My upgrade was smooth and the system is stable. I've not incurred any stability issues which is a big plus :)

While I was hoping this was going to be "Yosemite"-"Snow leopard" it's not! I even did a clean install via usb stick. To many things still need work. Time Machine simply doesn't work right, doesn't play nice with MS Office (microsoft has said office 2011 users should stay with 10.10),Disk Utilities new interface is a major step backwards!,Side by side Yosemite default font is cleaner and easier on the eyes,Restart is slower,Just not as fast on older hardware (2010 11" air) I get the new beachball way more often,My fans ramp up slightly more often....need I go on and on.

While all the above might not be deal breakers, for me they were enough to go back to Yosemite.

That's a good, crisp summary. I've been reading threads this morning to evaluate whether I want to install 10.11. I guess for now the answer is no.

only major breakage I have found is with some imap email accounts in mail, they just don't work at all.. even icloud.

for some yahoo imap accounts I had, it created TWO accounts for each one that I had already setup and neither of them worked. I had to do some preference settings changes, turn OFF automatically settings finding, then turn it back on again, finally things worked. I don't really know why it would create a 2nd account for an account that was already setup in Yosemite.

I upgraded to El Cap from Mavericks. (I used Yosemite for a few months before giving up on all the bugs and slow performance and downgrading).

My observations so far:

1. The upgrade was easy and hassle free.
2. My MBP runs much hotter than it did under Mavericks (~50-60 degrees instead of ~30)
3. It's so much faster than Yosemite
4. Random lock ups - e.g. I'll click on a link in Safari, all windows become unresponsive for 30 seconds. Or I'll go to open Mail, and the same thing happens. It's happened 2-3 times in the last 1.5 hours. Will continue to monitor.
5. It's a little easier on the eyes than Yosemite was...maybe it's the new font?
6. The split screen is awesome. I run a secondary monitor, and now have it dedicated split screen to Safari and Messages.

Right now, my connection speeds are unusable (can't even listen to songs via Apple Music), I'm not sure if this is related to El Capitan, or another issue. I will investigate.

Overall, I don't think I regret my decision, yet.

EDIT: Is it just me, or is there a bug where if you minimise the Notes app, you can't restore the window unless you right click and select "Show All Windows" ??

I upgraded both my late 2013 27 inch iMac and my early 2015 13 inch rMBP and both have run flawlessly. Yosemite was a disappointment and I definitely ran into stability issues frequently (for a Mac), so I can easily say that El Capitan has been much more stable so far.

Even though the features that came with El Capitan have lower in number, what has come has been high quality. To me, this has been the best release of a Mac OS in a few years. I recommend upgrading.

disable system integrity protection then? you don't need to jump on the apple-bigbrother-walled-garden (yet) you know.

There are still features that aren't working within El Cap properly and it doesn't look like the developer is interested in continuing to hammer it out.

Am I regretting it? YES!

As I have to use MS Outlook for work, it is really bad that it does not work with el crapitan. I have seen posts saying that MS are aware of the issues, but I am very disappointed in apple for releasing an update that they knew has issues with the most prevalent office suite in the world.

Wondering if any of you who took the plunge and upgraded already. Do you have any regrets or is there any major app that will not run? I am just curious. I have held off from installing to see how many of you have problems.

If anything you use is connected by USB I recommend you DO NOT install El Capitan. None of my WD My Clouds drives can now be accessed and my NEAT Scanner no longer functions. This is BS!

^^^^Some MacBooks seem to be having USB issues. My Mac Pro and MBA do not. Also my ScanMaker i800, connected by USB is working perfectly.

^^^^So you blame Apple for a bug in MS Office That MS acknowledges and says it will fix? I don't follow.

Is this blame? I said I was disappointed. This means that I am disappointed that they released an update that was still having issues with some of the major software that is used on the OS. This is what the beta testing is supposed to find is it not.

The responsibility lies in part with developers as well, to make sure their software is updated to work properly with the new version of OS X. That's part of the point of developer betas.

Yes, which is why you should be disappointed in MS and not Apple. Blaming Apple is plain stupidity.

Huge mistake: El Crapitan is a huge POS! So many bugs but the worst is IMAP emails for my work server. After wasting hours to fix it, gave up. Currently restoring back to Mavericks.

Did they even test El Cap before launching it? Ridiculous!

For anyone who is having problems with Audio Plugins, or who wants TotalFinder or Bootchamp or other system customisations to still work, just disable SIP. It's easy and is no less safe than if your computer stayed on Yosemite.

I've had a few issues with El Cap so far. I don't know if I'm the only one.

1. After update, Mail app has forgotten SMTP settings even though I'm using Icloud Mail, so it's Apple's service.
2. If I zoom in during photo preview (the one you open with spacebar) pictures turn green (but I've tried it with just a few from the same camera).
3. I have issues ejecting external drives. It always says that drive is being used even if I retry forever. Drives only spin up when I press eject and are idle otherwise. I always have to force eject them now. Both drives are Hitachi Touro Mobile.
4. My OS completly froze for 1-2 minutes after closing Safari. I was already going to hold down power when it started to work again. It used to happen in Yosemite though, but extremely rarely (maybe 2-3 times ever).

All of aforementioned issues except 4 didn't happen in Yosemite.

Guys, is it because I'm old ? How many times this should be spelled out : NEVER install a new OS unless it's X.1 or X.2 !!! Apple, Microsoft -- you name it, no software company has ever been able to reproduce the real life check with their beta testing. NEVER. So stop whining everybody, and to you, MacRumors, I say : please, make a warning for every new OS, you do it for the buyers, WHY NOT WARNING EARLY ADOPTERS OF SOFTWARE ???? Life is so short, why should we spend it on some bugged OS ??? And for FREE ??? Let the people who earn millions clean THEIR mess themselves.

No issues so far on my rMPB.

I've held off upgrading my Mac mini as my MIDI keyboard and some of my Logic Pro plugins are not yet compatible with El Capitan but they should be fixed in the next couple of weeks.

Graphics drivers are missing for a number of machines with Nvidia GPUs leading to very poor performance (=completely useless) for Metal and OpenGL applications. A lot of macbooks are for example equipped with Nvidia GT 650M GPUs. Even the latest driver from Nvidia does not support other GPUs than the GTX680 from the Geforce 600 series. (see http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/92173)
