I'm on the fence regarding the iPhone 12 Mini (5.4) due to the very recent rumours for the 2021 edition (big camera improvements, smaller notch and higher possibility of power button Touch ID)

I'll upgrade if my OG SE fails OR the iPhone 12 Mini (also) has Touch ID in the power button and comes in rumoured blue or orange.

It's going to be a leap in quality for the camera no matter what, looking forward to it.

I have a 6s and was 100% planning on upgrading until reading more and more that points to next year as being the year to look forward to. My 6s runs iOS 14 extremely well. Most apps run flawlessly with only games and some media-heavy apps showing any signs of lag. I'll need to take a look at the prices for the new lineup and see how discounted the 11 series of phones becomes.

I'm also so used to touch ID (and yes, a home button) that face ID is not a selling point (especially in the era of face coverings) and I've never warmed to the notch design on recent iPhones. And this is a small complaint, but I like charging my phone and listening to music on earpods without a bulky dongle.

At the same time, I would love a nicer camera and be able to subscribe to Apple Arcade knowing all games would run flawlessly. It's just hard to justify spending hundreds of dollars (if not a thousand) for nicer pictures and a performance boost...

What about the iPhone SE? It sounds like it fits everything you claim to enjoy.

Will definitely be upgrading this year! Can’t wait! :)

iPhone 11 Pro Max 256 GB on AT&T.

Most excited for 5G support!

In the past on 2 year contracts, it was $100 to replace the battery and $200 to replace the iPhone. There was no discount on your wireless bill for keeping phones longer than 2 years so you were better off upgrading.

We alternated upgrades on the family lines so I always got the new phone and my parents, 1 year old and the 2 year old devices were given away to extended family (if still in good condition).

Nowadays, we do keep our phones quite long.

6+ -> Xr (4 years)
SE -> SE 2 (4 years)
7 -> 11 (3 years)
7 -> SE 2 (4 years)

Mind, we'll likely do IUP trade in on the iPhone 11. My dad wants to go back to a smaller phone.

100$ to change battery $200 to replace the iPhone ? Wow, wtf is that ?
In France it's not at all this, it's around €50 for a battery replaced (and free by Apple if under 2 years with battery health <80%), and if you want to replace your iPhone, you have no discount so it's more €50 vs full retail iPhone price ~€800-1200.

How can your phone be replaced for $200 ? It's for a new one brand new unused ? Refurbed ? Does it imply a new 2 year contract ?
I suspect the $200 price is not real price since the cost of the iPhone is also splitted within the price of your carrier contract, I'm correct ?

In France, 1-year and 2-year contract with carrier are old-fashioned since 2010 !
It's considered as scam you pay less day one but after 2 years you pay wayyyy more vs paying 100% retail price of the phone day one + carrier contract with no engagement duration. Because those no engagement contrats with around 50-70 Go cellular data/month cost around 10-15€ / month while their equivalent with 2-year engagement cost around 50€ / month (and the price of the Phone is a bit financed by this) for a 2-year engagement.

If i decide to get it then it will be camera related will see though what the event brings.

what i have missed is my Apple Watch more than anything.

I too have a 6s. The only current hardware issue is a failing battery.

Unfortunately mine is a 16 GB model, which is tight. And I expect it will not get IOS 15. And I'd like improvement in the camera department. And a larger screen.

Earpods? I don't plug anything in to the jack. I use Xiaomi Bluetooth pods. Perfectly satisfied with them and very inexpensive. Far nicer than having a wire that always gets in the way. I'll just continue with them.

Two issues that might hold me back. First, lack of touch ID. Second, paying for 5G when I live somewhere unlikely to get 5G within the life of the phone! Why, we have big gaps without anything at all - not 3G, not 4G and no available wifi. So 5G just feels like an additional expense for no benefit. If a 4G version were available, I'd go for it. Even if I have to wait a few months.

