I upgraded from 10.10.5, had issues, subsequently have done several clean installs of 10.11.0 still have issues, with Apple`s own applications. Apple are simply pandering to the masses, I want stability & security first, 60 fps "buttery" smooth UI transitions are of no use to me if something as basic as Mail or Preview does not work.

Going to give it to 10.11.1 then will be rolling my Mac`s back to a working OS (10.10.5) IHMO 10.11 was released far too early in the development cycle. The worst OSX transition I have ever seen, I am of the mind that the less you use your Mac the more you will like 10.11, the more you use it, the more the OS & it`s bugs will interfere with your workflow.

When on the Keynote a new and "awesome" feature is the cursor growing if you shake the mouse, you know that Apple`s getting close to the bottom of the barrel...

FWIW this will be the first time I have ever considered rolling back OS X and that`s a long time...

Still on 10.10.2 on both Macs...not even considering upgrading until the issues with MS Office are resolved.

Which version of Office? If it's 2011, you may be waiting a while for any fixes now that they've released 2016 and 2011 is 5 years old.

It is not gonna happen... Microsoft doesn't support Office for Mac 2011 anymore. I am sure Microsoft is not going to listen your whines or complains. Sorry.

Both you guys are completely wrong. As was said above MS has released two updates for Office 2011 this month and released this statement:

So far Office has been stable for me (no Outlook & 14.5.7), equally I have spent so much time trying to get Apple`s own Mail to work without crashing, removing settings, refusing accept new settings without a full system reboot, all on a clean install. Other issues are, however not limited to Preview, AirDrop, System Preferences & VPN services.

The quality of OS X`s initial releases had been degrading over recent years, so in retrospect those incurring multiple issues with 10.11.0 is unsurprising. I just upgraded a HP Notebook from Windows 7 to Windows 10, without any issue, it`s 7 year old hardware...

10.11 is the best os i ve ever tried on this mac.
In terms of speed Snow leopard is still the best, but 10.11 offers the best user experience and general performance.

My personal chart:

1)El Capitan
2)Snow Leopard
3)Mavericks

ps: i m talking only about this "new" 2008 macbook air, not about ppc macs: i liked panther and tiger the most

How are you judging "user experience" and measuring "performance?" I think Apple knows they screwed up by releasing this too early.

it s my personal opinion!

A comparison to ios:
I think ios is every year less stable and filled with untested functions.
When i turn on old devices with ios 3, i think it s just perfect, totally tested and 100% stable.
now ios 9 is better than 8 and 7, but it s just bad. It s not "just working" as it was once.

Mac os was perfect and 100% stable (in my user experience) with Panther and Tiger.
Later every year i saw problems and instability, (some exception : snow leopard was better than leopard) untill now. I think 10.11 is the best os after tiger. it s not a fact, it s an opinion based on my impressions

ps: ios is still the best mobile os for me

No regrets here. El Capitan is a vast improvement over Yosemite on my MBP. It's like night and day. Sure they are some little quirks but compared to Yosemite, they are nothing.

If you desperate that isn't necessarily a problem. First make a clone of all your data just to be safe side. Download Mountain Lion from App Store Purchases, then make a Mountain Lion install disk with DiskMakerX. Boot into that disk, open Disk Utility and erase Macintosh HD. Then quit Disk Utility and instal Mountain Lion. Next you have create a new user, use same name and password as previously. Last you have to install all software and move your data from backups.

Its a lot of work but it could be worth it if Yosemite doesn't work for you...
The problem is that I have all my mails since 2006. And these would be lost.
And I can't reinstall e.g. Quark 7.5 on Mountain Lion, this was installed at 10.6.8 earlier.

I was dual booting Yosemite but have not found a reason to go back to it. El Capitan is great.
Word 2011 always crashes in El Capitan when I try to open my documents with clipart, drawings and MathType formulas.
And my Caldigit USB3 card isn't working anymore. For me there is no reason to upgrade until these problems are solved.

why mine is perfect ?
clean install ?

Upgrade, plus two clean installs, just to get basic functionality. For many the issues are real, and in some cases ongoing. Personally I expect Apple to get right first time, it`s not like they are dealing with the same level of hardware complexity as Microsoft.

Had Apple held off until these issues where resolved I wouldn't have had to waste my time, nor dare I say others with similar issues. As the .1 release has so far resolved the significant issues.

I posted in another thread that the 10.11.1 update was causing kernel panics. Performed a clean install last night and all seems to be well today.

I will note that the kernel panics were being caused by JetDrive Lite software but continued even after removing the software.

Did you perform a restore of your apps with Migration Assistent after the clean install of OS X 10.11.1?

Cheers

I *love* El Cap - it's Apple's best, most versatile, most intelligent OS ever.

The upgrade was seamless and I flow through my work day with it as smooth as silk! #love

In hindsight wish I'd stayed on Mavericks

So much for ive's great taste....

10.11.1 fixed my mail issues, equally they should never have been present in the first place. Simply subpar, Apple represents itself as a premium provider, unfortunately as few hold them accountable we can only expect more of the same...

I don't use Quark but it might be possible to copy its support files and preferences from Clone to clean install? Obliviously if it uses stronger than usual protection it will not work... If you have sufficiently old backup you should be able to copy Mail folders to clean install without losing messages. Unfortunately it's not quarantined to work since Apple changes Mail format in almost every major OS version...

Perhaps it's because you are not using the software that is being affected like others are having trouble with. Reading all these replies, i myself still don't trust El Capitan to be a good reliable software good enough to install on a power users computer. ( i have a 5K retina iMac with 32 GB ram, fully loaded to the max, and i have and use a ton of software and if El Capitan is having problems with mail still, i use that a lot and can't afford for my email to be down. I use 2011 office for mac as well as I see many of you are having problems with that as well. I need that to be working. My wife does have a retina MBP and well she is a new user to mac, but I may upgrade her's after backing it up first then see how it runs on her MBP. I suspect that it will be fine since she does not use much of the software that is being affected at this time. For now I will hold off for me upgrading until the next 2 or even 3 more updates in order for Apple to get their stuff in order and make this software work like it should.
