There's still a lot of things the usual suspects will complain about:

  • Too small screen
  • No USB port on the front
  • No USB-A port
  • Doesn't support Wifi 7 or Bluetooth 6 (don'r even know if it exist)
  • No easy way to replace or add RAM
  • Too expensive upgrade price for SSD
  • Doesn't have the Apple logo in front
  • The colours are all wrong
  • It1s too thin
Did I miss something?

Edited:

Yes, I did:
  • Only 256Gb SSD storage on base model
  • Gigabit Ethernet not available as default on the base model
No Video Input, so you can’t use it as a monitor when Apple introduces a Mac Mini with an M10 chip in five years. Ok, and 24” is a really small screen.

Everyone complaining about the 256GB... I get it, but did you really expect them to bump base RAM and SSD in the same release without a price increase? Let's just take our small RAM win, and hope they come around to 512GB base SSD as soon as next year.

I just bought 2x 2TB and 2x 4TB MVME SSDs for €98 and €212 each (including 19% sales tax) this month and they are even much faster than the internal 1TB in my M3 iMac when you put them in a TB4 enclosure and that Blackmagic Disk Speed Test is reliable.

You can upgrade for $30 to get the Ethernet port. It doesn't use up a USB port because the port is located on the AC adapter.

BTW, rumour has it the new M4 Mac mini only has 3 USB ports.

I agree, but it's part of the nickel and dime theme. Instead of being able to use a $10 USB-C Ethernet adapter, you're really encouraged to spend $30 with Apple because of the lack of Ethernet and USB ports.

Worse part is, the Broadcom Ethernet controller is already on the iMac logic board. You're paying $30 to enable that part with the power adapter.

This is the other part of this nobody talks about anymore

Apple is price gouging on SSD component upgrades that aren't even as fast as less expensive retail options in the marketplace now

People are getting ripped off on pricing and then ripped off on what they actually overpaid for in terms of relative performance in 2024/2025 vs what's out there.

It's just sensationally poor value

Comparing the 2024 colors to the 2023 colors, the biggest changes seem to be to the Yellow and Orange models, which are actually yellow and orange now. The 2023 orange was more of a deep reddish-orange, while yellow seemed more orange, at least on the back of the unit (the pastel part was actually yellow).

2024 blue - lighter shade, less navy blue than before
2024 green - lighter shade, less hunter green than before

? The forums filled with posts about Apple price gouging on SSDs.

Purple looks a lot different to me too. It was much more saturated on the previous models. I was always eyeballing that one, but went with orange because the purple wasn't as rich with the M4, and the orange still had that color.

I wish I could buy one in white and metallic color.
Isn’t that what the Silver color option is?
Silver case and white bezels.

This is a good machine, especially now that is has 16GB RAM.
Just to make sure readers aren't misinterpreting, the iMac has had 16GB available. You're specifically talking about the cheapest configuration.

Can it be used as an external display? I’m still disappointed Apple killed that feature a number of years ago. Would be great for users to buy this now and have the confidence they can use it as a second monitor when it is no longer their primary computer, like it used to be.

Thank you. The £ is a lot stronger now vs the M3 launch date, so otherwise i’m guessing it would have been a £200 increase. I think i read the US price is unchanged, which if true, suggests we are once again being ripped off.
the US price is unchanged at $1299 but that is before sales tax which can be from zero to about 10%. US prices never include taxes.

Does that GB £1199 price include taxes?

It should, because I bet at least 8GB RAM of those 16 are dedicated and allocated for Apple Intelligence.
That’s not how it works. Don’t start a flame thread based on pure supposition.

The RAM is shared RAM. I’ve seen informed estimates that about 3GB is used by AI when it is running. With 16GB of RAM you’ll still have plenty left for other processes. If you toggle off AI, you get it all back.

That's irrelevant here. Yes, the old and new prices include tax.

The US price doesn't change, full stop. The amount of tax paid subsequently hasn't changed. The UK price with and without VAT has changed significantly, despite GBP strengthening significantly. Apple has just chosen to bend us over backwards and give us a good spanking.

Look I see there is now a “beta” option but if you want people to “beta” you should pay them for their time. Even just free services would probably suffice.

I know this is especially true right now since all the Apple Inteligence stuff is coming in and it really needs the most eyes possible on it be4Relesse

Sure, and you can also custom build a gaming PC that gets much higher frame rates than any Mac.

I'm not saying they don't overcharge for upgrades. They do, and they always have; it's just part of their business model. As a lifelong Mac user, it's one definite negative of the platform, but you can't have your cake and eat it too (as they say). I still vividly remember upgrading the RAM on my old Performa 575... but that one cost $2500 and only had a 250MB hard drive and 33MHz chip, so I'd still choose today's ridiculously powerful M4 iMac over any past model and rest easy knowing that some of my overpaid upgrade money is going toward R&D for some even crazier and cheaper machine in the future.

It's mainly going to stock buybacks and fighting an increasing slate of legal challenges, compliance mandates and penalties around the world.

There is very little evidence that Tim is investing more than the bare minimum on R&D

They sure wasted a ton on the car and AVP projects though ... ugh..

If the iMac comes standard with 16GB of ram, this means we can celebrate in the knowledge that all Macs will have this configuration as a minimum standard. Sigh, relieve! Also happy to see the magic keyboard and trackpad are now using USB-C. About time Apple!

I don’t get t\he complaints re screen. 640 fewer pixels on the long side? Not sure most would miss them, especially since the alternative, the Studio Display, is pricey by comparison. But brighter, if HDR matters. Makes sense an all in one would be compact. Nice machine.