As previously mentioned, it was $200 brand new with 2 year contract. I think those were available until 2016 or so.

In the older days, US carriers didn't give a discount on service after you "pay off" your device. You're always paying for subsidy regardless so you're better off getting a new device every 2 years. I think my wireless bill was $240 per month for 4 lines ($60/line) back then. Even if I don't get any new phones, it would still be $240/month.

Now I'm paying $160/month for 4 lines of service ($40/line) with the decoupled service + device payment plans. I could go prepaid but with our data usage, need for personal hotspot and congestion in the area, prepaid or MVNO is not really something I could switch to. I'm actually testing Mint (TMO), Visible (VZW) and Red Pocket (VZW) right now and they just don't get the same quality of service as postpaid does. Plus the latter two have limitations on personal hotspot use. The good prepaid plans are just as expensive or even more so than what I'm paying now for postpaid.

Alas, wireless plans in the US are simply expensive compared to Europe.

I have just upgraded last week lol... My iPhone 8 gave up on me, well at least the battery did. I wanted to wait for the iPhone 12 release but just could not cope with the battery issues anymore. Luckily the iPhone 11 Pro was already on sale when combined with a new phone carrier contract. I paid almost 30% less then Apples retail price, so I figured it was a pretty decent deal and went for it.

I wasn’t but the zoom and camera improvements has sucked me in...and well i miss the Apple Watch.

I'm on a 6s plus. I bought the 11 last year and I returned it. Among other things I didn't like not having touch ID.
I replaced the battery on my 6s a year ago and so far it's holding ok. I'm hoping for a SE plus next year or the 13 if it has Touch ID and smaller notch

Rumor on YouTube video by EverythingApplePro is that the 2021 iPhone will have a smaller notch, but not from left to right, but from top to bottom, and touch ID in screen could happen, Apple has/or is applying for a patent for that technology.

I think I said in this thread, I'll wait for 2021 to see if they do a 1TB version, in the 6.7 Inch Pro Max, I don't think I have 5G in my area, I'm in a small town in NY, near Albany(NYs capital), but it was years before T-Mobile or Sprint got 4G here, where Verizon and ATT(my current carrier) had it much earlier.

No, I’ll be keeping my 11 pro
may get my daughter the pro max, she takes tons of great pics

I likely won't since they won't come with the 120Hz refresh rate this year and will wait for the 2021 model. But will try to upgrade from the iPhone Xs to the 11 Pro if I can get a good deal and trade-in value.

What device do you have, and why are you not planning on upgrading?

I am thinking of buying an SE 2020 and just sticking with that for at least a year or so.. cheap, affordable and does the job.

Interested in iPhone mini if it is 5.4 inch phone & edge2edge display. Prefer smaller notch & fast processor. Fall for Galaxy Fold last year instead of iPhone 11 Pro.

I may upgrade. I need a phone with better cell signals and the xs is not great. But I really would like Touch ID in the button. If they make that happen this year, I’ll upgrade, otherwise I’ll probably put up with the xs for another year.

I’ve been debating back and forth but decided that I’m not going to upgrade this year. I currently have a 11 Pro Max that I own outright for the first time. I will wait for the 2021 model and buy outright again. I like owning my phone and prefer to purchase every other year rather than continuously give Apple my money every year for modest upgrades.

There was time when most people use to upgrade their phones each year even with the modest upgrades in iPhones. But now I am seeing this trend is changing, people have become more thoughtful about how they spend & how the new product will benefit them from the one they already own. But still some people including myself 😁 are impulsive buyers, when they watch Apple event and watches new iPhones even with incremental upgrades they still buy it. 😍

Why don’t you wait to have that debate until after the presentation? I know it sucks because it seems like the leakers didn’t leave anything to be surprised about. But I’m hoping for that one more thing...

And that right there is the only reason you need. Qualcomm modems. Better connectivity. Also battery life. Anything after the 2018 XS series has legit battery life.
