Just to 100% clear it's the Squid with the 16x upstream interface and full size bracket for a MP 4.1?

I found a much cheaper alternative on Amazon (£96):
https://www.amazon.co.uk/SEDNA-Adap...id=1463954024&sr=8-1&keywords=4-port+m.2+pcie

On the US amazon site a customer mentioned that it works fine in a Mac Pro.

That's for M.2 SATA SSD, not PCIe SSD, quite a big difference in performance. And this is a x2 card. Even though you RAID all 4 SSD together, still can only achieve about half the speed that a single PCIe SSD can do.

But anyway, if all you need is just the ability to accommodate 4 SSD via a single PCIe slot, IMO, this is actually another good option.

Just one question, did those comment mention about if this card is bootable or not? The card works not necessary means bootable, if you need a bootable SSD, be careful when choose this kind of PCIe card.

Huh? M2 is just the socket type. The Amfeltec is M2 too? But yeah only 2 channel so not as awesome :(

He's right, the Amazon SEDNA card is not going to be anywhere close to the Amfeltec. The SEDNA card uses M.2 B-keyed ***SATA*** SSDs. Look down under Specifications:

> Supports 4 SATA-based B key NGFF SSD ( PCIe version SSD not supported )

The Amfeltec DOES support (and require) PCIe SSDs, which are considerably faster. Not to mention, each SSD gets its own x4 channel.

But it seems using NVMe still not a good idea on the cMP at this moment.

I thought the NVMe driver was good to use. Is it not? The only problems I'm aware of are

A.) must be el cap (gross)
B.) no boot support

Is there something else I'm missing?

If you check that thread, the NVMe driver is far from bug free (not minor bug, but KP or crash).

Based on what I have seen, I expect fit issues with the larger 1TB Apple blades and the adapters you write about. Looking forward to seeing the results of your investigation though - thank you for investing in the hardware to report your findings.
Yep. The lack of space between the m.2 slots is super tight and limits functionality. Ill know more once i have the board and adapters in hand. there may be m2 extender boards, but again the clearance is tight.

Has there been any further mention from Amfeltec or inquiries to them about this? I have a mail server w/ lots of users and upgraded from the stock twin 1TB mirrored hard drives to a pair of Apple SSUBX 1TB blades in a mirror for a massive speed increase, but this 1TB is running out. Would be a big help if Amfeltec spaced those sockets out a bit so I could get four 1TB blades on a single card. Otherwise, handheldgames, did you say in the SATA Express thread that a "fat" 1TB blade and a "skinny" 512GB blade can fit next to one another on the same side of the card?

Thx,
Fred

I skimmed the last page of that thread...a few of those people reporting KPs were running hackintoshes (hence the numerous questions about which mobo they were using).

Some have not reported issues. Don't get me wrong, I am a little nervous about it and it doesn't help that the author of the driver has been on radio silence for the past 4 months. But if it works, I'll be very happy.

Can anyone confirm that the M-key slots on this Amfeltec card also take B+M key M.2 ssds? I believe B+M is supposed to work in m-key slots as well, but I haven't ever tried.

I'm looking at replacing the SM951s with 1TB Samsung 850 EVO M.2 SSDs as I need the capacity more than the speed at this point.

Sadly I have to put my Amfeltec setup up for sale. I have a large upcoming film project that will require the 2nd x16 slot in my cMP for my AJA Kona 4 I/O video card, so I only have a x4 slot left which is not fast enough to run my Amfeltec card/SM951 RAID setup. And I need to move to large HDDs for all the multiple TBs of 4K media I'll be dealing with as well, so back to SATA RAID.

If anyone is interested, feel free to PM me. It would be the Amfeltec Card x16 M.2 PCie card populated with three 512GB SM951 M.2 SSDs (leaving one slot on the card still available).

Has anyone found out what the differences are between x4, x8 and x16 models? Fitting the card in a x16 slot is obviously ideal for speed but would it be possible to move the x16 card to a x4 slot depending on the use of other cards? There may be some speed sacrifice, it seems.

I assume you would be limited to the max x4 speed, which is around 1500MB/s I believe. That would basically be one of the SM951 SSDs.

Moving the x16 card into the x4 slot should work mechanically, but it will top out at x4. This is why I went with the x16.

In my current setup (3 SM951s in RAID 0 and one SM951 as my boot drive), the RAID is averaging around 4200MB/s and my boot is running full speed at roughly 1400MB/s. So with the x16 card, each connector has x4 lanes to take advantage of (if its in a x16 slot).

Okay, I understand. What about the other way around? I'm also wondering if a x4 card would work in x16 slot. I know it would work but speed wise what should be expected?

You can put a x4 card into the x16 slot, and the card should function as per its spec.

Hey, handheldgames, were you ever able to test the M.2-to-Apple adapters on the Squid board? Did 1TB blades interfere when adjacent to each other? Could you do 512GB + 1TB on a side w/o interference?

Hi guys. Thanks for all the folks who've reached out about acquiring the card.

After chatting with the folks at AJA, it looks like I can keep my Amfeltec card in the x16 slot and run my AJA card in the x4 slot without issue for how I plan to use it. So it looks like I will hold onto my Amfeltec card setup after all.
