Just figured I'd update all you guys!

I got my offer call on the 15th! So happy to finally have my place at Apple!!!!

But I do have a question,
I have wireless internet at home/in my apartment and I know we have to have a hard wired connection. My router/modem are in a completely different room... so how should I go about getting a hard wired connection in the room that I'm going to be working from? I don't think I could run an ethernet cable through my apartment because of my roommate... but is there another option?

Thanks for all your guys support! Love this community! :D:D :apple:

Your only other option is to move it into the room if you can't run a long Ethernet. If you don't have a cable/phone jack to do so, then you would need to have one installed. Long Ethernet or having the modem in that room are your only options, and they can tell if its hardwired or not if they want to.

So... if I have a phone jack in my room... then what do I do? Because my modem is connected to my cable in my living room... but I do have a phone line available in my room, granted it's not in use...

Then you would need to have a cable jack installed in your room and connect your modem there instead of in the living room. Or a long Ethernet cable.

Your other option is a second router that is capable of acting as a bridge. I was told this would be acceptable as well.

What good would a bridge do unless they wanted a second subnet? They have no choice but to move the router and modem or move the just the router or just run cable but but it's going to entail running an ethernet cable or coax extension no matter what.

All of these questions lately make me nervous for the advisors about to go into training. Lol

They'll be fine, general networking knowledge is not a requisite to work in Tier 1. That being said, knowing TCP/IP basics certainly doesn't hurt. I've been able to field questions about stuff like DNS or file sharing issues that most other iOS Tier 1 reps probably would have escalated.

No need for a second subnet. You can set it as a point to point but as we have this discussion I realize a lot of our gentle readers may not be able to attempt this on their own and it may have been misguided of me to offer this suggestion

P power line s adapter it runs the ethernet connection through the power socket and then you won't have to run a long cable through the apt.

Every bit as unstable as wifi.

Have you used a Power Line before ? I have a few tfhat I use to connect my game consoles Internet Tv that I currently run full 1080p movies from vudu and my computer and never have connection problems and the output is way better than wifi.

My point was that a bridge would be an extraneous piece of equipment since it would have to be hardwired as well and the only benefit to having one would be the ability to have a second subnet. Kind of pointless unless you have more than 253 computers(or have a need for 2 separate networks) . Which brings us back to original problem of how to get the person's iMac connected to the router or modem via ethernet cable.

I can agree with this statement; I have several computers that have had wifi troubles for many... many years and not practical to run a 500 ft ethernet cable in the house. So when I got powerline a year ago, it has been running very smoothly with no disconnects and I can actually get speeds near my providers cap as opposed to half that with wireless.

My guess is that modern day powerline adapters would be fine. They do ask that you have a hardwired ethernet connection for stability but powerline networking has come a long way since it first appeared long ago. I can tell you that you DO NOT want your internet connection to drop during the middle of a call.

As far as bandwidth, the AHA client/server VPN apps are not very demanding. The load typically averages 200 - 300 Kbps downstream and 100 - 150 Kbps upstream during a normal work day. During training however, they use streaming video and audio as well as remote desktop so the bandwidth requirement is considerably higher.

I guess I'm not sure what's more or less practical, spending $100 on a powerline adapter or running 50 feet of ethernet through my house/apartment depending on where I am...

You can find the power line adapter considerably cheaper than that Amazon new egg $45-$70
