What is the general consensus on Samsung galaxy tab 8series?especially 8+ and ultra. The dex when attached to the keyboard seems to be a game changer when it comes to tablet multi tasking. Much better implemented than stage manager.
is the app ecosystem so poorly developed on android tablets that iOS still has that superiority? Samsung offers comparable hardware with a reasonable support at a much lesser price point.
I was sure my next tablet would be a ipad m2 series pro. Now I’m really confused

The Samsung S8

The Samsung Tab S8 is a great tablet. I was in a similar position. I think it comes down to a couple or a few different points. Do you have a lot of apple devices like an iPhone and a Mac? Do you favor performance and graphics? Do you want a more polished interface with better designed apps? If the answer is yes to those questions then an iPad is probably a better choice, probably.

The Samsung will not sync with your mac or iPhone so you won't be able to answer calls or respond to messages or facetime with the S8.

In my personal opinion stage manager and Dex are compromises and might as well use a laptop if you really need that functionality. Neither are ideal but probably a slight edge to Dex even though it can be buggy.

Apps are fine on Android but they are still better on iPad. Depends what you do and how you use the device. Want to use Procreate then you need an iPad. Want to use most basic and popular apps Android is fine.

Now to the hardware. iPad is 4x3 aspect ratio. Samsung S8 is 16x10. If you use your tablet in portrait mode a lot then iPad has an edge. If you watch a lot of video content then S8 has the edge.

Do you ever use a pen or Apple pencil? Samsung includes spen which has very good latency. Again is content creation with a pen is a big concern then you probably need procreate. Otherwise Spen is very nice and included.

Performance and graphics are much, much better with M1 and M2 will only widen the gap. The Samsung uses the Snapdragon 8 gen 1. To give a perspective on benchmarks geekbench 5 the M1 is 1723 single core and Snapdragon 8 gen 1 is around 1200. Multicore the M1 is around 7200 and 8 Gen 1 is 3200. The graphics in wildlife extreme are double for M1 vs 8 gen 1. So the chips are very different and the Snapdragon falls way short of M1 and again M2 will only widen the gap.

All that to say iPad is ridiculously fast while the S8 is not slow. The S8 feels fast and Samsung does a good job for One UI/Android but in 3 years it's performance will slow vs the iPad which is overkill now and probably won't slow down any time soon.

Samsung give 4 years OS updates and a total of 5 years security patches while iOS goes longer.

Screen is brighter on the Pro and uses IPS vs Samsung which uses a TFT display. Both are very good. Both offer 120hz refresh.

Both Pro and S8 have quad speakers and both sound great with a little more bass on iPad.

Cost is obviously much better on S8 and if you plan on keeping it for a while resale value won't matter and Samsung has great trade in deals.

The only issue I complain about with the S8 is a lack of any kind of anti-reflective coating on the screen which makes it much more reflective than the iPad.

The S8 has a stronger build quality to me.

To me it comes down to apps, interoperability of my devices and performance. For my use case Apple is better but if I had an Android phone that would not be the case. Performance is better on the iPad specially with graphics intensive games but the S8 is no slouch and performs very well in its own right.

They are very well matched. However I know that the Snapdragon 8 gen 2 will be a much better chip than what is in the S8 and if Samsung releases a S9 next year and updates the chip that is the model I would jump on. I think it would be more future proof than this current model.

All that being said I really like the S8 a lot. Samsung does a great job with one UI. However they include so much bloatware and a lot of apps you can't uninstall or disable. The UI is good but not as good as iOS in some ways and better in others.

If you can get the S8 discounted and maybe a trade in too then the price gap between the new iPad Pro and it would be so huge it would be pretty hard not to recommend. Just know if you have all Apple devices you will have reduced functionality.

It is a really hard choice to make. I was deciding between the Air 5 and S8 and I am still not sure. I have an air on order but should be getting a promotional discount and Samsung already has the S8 discounted to $599. I could possibly get the S8 for half the cost of the air retail. It has better speakers, screen, but then M1, better colors, iPad is lighter and easier to hold and on and on.

Good luck!

I have the Tab S8 Ultra and the iPad Pro 11' (M1).

