Last year I wanted to replace my Series 2 with the Series 5 in Titanium, but this model was not available in any nearby Apple store and I could not choose pickup in the store when ordering it online. At some point I decided, that my Series 2 was still fine...

This year the Series 2 will not get the update to WatchOS 7 und I am really looking forward to a watch with cellular option, so that I can leave my phone more often at home. If a titanium model is not available at the store I will probably take the stainless steel watch.

The issue with finding the titanium model in stores, is due to only certain Apple stores are designated stock the titanium model. For example, only one of the three stores in my region will stock the titanium model, mainly because it has the highest amount of foot traffic and it’s One of Apples larger store . So it really depends on your region, but your best option if you want the titanium model, is to pre-order.

Price discussion are always kinda moot. If most of the smartwatch buying public thought that a Watch at that price point needs to have a sapphire display, the Apple Watch wouldn‘t be selling as well as it does. And every company likes margins and wants to have features that entice buyers to go for the more expensive product. For the Watches, Apple chose body and screen materials as those features. Would you prefer if the cheaper Watches had slower processors instead?
It didn’t put me off buying the cheapest but still expensive aluminium Apple Watch on two occasions but I find it bizarre. It’s popular without a sapphire display quite right, but it would be nice if Apple delivered some kind of normality rather than deciding what is premium in order to charge higher prices. No I wouldn’t want a slower processor for obvious reasons, but then that is irrelevant to my point in the first place.

How is it irrelevant, though? There needs to be some sort of distinction between the cheaper and the more expensive models. If you don't want the sapphire display to be one of the differences, it needs to be something else. So what would you propose?

Something feature based maybe? They seem to charge a huge premium for Hermes faces when it’s simply a Stainless steel Apple Watch. Maybe actually use premium materials too?

The Hermès Watch at least comes with a very nice leather strap and also a second year of warranty; so it's not the faces only. And materials, Apple do: Ceramic and Titanium. The "real gold" S0 editions went to far, though. That was just a Jony Ive vanity project, I guess.

If you look at the iPhones, there are also very few points of differentiation between the "regular" iPhone and the Pro (and even the SE): mainly body material, the cameras and the display. For the Watches they chose the body material and the display as well. So there is some consistency there.

Don't get me wrong, I would love for the Aluminium models to have a sapphire screen! I'm planning to get the S6 Nike myself. But if I had to make a guess any feature based differentiation would cause much more of a backlash than the IonX screen. It will be interesting to see how the rumored "Apple Watch SE" will differ if they actually make such a thing. Plastic body maybe?

One option I would appreciate with AW6 is a more flexible choice of materials and features.

For instance I’m attracted by the idea of moving from my AW4 aluminum to an AW6 SS but I don’t want to be forced to get the LTE as well.

I understand that from a logistical point of view it’s better to limit the options available in the store, but I would love to be able to build my own AW as I really want.

Kind of similar to what I did when I have ordered my iMac a couple of years ago: ordered online with all options I wanted, then received at home a week later.

That would be a real game changer in terms of upselling IMHO.

You do get a very nice leather strap with the Hermes lol, yes you do but it’s not several hundred pounds worth. It’s a designer brand so by default it costs more because it has that brand on it, not because physically it’s superior. All watches come with a 24 month warranty in Europe too so that’s lost in some parts of the world.

I agree with the titanium and ceramic being premium materials, although I don’t like the ceramic personally purely on aesthetic grounds. I certainly don’t think they are as premium as the prices suggest but then again I’m not ever going to buy either so it doesn’t bother me. You’re right about the iPhones and there not being much difference between the standard and pro models but to be honest as long as with the phones and watches there is a sensibly priced option, it’s fine.

The Nike watches would be a good buy and my series 5 Nike has and still is great. The faces are the best in the range in my opinion and I’m glad Apple don’t charge a premium like they do with Hermes.

Thanks for the tipp!

We have 12 Apple Stores in Germany and, according to the web site, currently in none of those stores the titanium watch is listed as available, pickup at the store after ordering online is not possible neither.

The problem with ordering and delivery to my home is, that apple uses the worst of all delivery services available in Germany. For this company it seems to be normal to leave the parcels before my door, so that anybody could take it or I have to pick it up in some pet food with questionable opening hours.

No, thanks. If Apple does not want to sell higher priced products in the store I do not want to buy them. It save me some trouble and some money, win win;)

If there is I Series 6 in titanium available I will get it, just because I like the look. If not, I will stick with the stainless steel or even the aluminium one... My series 2 is aluminium and that is fine to.

I see Apple eventually migrating to have an Apple Watch store, where you essentially customize the watch band, the casing, what accessory do you need/want, maybe have an additional purchase for certain ‘watch faces‘ you could have exclusive, etc. I think that would create more of an experience for the user, but in terms of SKUs, it would be a nightmare. Also, it would make more sense for Apple to offer a store like this, if they also had a ‘round design‘, where the customer could choose between a round or square watch face.

But if you look at Pebble, When they were around), they actually offered something very similar to that experience, but they obviously didn’t have Larger following that Apple does, which eventually forced Pebble out of the market.

Personally I don’t see that as viable otherwise they would done it already. With 30 million+ units sold PA do you really think it’s feasible to sell them all customised ?

I sat out Series 5, as the always on display wasn't important to me. Definitely planning to ge the 6, probably in Space Grey this time.

Tempted to go up to 44, but all my straps are for the 40.

Customizable only when ordering online with home delivery or store pick up, while stores may just offer the standard models (same as for the iMac).

Why not?

I would spend more in this way, for instance premium case but basic connectivity or viceversa.

I agree with you that a dedicated store may be too much and probably wouldn’t pay off but the online options would be way more viable.

As to AoD, I said the same thing when I had my series 3. When i got the series 5, my mind quickly changed as I saw just how useful it was to me in that regard. I think your mind will change once you get the series 6.

As useful as it is it does drain the battery and tilting your wrist wakes the screen anyway. Having turned AOD off I can’t say it’s affected my experience with the series 5.

I also never thought I would ever care for the AOD then I decided to use it on a whim, now I can‘t imagine it not being there. It’s so useful for when I need to take a quick glance but my wrist doesn’t turn enough to turn on the screen. I still use tilt to wake though for easy notification reading.

If the battery Expectancy is improved, I’m in. That’s all I ask for, everything else with health, may or may not be applicable for something that I might use, but what I am looking for, is also the materials offered, which would probably still be the black stainless with the DLC, maybe I’ll consider the titanium, which I assume will return, with the ceramic being the ‘dark-horse’ again.

I use the cellular on my series 5 a lot. It comes in really handy and I like not having to take my phone with everywhere. It is worth the $10 a month.

This is what I am doing. I am going to be doing walks and workouts with just the watch so I don’t have to bring my phone.
