I adopted it fully but I still do not like it. My family tinkered around with my phone for a few days and decided not to upgrade at this time.

Maybe it gets better with updates.

as has been pointed out repeatedly, you can run your iphone just as you did in ios 13... and have options if you want to use them (widgets, app library, etc).

And as pointed out repeatedly the reasons why all this duplication pis*es many people off just by knowing it’s there!

Now that the widgets can be placed anywhere on the home screen, the Today view will slowly lose its purpose. I've only got one widget there, and that's because the app in question hasn't yet been updated for iOS 14. When they update it I won't even have that one, so I'll be stuck with a useless, empty screen, which I won't be able to hide.
So why isn't anyone moaning about that? Twenty-five pages of childish complains about how people's lives have been ruined just by knowing about the App Library, even if they don't see it, while an even less useful screen in the other direction, which also cannot be hidden, doesn't bother anyone. Ironic, or what?

what's your point? i mean, the today screen is there, i never use it, but am not having a meltdown about it. i'd like the names hidden under widgets (i KNOW it's my calendar, or the weather), but i can't.

apple does what it chooses to do, and we adapt. complaining (endlessly) changes nothing...

Doubtful Apple ever changes it... no matter how much haters complain. It's just a fact of life.
Agreed

No meltdown. Just don’t like it being there. End of.

When your app in question has been updated, why not put it again in Today view?
And: People will always put widgets in the today view because it is better to swipe once than swipe through pages of pages of widgets. Starting from main homescreen of course.

Typically you hold the phone with one hand and interact with the other. Typically I don't.

What I mean is I both hold it and interact with it with my dominant hand only. My right hand holds the phone and my right thumb interacts with the screen. I only ever touch the phone with my left hand when I’m typing or on rare occasions when my right hand is already occupied with something I can’t put down.

I could be mistaken but I believe this is actually how most people hold their phone. That’s why Apple put the alphabetical navigation on the right side of the screen, so it’s easily accessible with one hand.
Interesting. Being left handed I hold the phone in my right hand and usr my left index finger to navigate. Typing is done using both thumbs.

Been with iPhone since the start. It’s not the lack of options that’s a problem. It’s adding options with no way to disable it. That’s the problem.
Like "Bixby" on Samsung phones with it's own "special" button?

Used to hate it, but now I love it. Just put essentials shortcuts on one page and the rest that's rarely used on the app library. No more JUNK folder needed. I wish it was more like android's app library though. No categorization, just put the whole icons in 4 columns for easy finding.

I didn’t go through all 25 pages so apologies if it’s been mentioned before but... why the hell is the TestFlight app not in the TestFlight folder? Boggles my mind.

I know, I know it’s on the developer to categorize it but still...

Hopefully the updates correct this mess
Some people not liking or caring for a feature doesn't make it a mess or something that is broken. There can potentially be improvements and/or tweaks that can be made and might come along, but that's fairly different.

If the automatic groupings were customisable, then they wouldn’t be automated. Plus they would just be like the folders on the Home Screen if they were customisable, which is not the purpose of the library. Glad you have your own way to use your phone that works for you.
This. The idea of app library is that it is able to tell which apps you use more commonly and automatically surface them as needed (by making them larger icons that you can tap on directly without needing to open a folder first). I assume as if you start using another app in favour of it, the app layout will then be updated accordingly.

Being able to decide what apps go where would defeat the whole point.

One could reasonably argue that the TestFlight app is a utility, and that the TestFlight folder within the App Library is meant to contain apps that are currently being tested via the TestFlight process.

And, if you look closely, you'll find that the TestFlight app is, in fact, (wait for it...) in the utility folder within the App Library.

I have TestFlight installed and beta apps yet I have no App Library TestFlight folder.
Go figure!

Is this the reason this is happening? If so, that makes perfect sense. When the App Library first appeared, my dating apps were in the column one, row three. After using Bumble daily, the folder is now column two, row one. I just figured the App Library was fluid on its own. I didn't realize there was a reason for the movement. Thanks for the information.

How much do you have to use an app for it to show up in the larger icon vs. a folder? I have used a bunch - single one only - in a library and it hasn't moved it to the big icon?

I'm not sure it's a matter of "how many times your use it" as opposed to how often you use it relative to other apps in that category. If you have 4 apps in that App Library folder and use them equally, one will, obviously, not get the 'big' icon... not sure how that algorithm works.

I’m disappointed with the App Library. It could have been really good.

Most people will keep their most used apps on their home screens.
But those same commonly used apps are what get promoted in App Library.
Why suggest Phone in App Library when it’s on my first screen, for example.

I had hoped there would be a toggle in App Library to view only apps not on a screen.
Then I could use my home screens as usual for commonly used apps.
For seldom used apps I could go to App Library without also seeing all of the apps on my home screens.
Then for any given app it’s either in App Library or a Home Screen but not both.

The other customization options you folks have suggested would definitely be an improvement also.

I really wanted to like it. It just disappoints me that such a major new feature is of no value to me.

Enjoyed reading everyone’s thoughts!

So, it disappoints you because you cannot configure it the way you can your home screen? Why not just use the home screen and ignore the App Library? Everyone wants to complain about it, but they seem to be absolutely incapable of just ignoring it...

Yes but one could also reasonably argue that TestFlight apps are downloaded from the (wait for it...) TestFlight app and should be combined. Just going by the meaning of a utility, any app can be categorized as a utility, really.
