Regretting gold.

Comparing it to my white X, it doesn't feel as nice in the hand.
The chrome on the white one feels much more smoother and like you're actually touching metal whereas the gold frame on the XS feels "sticky" and doesn't feel metallic but more rubber like...almost as if I've got a case on it.

Plus, it’s a fingerprint magnet, after hold the phone for a few minutes the frame just looks dirty.
Whereas the chrome frame on my X remains shiny and fingerprint-less.

Actually, if even the glass feels smoother on the white X.

Anyone else noticed this, or is there something wrong with my XS?

Same here. Went from a silver X to a gold XS and absolutely hate how this new phone feels in my hand. It feels grippy and as if it were made of plastic, and not sleek and metallic as one would expect. Plus whatever they've put on the band to make it feel that way attracts smudges and fingerprints like crazy, causing it to look dull instead of shiny. I'm gonna exchange it for a silver one, I think. I paid too much money to not be 100% satisfied.

As I've said before silver is the best iPhone hue to me..it's bright yet classy and matches anything u put on it.

It definitely is. I had a Silver X, then got bored of it, but now I love the Silver Xs Max again after experimenting with the hideous Gold color.

The powder-coated band is way better feeling than my previous silver X. That was very slippery, and had scratches literally all over it after a few months- even though I kept it in a case all the time. This one seems more durable and I like the feel of it. YMMV.

Like you, I went from a silver X to a gold XS but I'm personally not a fan of how this gold coat feels on the phone. It feels sticky, as it it were made of rubber or plastic. I prefer the slippery metallic feel of my silver X. Plus this new coating on the band causes it to smudge a lot, making it look dull instead of shiny.

May I ask where you heard the gold band is powder-coated? Does it eventually go away or will it always feel like this? Is this only on the gold phones or have they added this to the silver and space gray models as well?

Thanks!

I went from a silver X to gold XS and I, too, am considering switching back to silver. The gold does looks nice IMO but comparing the two side-by-side... there's just something about that white/silver that looks so fresh and modern.

Also, did your gold phone feel weird? Particularly the gold stainless steel band. Mine feels rubbery/sticky and that's putting me though it. I've noticed others have said the same but I'm curious if this is the case with all the gold phones or just a few "defective" ones.

I enjoy my XS Max in gold very much. For now I got the standard black apple leather case. I think the combo of black and some gold, makes it look very classy. Also ordered a clear frosted totallee case though.

I purchased a Gold colored XS this time because I wanted to try something different. However finding a nice case to go with it is a pain in the butt. Now I wish I would have gone with ol reliable Space Gray. Anyone else feel the same? My other option is just grabbing a black case and dumping it into that one.

The answer is not to use a case. I got the gold XS and I never uses cases on my phones, why destroy the beauty of the phone?

Picked up my Gold XS Max on Friday, loving it so far. I love the brass/copper look of the band, and the more subtle color on the back. Doesn’t seem extremely flashy or in your face, but maybe that’s just me. I can also see why some are saying the back looks pink, and I agree in certain lighting, but as a guy, I have no issues. I think the color looks great.

Previously I had a Space Gray 6+, and then a Jet Black 7+. Really liked both of those, especially the 7+, but was ready for something new. The Silver and Space Gray XS phone look good, but I liked that the gold looked a little different or unique.

As with my 6+ and 7+, I don’t plan on using any case or screen protector. I used those for 2 years each, and both looked like new when I sold/traded them in. Considering getting Apple Care just due to the fact that the back is glass on this one, but I likely won’t, as I’m extremely careful with my phones.

Unfortunately for me my occupation doesnt give me the luxury of using ny phine without a case. I mean I could get insurance for it I suppose, but a case is cheaper.

Hate gold. 1. it's such an ugly color. 2. it literally looks like poop with a clear case on, poop or dirty. 3. it's so old fashioned.

Gold is ugly but Apple Gold version of IPhone XS Max is just amazing.

I had the iPhone X Silver so don’t want to feel like I am using the same phone.

