Maybe ( but doubtful) Apple will explain it better at the iPhone 12 event ( hopefully)

I rewatched the last WWDS video. There is a section on this feature where Craig F explains why and how it is useful. If you are a power user, the reasons don’t really float. the typical Apple users don’t hang out here.

Been with iPhone since the start. It’s not the lack of options that’s a problem. It’s adding options with no way to disable it. That’s the problem.
Here’s a story.

In 2018, Apple introduced Dark Mode to macOS with Mojave. They offered a convenient option to override Dark Mode in Maps and continue to use the light map even with Dark Mode enabled, as opposed to the (visually atrocious, but better than it used to be) dark map. In 2019, Apple introduced Dark Mode to iOS (as well as “iPadOS,” which is still iOS) and did not offer the same option to override the system appearance in Maps.

I did not create a >20-page MacRumors Forums thread to whine and yell about it. Rather, I submitted an enhancement request on their bug reporter that has yet to be acted upon. That’s fine. I have still not created a >20-page MacRumors Forums thread about it or, in fact, even expressed my desire to have this same option on iOS because Apple isn’t known to routinely check these forums for feature ideas and bug reports. Incredibly, my life has gone on more or less as usually as can be expected, even though Apple has not yet added this option as I requested.

Is there any method to which apps appear here:

, as opposed to the apps which appear here:

, or is it just random?

Interesting watching the by-play between posters.

I suspect some of the nay-sayers are like me and use both Android and iOS.
Wish I could combine the two for the best of both worlds ;)
Imagine... Having App Button, and being mature enough to admit it's elegant and worthy of cloning 😀

Wish I could agree with this, but the categories are too random; can’t predict what folder any particular app will be in. Better off searching for it.
My point being that instead of being hidden in pages of my folders, the seldom used app is instantly located via the App Library alpha list.

Dairy Queen only lets you order vanilla with nuts. You can no longer order it without nuts even though you don’t like nuts, or are allergic.

One would like the option not to have the nuts.
Nope.
Dairy Queen gives you some extra nuts on a plate. You can ignore them and eat your plain vanilla cone if you so wish.
You're moaning that you don't want to see that plate on your table at all, because it somehow breaks the feng shui of your table just by being there.

I am just looking forward to further development of the App Library, from Apple.
Surely, they will, right?
- Folder name choices
- Folder order choices
- Option to place apps in an organization folder of our choice

But, we all know Apple's track record. So, there's that...

So, basically what you already have on the Home Screen... 😂 Another person that doesn't get what the point of the App Library is, as they're not the target audience for it.

I struggle with “seldom used”.
Currently seldom used are on my last Home page in one or two folders on that last page.
Why on Earth would I put them anywhere else?
I'm happy you have a system that works for you. As for me, I'm happy to be done with pages and folders and swiping and having to decide where to put something like EvaluationKIT that I only use the last week of the semester in my online courses.
I love the simplicity, the decluttering, and the reduction in mental overhead.

It's taking me a little while, but I am starting to embrace the App Library. I've got apps I rarely use but need to keep around. No need for them to take up a home screen spot, even in a folder. I'm more than happy to let Apple organize these kinds of apps in the App Library. I'd love to get out of the folder organization business. If the app developer is able to provide organizational 'hints' to Apple that would aid in Apple's grouping that would probably improve things a bit. But honestly, it's pretty decent already, and any app I truly care about also lives on the home screen somewhere.

Edit to add: as I think more about it, it's like macOS. I see the App Library kind of like the Applications folder, but with subdirectories. Imagine if every new app was installed to the Desktop. It would be horrible. Apple did that with iOS and is probably now trying to 'fix' that.

For the umpteenth time, you can already name folders, order your apps and place apps in the folder(s) of your choice... on the home screen. #notRocketScience

It's recently used/commonly used at the time of day, like Siri Suggestions, from what I recall.
I was thinking the same, but it doesn't seem like frequently or recently used are actually or always factors for those icons. I have some categories where the larger icons are mostly apps that I only use occasionally and haven't used in quite a while, while a few of the smaller icons in the same category are apps that I use fairly regularly and just used very recently.

Touche'.

I meant more from an automation perspective, versus manual. I would rather have no icons on my screens, bar the dock icons on the home screen.

Then again, I am speaking as a user that has used Android for a few years, and loved the use of Nova Launcher.

Serious question: if Android and Nova Launcher worked for you, why are you here using and complain about iPhone? Seriously, why not stick with what works (worked?) for you?

I fail to see my comment as a 'complaint' per se'. I was more expressing my opinion, and future desire for the App Library.

Alas, I will refrain from further comment on the matter...

Noted. regarding your desire for future enhancements, please provide feedback to Apple, as no one here has any power to change anything about the App Library.

No need to drop out of the discussion... and I am genuinely curious why you left android and the nova launcher that you loved.

I hope you can read through Apple’s mind and understand what THEY think about App Library. I can’t, so I don't find App Library useful.

Exactly. Apple may have decided that my home screen is "cluttered" and "disorganized." But it's not cluttered and disorganized to me. All we're doing here is replacing my way of internalizing data with Apple's way of internalizing data.

Look, for all of those who love the App Library, fantastic. I'm glad it's there for you. But I've paid nearly a thousand dollars for my iPhone. I shouldn't have to have something on it that I don't want. I should be able to turn it off. Exactly who is serving who here?

What you had/have doesn't get changed or affected -- it's still there and you can still use it like you did before.

Web Clips appear in the Recently Added library folder with no obvious way to remove them (because they are not installed on your device).

Nope.

Call it what you will, it's still bad design and there should be an option to disable it. I'm happy that you're happy with it, but we don't all share the same opinion.
