I'm having the same problem and am extremely frustrated!
Been on hold to CPW and O2 a total of 90 minutes over the last 2 days.
Have you ANY idea how annoying their songs are? Especially O2.
O2 is prioritising direct orders from them - so for us who got it through CPW we'll be last in the queue. They should have done it chronologically.
Phoned them yesterday they said it'd start working by 9 or 10 last evening.
10am now and still no service. Called again they said sometime this afternoon after 4 ot 5.
Absolute joke!
No information, no apologies, nothing! Not like they weren't expecting this amount of sales - they knew what was coming and had at least 3 months to plan for it.
From iTunes activation problems to this huge delay in activation or services.
Pathetic! I'm asking for compensation.

Mine isn't activated either.

O2 have been completely useless at everything associated with the 3G iPhone launch

Just phoned O2. Absolutely useless - "maximum of 72 hours". Hmm, why don't I believe even that?! I asked if they were doing them in any particular order, to which I just got an "I don't know. I'm not with the team that processes them so I don't know how they're doing them."

Had popped into the O2 store this morning, and they said that it was out of the store's hands because all of their computers were still down. The assistant said that he'd been told that it would be within 24 hours, but it's obviously looking like longer now. He, unprompted, admitted that it had been a complete mess.

What did annoy me is that about 9.30am they told us in the queue that the computers were back up and running (after it hit 9am and we'd only seen one person come out of the shop with a phone), only to sit down with the assistant at 10am-ish to find out that they were processing them all by paper and I would not walk out with a usable phone. Had I known that, it might have affected my decision to stay in the queue and wait. There were various people, myself included, that were pushing their arrival time at work somewhat by that point, but I was quite happy to just stay later at work had I had my lovely working iPhone in my hands.

I just spoke to O2 just now and they said they can't give any guarantees but it may take another day or two. Starting to get a bit annoyed now...

have everyone awaiting activation been able to use their iphone?

at the moment my phone doesn't even recognise the SIM card and therefore i can't even use it mius the call function. I am worried my phone is broken?

does anyone else get the "No SIM card installed" message even though the sim card is in?

Got mine delivered from CPW this morning.... "no service" on the new number. Thank god i still have my old number until it gets ported over.

Yep, I'm still waiting for SIM activation, and even a mobile phone number.

They said they would call me yesterday, which then changed to 'probably today'.

Most likely Monday then!

As others have said, thank god I have another mobile to use in the mean time. One guy in the queue was getting it early just so he had a phone for the weekend... unlucky him!

i rang now

mine will be activated by monday evening!!! :(
It's unbelievable how badly O2 have managed this launch!

My other half and her sister both bought iPhones first thing yesterday morning from different stores and 28 hours later neither has a signal! They are both new contracts.

Mine is an upgrade and worked within 10 minutes of hooking up to iTunes.

Hope you are all sorted very soon. I know how frustrating this is. :)

It would be handy if people post again when they get service. At least it will be an indication that things are moving in the right direction.

I'm in the same boat as you guys, although most of my registration was done on the computer. It was only the very last step in which the contract was actually activated that didn't go through.

The O2 site doesn't look particularly promising though (take a look at the iPhone 'out of stock' link):

Customers new to O2 can start using their device once they have synced with iTunes and the phone account has been activated. When syncing with iTunes you may see 'Activation cannot be completed without service.' The activation of the mobile service for new customers will be within 2 to 3 days given the volume of sales on Friday.

By the way, if you slap in an O2 PAYG SIM after you've activated it through iTunes, then all seems to be fine and it'll pick up signal. At least you get use of the phone that way.

Ive just spoke to the local shop (Swansea) and they have told me systems just come up and they are just about to start back keying all yesterdays sales -- told should be activated within 24hrs....fingers crossed

nothing here yet .. 24 hours in .. to be honest at the start I thought I'd maybe done something wrong as there was no mention of it with the iTunes activation .. everything works fine except anything that's part of the 'phone' bit! .. quite disconcerting but such a relief when I got here and realised there's gazillions of us in the same boat!!

I'm still at a loss to know why we cpw mail order customers are affected. Our sims shouldve been activated in advance. I received mine at 8:10 yesterday - before o2's systems went down. I just hope this isn't an umrelated cockup.

I can't understand why the CPW ones aren't already done, they should have been ready for yesterday.

I just found my new number though, it was listed on the CPW receipt. Doesn't work when I ring it though.

My thoughts exactly... I have asked O2 but they say everyone's affected... O2 and CPW in store and mail order. Nobody can seem to tell me why that's the case and it's up to you whether or not to believe it.

At least we're in the same boat so I know I don't have a one-off problem.

Finally

I have just been looking over this thread in relief that it wasn't a problem I had created during the activation process, and I was just about to write saying I'm in the same shoes as all of you, just before I started the post I thought I'd turn off and back on my new iPhone 3G one more time, and finally it actually connected to the o2 network and I got through the startup texts from o2

So I'm hoping you all will be able to restart your handsets and finally get 3G coverage on your new toys

If nothing more the ball is rolling...

how much will be taken