I am using a spigen clear case now. Waiting for my slickwraps and Dbrand skins and the new k11 bumper in gold.

gold phone is nice. no way feminine, toss that gender comparison out thanks... this **** getting old and dated, in fact i can say it's masculine since its bold/striking.

sidenote this was the gold i wanted, apple's previous gold was too Yellow, rose gold was too pink for my liking and the iPhone 8 Plus Gold was abit funny tbh, but a better improvement over the YellowGold in the iPhone 6/6s/7

I got the Gold Xs Max because it looked great in photos and now it's better in person. But the clear case I bought doesn't do it any justice. I wish I could go naked but even with my cautious tendencies, I've dropped just about every phone I've had since the iPhone 4. The thin rubber cases I've had always protect it from damage, even when dropped on concrete. So even with the nice gold color, I got a new black case like I've had on previous phones. If they can make a case that matches the gold color of the iPhone Xs, then maybe I'll buy it.

unless you are getting a clear case... what's the big deal? you're covering up all the gold (unless you buy an apple case that leaves a tiny bit open on the bottom....???????

AND.... apple's forest green leather case would be a perfect compliment to the gold phone (after seeing it in person... I wish i'd chosen that color! it's gorgeous!

Well it DEFINITELY looks like a chicks phone in the green case. Something an old Jewish lady would have next to her virgins slims

To each his own, I’m not judgin. GO PATS!

I have had the XS in gold for a few days. My thoughts:

The band is simply stunning. Someone on Twitter called it 'deep gold'. I agree. Very bronzy, coppery. Not ostentatious. Understated and classy are the best words I can think of.

The powder-coated band is way better feeling than my previous silver X. That was very slippery, and had scratches literally all over it after a few months- even though I kept it in a case all the time. This one seems more durable and I like the feel of it. YMMV.

Regarding 'guy colors', that's dumb. Buy whatever color you like. You're paying for it, who cares what anyone else thinks.

All that said, the back is causing me to consider exchanging it for a SG model. The color of it is all over the place. As others have said, it goes from shiny gold, to creamy white, to what I've taken to calling 'maple'. That's all fine. I like all of those colors. However, the other color it looks like, and the one it looks like to me most often, is pink. Not blush, or copper but accidentally-washed-a-red-shirt-in-white-laundry pink. Strawberry pink? I don't know exactly, but it's not a color that I like. If you like that color, you'll like this phone. If not, just a warning. For me this color is the one I see 90% of the time.

That's my $0.02 after two days.

See this is what worries me. I was thinking about switching my silver (when it gets here) for the gold. I liked the gold when I saw it the Apple store - thought it was real pretty, but I know that was under store lighting. Like you, I don't mind all the other color references you listed that it looks like, but if it looks like the accidentally washed a red shirt in white pink, that's a no...

I got the silver which is really just basically white but FWIW, I just got back from the apple store again and played with the "gold" for the first time and yeah, it was definitely more pink than it was anything close to gold. It seemed like a very washed out pink. I picked it up to turn over and actually thought I accidentally picked up a rose gold 7 Plus or something until I looked at the camera bump. Just my 2 cents.

I disagree. My wife just updated from a rose gold 7 to a gold XS. Not even close to in color. Very light back with some copper tones on the edges.

Its all about how the light hits the surface..that's another reason I stick with the silver in any lighting it looks just about the same very little variance...with the gold it can look anywhere from bronze/copper/good/pinkish with silver it looks either whitish/grey/silver..very neutral colors that match anything.

Headed to MOA to exchange my “Gold” and get the silver and they actually have inventory. So yeah! I just don’t like this gold at all.

Because destroying the actual phone in this case is way too expensive to be that risky. In any other situation I would agree, but I'm all about not giving apple anymore money than in necessary seeing that their products are already more expensive than their competition. I don't have AppleCare either as i've never needed it but that's just me.

I love it, it's unique. My friend's said it was "basic," I said "IDGAF." I'm the one using this and I like the way the gold color looks. Don't regret it for one second!