I use the S8 Ultra with the keyboard almost exclusively without DEX. The Android UI side is just more smoother and quicker. Samsung just pushed an update, that now makes it even easier to multitask with a taskbar. Nothing else comes close for multitasking.

Some apps are better optimized on the iPad. Noticed I said "some". The majority of cross-platform apps are pretty much equal. Also, Apple does have better exclusive apps. Although, this can be a problem for some, it's not for me. I already have my set amount of apps that I've been using on both platforms, and they work just fine on both platforms. But if you absolutely need a specific app, or you're an app junkie that likes to install everything under the sun, then the iPad would be best for you.

I do like FaceID better than the under display fps. FaceID just makes much more sense on a tablet, especially with the keyboard attached. On a smartphone, I don't care cause it's small and already in my hand.

Display quality and size aside, I personally don't think I can choose between the two. I do plan on upgrading the 11 Pro to the largest display size that's rumored to be announced. I plan on keeping the S8 Ultra for years (at least that what I'm telling myself 😅)

Speaking of S8, it actually just got a neat looking update to the UI/multitasking features:

This is kinda making me want one…

I just got the update 2 days ago. Samsung did an amazing job with the taskbar. And it's easy to hide and bring back, by long pressing it. It's to the point I feel guilty not having multiple apps on display.

Yeah, I honestly don’t understand why Samsung implemented DeX onto Galaxy Tabs. I can understand using DeX via an external monitor… but OneUI is just as capable as DeX (imo).

Definitely agree. Has the same type of approach as the iPad.

Lenovo P11 tabs

I‘ve never used a Lenovo tablet so I don’t know how diligent they are with OS updates and such, but those screens seem quite good for the price.
No, no.

I had a P11 plus and sold it to get either an air or S8.

Lenovo just sells the hardware cheap but the software is awful. You would think it would be like a Motorola phone. A nice clean vanilla android with responsive OS since it is so light.

The opposite is true for their tablets. It was supper choppy. Bugs in the settings and OS in general. Apps force closing. Updates that don’t solve any issues. Old security patches and unreliable updates.

After I sold my p11 plus they started to release android 12 just a week or so ago. It started to brick devices and now they have pulled the update.

On top of that they only offer updates for one OS update and then just security patches when they get around to it.

I would recommend you stay far, far away from any Lenovo Android Tablet!!!

A shame really as I have a windows laptop by them and it is great. I have had Lenovo/Moto phones and for the cost they were decent but the tablet has to be the worst software and software support I have ever experienced.

Here is a link to the tablet forum by Lenovo.

Wow, thanks for the warning! I guess there’s bound to be some strings attached to getting that kind of screen for $250…
If I can save one person from the frustration I went through I am grateful.

I don’t like talking bad about companies generally and I have had good experiences with Lenovo but there Tablet was another story so for me I will stick with Apple or Samsung for now.

I wish I could get an S8 with a vanilla android that is optimized and updated properly.

I hear Google is going to release a new tablet next year. I had a nexus and I think it was a nexus tablet when they put a quad core processor and it was one of the best tablets I ever had.

I have had Teclast and Alldocube tablets that even though never ever got an update ran far better with less specs than the P11 plus. It was almost like how can you screw up the software so bad? Like did they do it on purpose cause I think if they just took asop and slapped it on the device with drivers and did nothing else it would have run better. Lol

If I could get Photoshop or Affinity on my S7 I would use it a lot more than my iPad Pro.

Anyone know of any popular alternatives that can edit psd or ai files ?

First impressions are everything. I had a Lenovo Yoga and it was J.U.N.K..........never again.
I had a Lenovo P11. The FM app didn’t work as there was no FM chip installed. They allowed me to return it. It was an okay tablet but the vibration function seemed really stupid for a tablet. My Nokia T20 is fine for the price, especially when discounted.

Lenovo laptops can be very good. There is a wide degree of variation between models. Yoga laptops are great. At least the newer models. But we are talking android tablets which is a VERY different topic.

There are very few good android tablets out there. Nokia is okay but a lot of there tablets don’t have widevine l1 support so you can’t watch Netflix in full hd which kind of sucks on a 2k screen.

Honestly Samsung is the best right now. Even their cheaper models are good although slow.

I am hoping that the Google tablet rumored for next year is good. A cheaper decent alternative to the tab s8 without Samsung bloatware would be great.

