Feel like it forces one to use the menu bar more than in the past...switching the filter between unread messages and flagged messages...sorting email by date/sender/etc...am I missing something? Even within the mail app, you used to be able to customize the toolbar to switch between different inboxes...that seems to be gone, too.
It's horrible. The toolbox customization seems to be useless too, as adr1974 says

For example, the trash/reply/move icons used to be on top of the sorted list of emails. You would quickly select from mails in that list, and pop to the top to delete, forward, reply, move, etc. Now those icons are located above the email window. And the same icons are located in the individual email window as a pop up as well. Counter-intuitive, since it suggests that the icon commands are for the individual email below, but in fact it is for whatever is selected in the sorted list of emails. And, it takes a greater mouse motion across the screen to move from a selected email to the icons. Who designed this ****?
You can customise the toolbar and move icons to the left of the divider. As far as I can tell they can't go left of the "filter" button, but they can go between that and the divider above the email list.

Sorry but I love Big Sur, it seems faster on my machine, everything seems to be working fine
I agree... on everything but Mail.
Some people above have been very detailed on the layout/UI changes that have been made, and how these changes have been a net-negative.
I, on the other hand, can't tell you exactly what's changed (other than me totally having to rearrange and dump stuff out of the toolbar so I can, again, see the Search bar)

Oh, and speaking of Search, it's completely broken for me in Big Sur. Everything I search for comes up empty, and yes, I've tried all the suggested fixes I could find.

Mail notifications/alerts/badges has gotten more synchronised in the latest 11.1 beta. They have for me so far, anyway.

As for search, I've noticed that despite saying "All Mailboxes" above the mail list, it only searches the inbox until I click on "All Mailboxes" at the top of the sidebar. Then it works fine.

How do you filter emails by sender as you used to?

If you wait long enough, it eventually happens. But searches that worked instantly before Big Sur now take many minutes.

I use GSuite so I'm going to finally give Airmail a shot. Been using Mail. Tried Spark also.

As Thunderbird has an even worse interface, for me the Apple mail client is the way to go.
Even though Thunderbird is not as "sexy looking" as other popular programs, it just works. I consistently see folks having issues with Apple's Mail program, no matter which OS. I'll stick with Thunderbird. It's not yet compatible with Big Sur, but that's OK. I have 4 other critical apps that will need to be upgraded for compatibility, but given that Big Sur already has issues (no surprise, given it's the first version of a new Mac OS), I can wait. Catalina is working fine for me, thank you very much.

Upon installing BS and opening the Mail I now have a load of Gmail archived emails that I had previously deleted, any idea of how I can go back to how it was originally sorted without me having to go through a list of over 7000 emails and redeleting the ones that I have and saving the odd few that I would like to keep?

I still use the 2010 version of Thunderbird on my Windows 10 laptop. Still works. I even set the font to Comic Sans (a font I always used for mail for some reason)

I need to find out a way to run Linux natively on my Mac, instead of via virtual machine. Doing anything the least bit demanding on my MBP via Big Sur = 90+ celcius laptop temp. Including updating apps via app store.

Restore mail files from backup?

Aside from the interface issue, are they any serious issues with Apple mail? I use for mostly for the mail rules. I have 60 or so rules that process my email.

I wish they would fix mail so you can turn off Junk mail filtering. Haven't been able to do that on any of the OS' is a long time. I don't want Junk mail filtered and for all mail to go in my Inbox. But turning off Junk mail in preferences does not do that. It keeps filtering it and sending it all to the Junk mail filter.

Thunderbird works. What version are you on? I am using 78.5.

Same with me. I always apply an update when it becomes available. Sometimes, though, the program updates itself.

Unfortunately, it's not yet compatible with Big Sur. But that's fine, as I have 4 other critical programs which also need updates. And way too soon to move to Big Sur.

TB 78.5 is working perfectly for me with Big Sur but I read that some people are having trouble.

Thanks for that information. I still have to wait until Onyx, LibreOffice, SuperDuper!, and Tech Tool Pro are compatible (and of course Thunderbird) before I make the final move to Big Sur.

V11.1 of Big Sur will be released soon, but I am still waiting to download and test Big Sur on a separate external SSD. I prefer if a few more of those apps are compatible before I do that.

FYI, my homebrew and macports is working. Also, my apache/mariadb servers worked without change.
