Considering where you live that'll be awhile. :D

Too much night life out there. :)

I mean, granted I use the most sleek cases I can find. I can't do a lifeproof or otterbox.... They ruin the whole experience. But I've lost more than one phone to the 'getting out of the car with the phone on my lap' mistake in the days of my 4 and 5's way too many times. This time I'm being careful. Annnnnd the night life out your way is still alive and strong..... We're just getting old.

I use a wallet type case and can't be without it. I call it my Japanese wallet. As it has my more japan based cards in it (ATM, hospital card, points card for a store, edy - kind of a rechargeable card, ties into my ANA mileage program as well). Keeps the other US related stuff normal wallet less cluttered.

After I bought my first iPhone, a 3G, I couldn't make up my mind on a case. I decided to use the leather belt case that came with my 3rd gen iPod. That lasted a couple of days. Then the phone flipped out of the case, landed on concrete, and slid about twenty feet. I bought a Speck case that night.

My job is brutal. Any phone I have now gets a case, and its always an Otterbox Defender. Between sweat, physical contact, and the outdoor environment, no phone would last more than a couple of hours with me. And contrary to what others have said, my phones look brand new when I take them out of the the case. Retired phones end up doing other duty around the house, so they get a new Defender. I now have both a retired 4 and 5 which are still in perfect shape thanks to cases.

Another thing I like about having a case is the belt clip. Instead of having the screen face the clip, I face it outwards. If I need to use the phone I just unclip it instead of unsnapping it from the clip. That way the rear camera stays blocked. The front camera gets a dot of whiteout over the screen shield. Can't do that if I don't have it in the case.

Finally, I don't like the shape of the 6s, not at all. I think it was a mistake going to the rounded edges. Too slippery. If I didn't have a case on the 6s it would have died long ago. Like before I got out of the store with it. Apple should have at least flattened the edge like the iMacs of the past few years to give some kind of design continuity. I hope the rounded edges don't creep out into the iPads and iMacs.

I think we all agree that plastic cases can collect grit over time that can scratch the phone, I've seen it firsthand... but does that also apply to the Apple leather cases? Experiences?

Ok. As of an hour or so ago I've decided to try my iPhone 6s Plus without it's usual Apple leather case. Will report back after a week or so!

I went an hour without my case yesterday for my 6s+ but decided to put the case back on as I was getting really nervous.

However, that hour of no case changed me ... forever. I'm strongly considering giving it another try. I used to be Mr. Caseless until the 6+ as in the no humidity California desert, the phone is incredibly slippery. But the 6s+ is a tad bit thicker and heavier.

You've helped convince me to try another hour or two :). Please let us know how it went.

Will do. By the way, I'm in Lancashire England. I guess not as hot as where you are! (Currently 70-75F in the daytime)

Yeah it's currently 97.8F where I am right now. Was 104F yesterday. :p The winter is what gets me on the phone slipperiness - no humidity and super dry = slides right out of the hands. At least my skin sweats a little in the summer providing grip.

You guys that have slipping issues with phones in your hands. You might want to put some moisturizer on them. Dry hands and metal equals slippery. Moisturized hands and metal equals some grip.

I always went caseless until I got a 6s. On that, I had an Apple leather case. Hated every minute of it, but the phone was just too damn slippery. Got an SE last night and am finally able to go caseless again!

What I'd like to know is that those of you that go without protection (lol), how do you keep it from getting scratched to hell and back from everyday use, assuming there are no drops or dings? What do you do when you set it down on a surface to keep it from getting scratched to pieces, and how do you pick it up so it doesn't slide?

99% of the time my phone sits in a business card holder. I have three. One on my desk at work, one at home and one on my desk at home.

The other times it's either in a side pocket in my pants, in a specific compartment in my car(s), or back side down on a surface with something under it.

If it's on a flat surface I leverage it up with my left hand and then use my right hand to grab it. In other words, I use two hands to pick it up.

I took my case off for an hour yesterday. Ended up putting case back on because I went to go jog at the gym and didn't want my phone scraping the plastic "phone/keys holder" area. I still want to go caseless so bad. lol.

When you go to a restaurant, where do you put your phone? Nice background btw.

My wife has always preferred a booth when we go out and we generally sit the same way each time. The phone goes in a side pocket and stays there. No back pocket. I generally wear cargo pants and the hammer loop usually holds the bottom part of the phone in (I always place my phone screen out, upside down). Since this is a side pocket there is no stress on the phone and it's protected between myself (it's on the left side of my pants) and my son who usually sits on my left when we go out.

If there is enough space to place it on the table I might do so, but usually on top of a place mat or drink coaster. I try not to put it on the table though. Would be very bad to smash a screen because I was not paying attention to where I set my drink down.

It's metal and very hard glass. It doesn't scratch as easily as the Internet, screen protector manufacturers and case makers would have you believe.

I just set it down. A wooden dresser, desk or table won't scratch metal. I don't set it down on a granite counter, cement, rocks, diamonds, etc.
They do accumulate micro scratches over time, but it's not noticeable. I don't worry too much about it. It's not a family heirloom and I get a new one every year or 2 anyway.

My watch and wedding ring have small scratches on them too, but I'll be keeping those a lot longer than my phone.

I did have a hard plastic case on my iPhone 4 that got grit under it (or didn't fit right) that scratched the edges and back quite a bit worse than any phone I didn't have in a case.

And that is the difference. :D

PS. I'm married with a 12 year old son and a 7 year old daughter. :)

My daughter was 4 when I got my iPhone 5. Both my kids have grown up in a house full of laptops and electronics and both have been admonished to take care of the things they have and watch what they are doing.

My daughter and son do not own phones of their own although they have laptops - which they are expected to take care of.

My daughter in particular has two speeds. ON - full throttle or OFF. My phones were never damaged because she was not allowed to play with or touch them until she gained some measure of responsibility. She didn't get her laptop until she could prove she was responsible enough to take care of it. I had a 3GS at one point, both kids were only allowed a specific amount of time with it, supervised and with clean hands.

Both my kids having their own laptops drastically reduced the risk of them reaching for my phone. Since my phone goes with me in whatever room I am in it also makes it very hard for them to get a hold of without me knowing. They also do not wish to run the risk of getting in trouble.

We have iPad Air 2s. They do not touch their mother's because my wife would go ballistic. She does NOT allow anyone to touch ANY of her stuff without permission. If they want to play on the iPad they ask and if I say yes, their hands must be washed first (I don't like crap all over my screen).

Both my kids had plenty of toys to occupy their time. My son has had a laptop since he was three.

I don't wish to sound as if I am some sort of hellion father, but I was taught proper respect for boundaries and to take care of the things you have. I have imparted that to my children.

PS. When I say laptops people might assume the latest. No. My daughter has an 2004 iBook G4 and my son has a 2003 PowerBook G4. Both recognize that using them is a priviledge and not a right and that priviledge may be revoked at any time based on their current behavior.
I don't think I can do what you do. I have a 5 year old daughter, a 3 year old son and 1 year old son. and my hubby still wants more kids .
I just find it too much of a hassle to have to baby my phone. especially when you're running around town with 3 kids. kiddos to you.

To be fair to you, we don't get out a lot. Had we and our kids been more active things may have been different.

Going forward I will definitely put a curved edge to edge glass screen protector at least. Good ones are barely noticible. It's pretty easy to take care of the body of the phone. However, the screen scratches over time for sure.

No case since the original iPhone - until the 6. Too slippery to use without a case, and also ugly. A huge step backwards, design wise. So now a case is necessary.