For now the base model Samsung tab s8 is the best android tablet on the market and if you can’t afford it now then save up because it is so much better than the cheaper alternatives.

That is cool. I like how it has a built in speaker but I also hope there’s a way to adjust the viewing angle for using it while docked.

I’m not big on smart home stuff personally but it does seem smart of Google to give the Pixel tablet a boost by sort of consolidating it with those products. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes over.

Mine came with Windows 10 S, but I disabled "S Mode" which made if full Windows 10 home, and I downloaded the update assistant from Microsoft's website for Windows 11 and it worked. The PC was supposed to get a 'free upgrade' to Windows 11 anyway but I wanted it that instant, not a few days later as it 'verified compatibility'.

Still the cheapest Windows 11 laptop I have. Works well for what I bought it for.

FYI 'face unlock' on Android sucks donkey balls. It only allows you to use it for an hour after smart lock ends (smart lock allows instant unlock for four hours after you lock the phone in specific locations you specify, or when connected to a specific bluetooth device such as a smartwatch) and usually by the time you need to use your phone all that has expired and forces you to use your PIN or password (more for myself since my phone spends far more time in my pocket than in my hand!)

Couple that with horrible quality front-facing cameras on Android phones, which haven't improved since 2012, and poor lighting indoors and you have the worst face unlock ever.
My Nokia T20 has a landscape camera. Face unlock seems to work to unlock the device but only in landscape mode.

This looks pretty cool.

What sort of price point is the upcoming Pixel tablet rumored to be targetting?

In my opinion, there's greater need for an Android tablet that provides effective competition to the budget iPad (which I suppose would be considered midrange price point in Android land) than there is for a high end Android tablet.

^Some fresh news on that, actually. They‘re apparently working on a “pro” model alongside it, so they’ll be able to hit two price points.

I can’t imagine the base model will cost any more than the iPad 9, and I totally agree that’s the one they need to focus on competing with. Midrange Android tablets are still really behind right now compared to it…

It's incredible how much ground Google ceded to Apple only to come right around and have another crack at tablets. The problem is the app ecosystem is really lacking because of their strategic decisions, and all the great professional productivity apps are generally only available for iPad. I'm excluding Microsoft Office because I don't feel their apps are great on any platform.

There has been some nice Android hardware, but the software and apps are completely lacking. I don't think Google can ever catch up with Apple at this point.

I dont have a problem with Androids apps on a tablet. I think the vast majority will buy the cheaper device. Its only in here that the majority of people are picky.
Me i wouldnt consider an Apple tablet. My Wife told me she was going to get me one when they were a mere $20 off and i told her i didnt want one.

I would be very interested in a Pixel Tablet but its price that makes that decision for me. I can get a SS Tab S7 FE for $200 right now. Good enough for me.

I dont have a problem with Androids apps on a tablet.

Same here. I used to be very picky about tablet apps being designed specifically for tablet rather than phone and this is one factor that led me to stop using Android tablets a few years ago. But I've come to realise that its not that important for me (as ultimately I use it as a consumption rather than productivity device). Obviously there is still a segment for whom app quality is a big factor, but I think it's a minority.

For me the key issues with budget and midrange Android tablets is
A) Uncertainty about how long devices will be supported
B) Lack of options with secure biometrics

The budget iPad does not suffer from these issues and this makes it easy to recommend.

If Google can release a tablet that can compete on price with the budget iPad, can guarantee 4 years of support, can provide either finger print login or secure face/iris login (that can work with sensitive apps), I think it would be a compelling alternative to the budget iPad. Even better if it supports multiuser profiles and has base storage of 128gb instead of 64gb (both of which would be better than what the iPad offers).

It is less common for iPad apps to be stuck in portrait mode than my Nokia T20.
Some video apps are landscape only because that's what works. Some Android apps are not compatible with my T20 via the Play Store. Some iPad apps are poorly crafted by lazy designers but work.
I prefer the Android version on my Nokia over Samsung.
I can switch between Android and iPad OS with little difficulty.
Apple updates are superior to most Android.
My Samsung got two OS updates and probably no more security updates.
Nokia has flat out lied about monthly security updates.
I might get better service from a Chrome tablet but I've already been soured by Lenovo.
