop)" when GPU at low temperature.

And you can only override that by editing the ROM image and flash the card.

By considering the Nitro+ is a dual ROM card. It's very very safe to do that.

In fact, I also edited and flashed my single ROM PUSLE RX580, to lower the voltage, make it run faster (no thermal throttling), cooler, quieter.

The tool is quite easy to use. All you need is just PolarisBiosEditor 1.6.7 and the latest ATIWinFlash.

Use ATIWinFlash to dump the RX580's ROM.

Open it by the PolarisBiosEditor 1.6.7
Screen Shot 2018-07-06 at 06.12.26.png

Click on the Min Temp. (C) box, then edit the number at the bottom.

e.g. Change it to 20, then the fan should spin whenever the GPU is above 20C. Which effectively make the fan always spinning (assuming normal ambient temperature).

Then save the ROM, flash it back to the card.

Now, your RX580 should has "always on fan" in macOS.

Great instructions! Followed them to a T and modified the card Bios with your suggested minimum threshold at 20 deg. C. Booted up in both HS and Mojave and fans are both still full stop once I log in. It seems that maybe the Mac driver kext is overriding the bios? I didn't think that was possible but it is true that the Sapphire's TriXX software overrides the bios in win10. It was worth a try though, now I know how to save the card bios, flash it, and reprogram, so that's something :) Thanks for the education!

Interesting, I didn't expect that, may be you can try change the Fuzzy fan mode from 1 to 0.

P.S. Did you click "APPLY CHG" after replace the 40 by 20? Also, did you re-open the modded ROM to check if that number is changed?

If you want the card run cooler. One of the good way to do it is to downvolt the card.

As you can see from my screen capture, in the GPU section, I modded the voltage table. That 1000mV at 1366MHz is not random pick, but using Wattman and quite a few benchmarks / stress tests to find out this is the minimum stable voltage for my own RX580 at that max boost clock speed.

Your Nitro+ should come with a higher clock speed and voltage. You may try to find out the minimum stable voltage, and then mod that table. Once done that, the card will run cooler in macOS, this can also effectively avoid thermal throttling when under extreme stress.

well Custom Radeon Pro 580 Yes for cMP? it seems not sadly

https://www.macrumors.com/2018/07/12/apple-blackmagic-egpu/

if I had to guess, this is what what the new frame-buffer is for but it still dosent quite add up as 2 TB3 ports = 4 DP streams not 5. so it would be to the OS as 4 DP+HDMI... (tho if you daisy chain stuff through TB3... perhaps you could do 5 Apple TB displays off of the thing?)

its especially interesting as Apple/black magic say this is a Radeon Pro 580 which up until this point has been a "custom" Apple "exclusive" GPUs just found in iMacs etc, it will be interesting to see a full System profiler dump if anyone does pick up one of these eGPU boxes :)

That totally has to be what it is. Good find!

Edited original post since that rumor is dead. Still holding out hope for a new Mac edition card or special EFI firmware update. :)

as I thought

http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/topic,13818.0.html

MVC got ahold the new black magic eGPU and indeed it uses the "Yelcho" frame-buffer.

best keep eyes peeled incase any more frame-buffer personalities show up :D
