Tim Cook's personal Thanksgiving version of "The March of the Wooden Soldiers"?

I wish one reporter would have asked a follow up question of Cook, when he said Americans don't have the skills to build Iphones, "Tim, are you saying you have no confidence that African-Americans and Latinos and Whites and Asians and everyone of all ethnicities that live in inner city America, have the drive and ability to learn these skills if you open up Apple factories in a few struggling American inner cities?"
Unfortunately Tim can't say, if we build the iphones in the US you're iphones will cost $2,000 or more. Why does one think manufactured in America has all but died off?
Timmy, if we could build the war machines to defeat Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, we can build your little Iphones,
Government funding is not the same as private enterprise.
come on Kara Swisher, I have confidence you can ask one tough question in your career.
Ask the wrong question and sometimes there aren't any more questions.

They would cost more but nowhere near your prices, some say as little as $100 more, others say $1k more, bottom line is I get it, we all want low prices, but have a journalist badger Tim Cook, come on Tim, you don't build them in America because you don't want to absorb that cost or raise the price of the Iphone, nothing to do with the skills of American workers, few people in the press make these tech companies uncomfortable.
Hmmm…. I really would love working in an Apple factory in the USA. Here are my demands to keep me and hundreds of thousands of Americans working in these factories happy. We want Hourly wages of $25-$50+ an hour, $50k- $100k+
plus a year In wages and salary alone!!! We also want QUALITY medical insurance for ourselves and families costing $400-$1000+ plus a month. We want at least 3 weeks of Paid vacation, and at least 2 weeks of paid sick leave a year. We want a a defined pension plan and a hearty match on our 401k to boot!! How about other perks and benefits like extended maternity/paternity leave. Child care/ transportation assistance etc. Supplemental insurance like AFLAC etc… and on and on.

So yeah…. show me how the math works out. The all in cost to keep an American 🇺🇸 happy working in an Apple factory will be easily $100k-$150k plus a year. Most of the folks working in these China factories are costing less than $10k to ~$20k a year per worker all in cost.

Anyone who's feeling enraged about the living and working conditions of the "slaves" in China should put their money where their mouth is and sell all of their Apple devices, and never buy another one again.
Let's see, how many will do that? Come on, raise your hands!
Weeping crocodile tears for the poor "slaves" in China, while fully enjoying the benefits of the work of said "slaves", is nothing more than sheer hypocrisy.
Yes, a lot of virtue signalling for sure. But Apple didn't close the cafeteria.

Stupid Chinese government. Just let covid run wild like everywhere else. At the very least it may help cut back the insane population some 🤷🏻‍♂️

The China Virus wasn’t that deadly to begin with, so I’m not sure how that would matter. The reaction is a psyop to condition the public to authoritarian control. Nowhere else is that playing out with more zeal than in Communist China. Disgusting.

For those who find it unfortunate that Apple is taking the blame for a vendor’s business values, please note that they are very well aware of all of the conditions via audit and that they turn a blind eye after being reassured by FOXCONN stakeholders that everything is under control.

Riots broke out on Wednesday at the world's largest iPhone factory in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou, according to video shared on social media.

foxconn.jpeg

Footage widely circulated online shows hundreds of Foxconn workers marching in protest, clashing with police and some being confronted by people in hazmat suits.

Some video captured workers complaining about the food they had been provided, with others protesting that they had not been paid bonuses as promised.

The Zhengzhou plant is Foxconn's biggest iPhone factory with around 200,000 workers. Foxconn is responsible for assembling around 70 percent of the iPhones that Apple sells, and it has been struggling to keep employees on site due to COVID lockdowns.

China's zero-COVID policy requires cities to quickly quell outbreaks through restrictions, and with COVID spreading in Zhengzhou, workers have wanted to return home to avoid being stuck at the factory should there be a more stringent lockdown.

Workers have also been unhappy with restrictions at the factory, such as the closure of the dine-in cafeteria, and a shortage of supplies that caused a panic.

Employee issues at the Zhengzhou plant could cause ‌iPhone‌ output to fall as much as 30 percent. Foxconn has attempted to mitigate the supply issues by offering bonuses and ramping up production at another factory in Shenzhen, but workers at the Zhengzhou plant have accused Foxconn of not living up to contract agreements.

"They changed the contract so that we could not get the subsidy as they had promised. They quarantine us but don't provide food," said one Foxconn worker on video shared online. "If they do not address our needs, we will keep fighting."

If you’re living in a country where you can freely spill your thoughts into the comment section here without fear of reprisal, stop and consider how much that means, and how much better where you are is than what people in China, Russia, or Ukraine are dealing with daily.

Gives a new perspective to thanksgiving and gratitude.

Seriously. I’m trying to imagine myself or my family working in those conditions—it’s awful. And for what? So Apple can make even more ludicrous amounts of money, and I can replace the perfectly good iPhone I bought the year prior? If Apple doesn’t start ‘voting with their dollars’ then I will. You’d hope it wouldn’t come to that with a company that talks the talk like Apple does, but the reality speaks for itself. And in the worst case scenario, the world doesn’t need an iPhone 14 Pro this holiday season, and certainly not at the expense of exploiting people.
But where are you going to go? Everything is manufactured in China. :/

I'm putting "slaves" in quotes because they are anything but. Or, more accurately, they are, but they are the slaves of the Chinese government, not of Apple. Those who are fortunate enough to work for Apple are having it much better than billions of other conationals.
I see what you are saying just to add every other gadget out there is problematic on some level - some much of what goes into electronics comes from China and other Asian countries can't match China as of now.

So sell all of your Apple devices, plus everything else you might own that's made in China. Prove us that you really care, not just at declarative level. Be the first! Set an example!

I'd happily pay an extra $100 for a USA made iPhone if it was an option.
Me too. But would you happily pay an extra $1500 for a US-made iPhone? I, for one, am not sure I would.
To think that all the savings resulted from having the production in China amount to a mere $100 is a bit naive, I'm afraid. Nobody would go through all the hassle just for that.

For me, it’s okay if something is made in China (although I’d prefer somewhere else, and try to buy elsewhere when possible). What I’m not okay with is the item being made in miserable working conditions. So if I did choose another device, while it would probably still be made there, I would look into the manufacturing process.

Your broad point still stands, however: China is not exactly known for the great working conditions of its manufacturing sector, and the other options may only be a bit better.

These workers will likely bring about changes because they are just damn angry about the whole situation. They are thumping the tub, threatening and making noise about it, but if they just were silent and thought "Well, gradually wisdom will come to those who are in this business and they will do right by us," that day would never come. Apple workers have a lot to be grateful for that these guys are as insistent as they are, but it's a block-by-block fight.
Being someone whose employer doesn’t seem to care about them, I can definitely feel their anger. I was promised much and given very little with the pandemic as an excuse. Now that it’s over I have a much larger workload and nearly the same pay as a result. I hope better conditions do result for these people.

If you offer a bonus, pay up I’m curious what the food issue was though. It says they complained about the food they received but also that the cafeteria was shuttered.

Has anyone given any thought, I wonder, to how those people working for Apple over there feel about it? If Apple withdrew from China completely, would they be happy? Would their lives improve?
I have a hunch that quite the opposite would be true.
But virtue-signalling rhetoric seems to be quite fashionable these days. Free the slaves, they shout, while posting on the internet on the very devices that those slaves have made.
