You can make an educated guess that if it takes them months or years to fix it they are either incompetent or it’s a hardware issue.
Yes, its clear...when they broke ios or macos updates, after 1-2 days they fix it, no matter how complicated was or not... Its clear here is a hardware issue (and they dont want another butterfly keyboard fiasco) or they dont care.

Everybody, please call up Apple support to make them take it seriously!
i was with them in 2018 with around 22 SN ( a lot of them , from their "in house" macs)
So , you can do that, but at this point, i guess its hardware and they dont want to acknowledge it if they are not sued like they were with the butterfly issue. Sadly the keyboard was a bigger issues for users around the world than this..so a lot of people ignore it and live with it

Apple: Hey we have a brand new laptop with new speaker design and pristine audio quality!

Consumer: It pops…

Apple: What?

Consumer: It pops…

Apple: Oh we will fix that!

Consumer: The previous model also pops.

Apple: What?

Consumer: Pfff whatever…will you fix the new one at least? Almost 5 months have passed…

Apple: 5 months ah?

Consumer: Yep.

Apple: Hey we have a brand new laptop with new speaker design and pristine audio quality!

Consumer: And what about the previous models?

Sanpete: It’s complicated.

As I'm going to be picking up a 16" in a few weeks, is this issue still present on all the 16" or just random? Either way I'm still going to pick one up, but I haven't really been paying too much attention to this sound issue and if it's every 16" and a design issue, or just some 16" are affected.

People will believe whatever makes them feel better, and lashing out is a is part of that for people of all ages. The facts, however, remain the same, that we don't know how hard a fix this is, or how much Apple is trying to fix it. All we know for now is that they claim it's a software issue to be fixed in a future update.

Those unable to deal with facts often lash out at those who point them out in lieu of reasoning.

Dont be surprised if after 3-4 years from now you will still get the same reply from people like him for the same exact issue. For Apple its an complicated issue. i hear these kind of excuses just from kids that dont own macs or they do but they use it to search facebook and not for work

Just picked up a brand "new" refurbished 16" running 10.15.3 and I wanted to verify that this is indeed NOT fixed at all. Still get "clicking" and "popping" when skipping around in YouTube videos. Sad... I don't think Apple will ever fix this.

I just wanted to reiterate that this issue still very much exists even under 10.15.3. It has NOT been fixed, contrary to many people saying that it has. I honestly do not know where they are getting this from...? The "popping" and "clicking" noise even occurs when receiving alerts, like from texts and emails. There's a "tick" sound that occurs split seconds before the alert sound. It is beyond annoying! Basically this "popping" or "clicking" sound occurs system wide more or less any time the audio engine is engaged or disengaged. When in a very quiet room a person with half decent ears can hear it OFTEN! When the system is set to a sample rate of 48 the severity is lessened, but still there. When set to 44.1 it is REALLY LOUD. This has got to be totally resolved soon, as Apple's engineers are starting to look like monkeys chasing a football. It is pathetic for this caliber and price of a machine to do this. Apple didn't use to have these audio issues before the T2 chip. I have owned almost every model MBP since they have been out, and this did NOT used to be a thing AT ALL. C'mon Apple! Dedicate some engineers to this, please.

Sanpete will tell you that you dont know what are you talking about
This issues takes time for apple to fix...for me have been over 2 years, but hey if sanpete knows better..its normal for this kind of issue to take months years to be fixed by the most profitable and technological company in the world

I hear exactly what you are saying and cannot get my mind wrapped around what is so hard to fix. I mean I think back to the "good ole days" of the MBP when there were no pops and clicks of the audio. What happened that has become so complicated that these high dollar engineers cannot code us out of this mess? If opening QuickTime and selecting "New Audio Recording" (without actually starting the recording) completely eliminates the issue, then you would think Apple's engineers could implement some sort of fix that changes the timing of the audio engine engaging and disengaging. And btw, I have verified that this silly little "workaround" does indeed completely eliminate the clicks and pops. This should tell anyone with half a brain that the clicks and pops are software related and seem to be tied to the audio engine engaging and disengaging. Now since this is filtered through the T2 chip these days, maybe here we are again with this dreaded chip causing more issues? Maybe the T2 chip is too complicated for Apple's engineers to code around? I do not know. But it is obvious that they keep biting off more than they can chew and it is beyond frustrating. When you spend near the $3k range on a machine it should be damn near flawless!

A refurb running the current OS isn't a new data point. Same hardware, same software.

I don't know how they are getting by with this and still selling these machines.
Evidently you don't, but it's not for lack of explanation.

Since the simple points I've actually made have been plainly explained here several times by me and others, I don't suppose repeating them again will help. Hopefully the lashing out is helping you feel better at least.

Please just stop. All you’re doing is kicking dirt on the issue and further weakening a company that’s already drastically backslid in QC. You must be invested in stock. Stop.

You vastly overestimate the effect of these little discussions on Apple. Among other things you vastly inflate. You may want to take you own advice.

Has anyone had a chance to test the beta of 10.15.4 to see if it touches this issue at all?

Seems some people dont see when people are ironic, and now they are even hypocritical
Its too complex this issue for Apple...it takes time...in sanpete time, this means years for us
