Well here is my Canadian iPhone story...
I picked up a used iPhone (week 39, 1.0.2 out of the box) from a guy on Craigslist. He said everything worked fine but he hadn't the chance to unlock it yet. I traded my Blackberry Curve for it. So I get it home and try to use anySIM to unlock it. No dice. I tried it a couple of times and it still didn't work. I then tried a couple of other methods to unlock but they didn't work either. I took the phone to a store and they tried to unlock and use a Turbo SIM and it didn't work either.
I tried virginizing it, etc but still kept getting a NO SIM message. So, I sold the phone on CL again as an iPod Touch. Guy bought it then returned it to me the next day saying he wasn't interested in it.
So I tried inDependence, iBrickr, and iDemocracy and none worked.
In the meantime, I was in the market for another one. I ended up getting a brand new iPhone from CL. Sealed in box. I used ZiPhone and it worked within 5 minutes.
I re-posted my old iPhone, again as a Touch. I don't want to screw anyone over. Sold to a guy this past Friday. Got an email last night from him saying he was able to get it working. He used the latest version of ZiPhone and it managed to work. I'm not pissed -- I'm glad he could figure it out.
As for my new one, I'm loving it. I'm on Rogers and have had no issues. I used to have a Blackberry data plan but this one needs the regular smart phone plan that would work with a Treo or MS-based phone. I switched over but wasn't able to get it to work. I called up Rogers tech support and they actually told me what Edge settings I needed to put in to the iPhone for it to work. He said they provide "unofficial" iPhone support because there are SO many iPhone users on their network. Anyway, it works fine now and I couldn't be happier. This is an amazing device.
Even with the sour-taste of my first iPhone purchase in my mouth I'm still very pleased. A friend of mine is a high-level director for Sony Ericcson and he said there are about 30,000 iPhone users on the Rogers network so they have no choice to support them. Sony has some new phones coming out to compete but in reality the iPhone will be market leader, especially with the new SDK and push email coming in June.
One other thing, some say Rogers is in no hurry to get the iPhone because people will just get them by other means, and the numbers prove it. Also, some say Rogers and RIM are in bed together as they're both Canadian companies. Who knows. I am surprised at how long this has taken Rogers to bring the phone here.
Anyway, I wouldn't wait for the official release. Who knows when that will happen. I'm on the $80/month 500MB plan. It's steep, but it's worth it to have a ton of usage up front than get hosed at the end of the month for over-usage which would cost a fortune. Also, someone mentioned that $7 plan from Rogers -- this is only for WAP surfing -- this doesn't work with the iPhone.
